I'm not getting it.

(Toasted is asking who is going to be purchasing (or otherwise acquiring) a computergame, Civilisation V)

It's almost as bad as TvTropes - I don't have time for it!
I would get it if I did though. I like the new direction.

They actually changed anything this time? What's the new direction?

I will be purchasing Civ V (once I acquire a new recreation platform).

Two of the new changes relate to the tiles: hex-based; one unit per tile. There are other alterations as well.

The wife picked it up yesterday. It looks really different, but appears to play similar. Another difference that I saw was that archers can shoot over tiles. My wife greatly liked that so she didn't have to actually get hurt while attacking cities.

But she only played for an hour or so.

Hell no. Don't get me wrong, I love the Civilization series, but I just can't deveote that kind of time anymore. The days of being able to say "It's 10pm, I'll just play for 1 more hour…holy , it's 3am!" are long behind me. Maybe after I've fully experienced WoW Cataclysm (aka. WoW2), Fallout: New Vegas, and Fable 3 I might take a look, but by that time Civ6 will be out. ;)

But no, I'm not buying it.  I don't play PC games anymore.  But I'll always respect the Civ franchise for its ability to suck my time and will to live away! ;)

Nice... the whole "one more turn..." problem.

The first noticeable thing is replacing the squares with hexes and doing away with stacking units.

That was my dad when he played D&D with some buddies in his dorm when he was in the AF.

Definitely gettin' Fable III, and AC:B, and my dad 'n' I are gonna see what games are coming out for Kinect by Christmastime. Yup.

Prolly not, unless the mod community does it.

I'll eventually be doing a joint purchase with my brother (not the one who insisted it would be a "train wreck" due to a dislike for Civ IV, the sane one).

Dislike of Civ IV? Hey, do me a favor and tell your brother for me that I told him to go to hell, k? "ToastedAmphibian says 'go to hell'".

Heh, that looks pretty nice really. But I'm still addicted to StarCraft II so I really don't have time for it now Tongue out

A worthy successor to IV. Hadn't played any Civ games in a while, so I was reminded how much fun it is to rip into a nation with an inferior military.

My parameters are satisfied with sending a team of Giant Death Robots to trounce nations that threaten my society. Quit building so close to our borders and you might live long enough to the end of the game, fleshlings.

I only managed to play part of one game before getting bored/annoyed and havent gotten around to giving it another shot.

The tech tree is more restrictive, the civlopedia and interface is less informative, resorces are less usefull, conquest is punished, excessive infisis is payed towards helping city states (with rewards that don't justify the effort) and all the civilizations and leaders are too similiar.

I guess mabey I just don't get it.

I haven't played it, although the wife seems to be enjoying it. She has really started liking the Germans since apparently killing a barbarian gives you a chance of them joining your army.

But I did think the instruction manual was really disappointing. All games like Civ should have nice thick manuals like Civ IV.

From my impressions, the Civics section looks interesting, although as I said, I didn't play it yet. The wife seems to think that the resources are too plentiful, the city-states are kind of annoying, and you don't expand your borders fast enough (barbarians spawn between your cities).

I agree with her about the resources, to a point. There are ALOT of resources now, way more than in Civ IV, but before where a resource would add 2 or 3 food, for example, and more when you improve it, most of them now don't do jack. Fish is like +1 food and +1 more with boats, cows are something like +1 commerce if you build a pasture... very unsatisfying. 3 resource patches are not as tempting, in my opinion, as a single civIV tile of fish.

I concur that resources as a productive tile is rather underwhelming, though when your city can occupy 36 hexagons you don't necessarily need those tiles to produce a large quantity.

And if you could actually work all thoes tiles, you would have a point. But the number of tiles you can work is limited and the limiting factor to the number of tiles you can work is determined by the productivity of the tiles you are already working. So... tiles that do not produce a large quantity reduce the average production of the tiles you work while simultaneously reducing the number of tiles you can work. In other words, crap resources are crap. The game is stuffed full of ****ing crap resources.

Did they needlessly upgrade the graphics even more?  That was what really killed Civ IV for me.  The 3d graphics were shiny early on, but when you're mounting invasion forces it's just a needless resource hog.

Huh. I guess you ahve not played civ IV since it came out then. Or you need to upgrade computer badly I guess. If it's any consolation, civ V looks like crap. Strangely.

Point taken, TA. The non-strategic resources are mainly used to satisfy the demand from your citizenry. I do however enjoy that a strategic resource tile has a limit on how many units/structures you can construct.

Yeah, I tried Civ IV for a while when it first came out, but it didn't stick with me.  I still prefer Civ III to Civ IV.

Yup, and you really dont need 5 of them together to do that, considering you need 1 for your entire nation. I agree about the strategic resources though, that actually adds something cool to the game. Most everything else seems to be taking away the cool stuff and not telling you how exactly the new crap works. If they had stuck to hexes, new combat system, and the strategic resource change (and left everything else the same as beyond the sword) it would have been a better game.

Red Escher needs RAM badly.
