| #1huraahJul 27, 2013 14:07:11 | Okay so I was wondering if there are any people from around Liverpool/Chester/Ellesmere Port in England. I'd love to get a game going sometime as I've never played before, I'm learning the basics from youtube. And, what better way to learn than to play. Also if you feel like you want to introduce yourself. I'd be happy just for a conversation with a regular D&D player or even a newb, like myself. Also I'm hoping to get my friends into D&D any useful tips. Also any tips about D&D, greatly appreciated, and if it's worth buying some of the official D&D guides. ![]() And if you're wondering who I am I'm sure it says on my profile but I'm Jacob. A little about myself well I'm a student and I'm a gamer... That's pretty much all I do because I'm not going into the rest of my life for any strangers. Thanks all. |
| #2pigknightJul 27, 2013 14:18:18 | I'm a 3.5e kind of pig and I've gotten into Shadowrun a bit recently. To get friends into D&D you have to ask them to play. No beating around the bush. Be a man, be forty! |
| #3huraahJul 27, 2013 14:55:07 | I've gotten one friend to agree, but the others are on holiday for a while unfortuantely... for a while I'm sure if this one guy agreed they will to though. ![]() As to versions, if I ask the best version you'll say 3.5, but is there any dis/advantages to any particular version? ![]() And I'll look up Shadowrun if a, seems to be, 6 year veteran plays it. :D And you do seem to be a kind of pig, pigknight. :3 |
| #4pigknightJul 27, 2013 15:38:24 | 3.5e/Pathfinder has tons of customization going for it because of all the splat books out there and you can make anything. 4e has better tactical combat as is much more balanced. I recommend 4e for new DMs and 3.5e for more experienced DMs. |
| #5huraahJul 27, 2013 16:19:03 | I'm off for the night and I'm greatly appreciating the replies... But is DMing or Playing the better of the two? :DD |
| #6razdelacroixJul 27, 2013 16:32:33 | Always a tricky question there. From personal experience, I would have to say. . . Give both a shot and see what you like. There really is no right 'which is better' answer to that. As a DM, you will have a wide variety of issues (#1 being your Players) and challenges to overcome. Including creating a compelling story, rolling with the off-rail fun that can come up from the actions of the players, to simply wrangling in a fun fantastic world of adventure for you and your group to partake in. As a Player, you will have a wide variety of issues (#1 being other Players) and challenges to take on. Learning not to hog the spotlight, make your characters either in advance or on time for a game session, bringing food bribes in case your rolls take a turn for the worse (I recommend M&M's for that, or pizza), learning the rules of the game, and when to well-stop being a twit when your DM brings in a houserule to change a rule in the game. Some folks, honestly, should NEVER be DM's. Others, excel at being DM's but should also spend time to be a Player. DM's need fun breaks from running the world too! I do agree with Pig Knight in the assessment of the 3.X vs. 4th editions D&D. 4th is GREAT for new players, and 3.X (.5 - Pathfinder for my tastes) is excellent when you and your players really know what you want and want some insanely fun customization going on. Granted, you CAN do some insanely fun customization in 4th edition, just takes a wee bit more leg-work. Personal thought: If you somehow go insane and DM a game of the Gestalt D&D/d20 Future variety... Pray to whatever deity you care for prior to a session. Also; elven fighter/fast hero, mecha jockey, sniper making sub-orbital shots at a target half-way around the world. Just keep that in mind. |
| #7ADHadhJul 27, 2013 18:50:49 | With 3.5 you've got the full rules available for free in the form of d20srd (only a few "household" things like mind flayers or beholders are not there). For 4e there was this quickstart thing available on WotC website. The difference is that 4e is a bit more gamy and with a narrative approach (i.e. the world is constructed as seen by the player characters, hence lv16 ogres with 1HP: at that level characters simply kill ogres like mosquitoes), while 3.5 has a more simulationist nature and the classes vary more from each other; there's also the question of inner party as well as party-vs-challenges balance, especially with casters. Also, in 4e a lot of things come pre-made for the DM, monsters in particular; for example 3.5 just gives you a basic lvl1 hobgoblin warrior followed by racial traits and fluff, while 4e already has several types of hobgoblin soldiers including casters and archers along with suggested groups to pit against a standard 5-man party. It's also less heavy on the non-combat rules (which produced a lot of comments about "dumbing down"). Most importantly: Read! The! Rules! READ THEM. |
| #8pigknightJul 27, 2013 18:55:37 | 4e is infinitely easier to DM for. |
