Help me in my research, please! Just a few quick questions:

Dec 10, 2008 1:51:40 I'm doing a paper on the western view of Geisha, and how it effects our view of Japanese women and sexuality. I figured to help add some perspective to the various views about Geisha I'd do a survey of sorts, so if you fine folk could help me out that be great!

So here are some random questions, answer any or all:

What sort of image comes to mind when you think of geisha?
Or to put it differently: To you, what is a geisha?

What do you think they do?

What do you think it means to be a geisha?

Do you think of the geisha as a liberated woman or oppressed?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

Well, all the depictions of Geisha I've ever seen are women with painted faces and fans...

What do you think they do?
I was under the impression that they were basically hired to be "arm candy" and not necessarily prostitutes.

What do you think it means to be a geisha?
As I said above, I believe that, to be a geisha didn't require sex or anything, it was sort of like "making your client look better by having you on his arm".

Play music, and dance. I do believe there is more but it is eluding me at the moment.

One must have the determination to go through the rigorous training. I suspect, if they don't have that, then maybe being a geisha isn't meant for them.
Do you think of the geisha as a liberated woman or oppressed?

I can't say if women in the past were forced into this job or not, but most modern geisha willingly choose this lifestyle before going to college, so I would say they are liberated.

@Fenrir: You are correct about finding more responses, but if the OP didn't relate it to DnD and women then the correct place is here, in the Off-Topic forum.