| #9captain_obliviousJul 27, 2013 21:17:59 | 4e is infinitely easier to DM for. This is true, but I feel DMing for 3.5 was more rewarding. You put more work into it and you have more options for creative choices. Plus, you can actually give the PC's a challenge. I don't go in trying to kill my players but there has to be a chance for it, otherwise it becomes dull. A note about getting other people to play: You have to appeal to the persons personality. D&D offers a lot of different benefits to people. Creative people will probably love the idea of creating a character. I have gotten artists into it just by asking them to draw for my campaigns. Shrewd intelligent friends will like the idea of tactical combat. Hams want to role play and act. The hardest part is dispelling the preconceived ideas that people have about D&D. I suggest you make sure you understand the game very well before you DM. It can be frustrating for new players to have a DM who doesn't know his ****. YOU HAVE SUCH A WONDERFUL JOURNEY AHEAD OF YOU. |
| #10homicidal_squirrelJul 27, 2013 22:46:54 | YOU HAVE SUCH A WONDERFUL JOURNEY AHEAD OF YOU. I used think you were cool, until I found out you were a hippie. ![]() |
| #11Cluless_RatJul 27, 2013 23:19:51 | She doesn't shave? |
| #12homicidal_squirrelJul 27, 2013 23:23:16 | Not according to her new picture. |
| #13Cluless_RatJul 27, 2013 23:41:00 | ell right now my standards are pretty low. Almost went to a strip joint. My stupid friend in Malaysia went to Tahiland and hired top notch escorts. All that talk of booty gave me naughty thoughts. ![]() |
| #14homicidal_squirrelJul 27, 2013 23:42:55 | Why can't you just go on a date with some girl? |
| #15Cluless_RatJul 27, 2013 23:49:33 | Why can't you just go on a date with some girl? I've lost all confidence. Thisis why I am hitting the gym, diet and yoga. I'm using the I'm getting into shape excuse to postpone my re-entry on the celebate market. On the bring side I bought some low rise jeans today! 31 waist! I still need to get into better shape. And order some of these from Australia. So confy. Goes well with low rise jeans and very thin. Helps me endure the 31 waist. |
| #16homicidal_squirrelJul 27, 2013 23:52:05 | "Classic pouch?" That's pretty funny. So what size pants is your fat self wearing now? |
| #17Cluless_RatJul 28, 2013 0:05:22 | "Classic pouch?" That's pretty funny. ... 31. |
| #18huraahJul 28, 2013 3:31:18 | You know what you all seem to know your shizz so I'll trust that. :P I didn't realise that pathfinder was 3.5 though -.-'' I'm guessing the basics are all similar though so I'll probably try 4e if it's easier. And I think I'll have to DM for the first game I play as I doubt my friends would be up for the job of it. :3 Plus I have like 5 weeks to learn for a small campaign so it shouldn't be to hard. *famous last words*. And I'm happy to see that I've joined a thriving community, which I can be part of, nice meeting you all. :D |
| #19The_SilverswordJul 28, 2013 4:29:16 | Pathfinder is more like 3.75e, but its close enough that you could easily port stuff over to Pathfinder or vice versa. But yeah. I personally like 4e, and think its really well suited for new DMs and players, give it a shot, I mean whats the worse than could happen? |
| #20Cluless_RatJul 28, 2013 8:03:29 |
He blows 100$ on a game that sucks more than CHIA on crack. |
| #21homicidal_squirrelJul 28, 2013 9:57:52 | Why can't you just go on a date with some girl? 31? I don't think so fatty. Just look at the picture you set as your avy. 31? Maybe around your first chin. |
| #22captain_obliviousJul 28, 2013 15:51:30 | Not according to her new picture. Its a goatee so I obviously shave parts of my beard. This look takes attention to detail. Also, for those of you who can actually grow facial hair, I strongly suggest this. As a woman, I can safely guarantee it will get you laid*. *not nessisarily by a woman or an entity seperate from yourself. ![]() |
| #23halitosisJul 28, 2013 16:02:58 | Not according to her new picture. ![]() That looks ridiculous. And that guy looks like a hipster. ![]() |
| #24captain_obliviousJul 28, 2013 16:06:04 | That guy looks like he was a hipster before it was cool. THAT guy looks like he knows about bands before they are actually bands THAT GUY IS HIPSTER. |
| #25The_SilverswordJul 28, 2013 16:20:23 | Im willing to bet some serious money that he plays Pathfinder. |
| #26huraahJul 28, 2013 16:29:58 | I rolled a 20 on a dexterity check, thank god, the beard was shaved cleanly. On a semi-serious note a friend, no longer friend because he's an idiot, once asked me to grow a cat tail... Safe to say I swiftly declined. |
| #27The_SilverswordJul 28, 2013 17:18:14 | Depending on what edition youre playing a 20 on a dex check could be very bad. |
| #28homicidal_squirrelJul 28, 2013 17:23:39 | Depending on what edition youre playing a 20 on a dex check could be very bad. Exactly. You have to roll at least a 2,000,00,000,000 if you're playing 4E. ![]() |
| #29The_SilverswordJul 28, 2013 17:59:01 | Depending on what edition youre playing a 20 on a dex check could be very bad. Its obvious youve never played 4e, You need to roll π. But what I was talking about is sometimes when a DM tells you to roll a dex check, you need to roll youre stat or under. |
| #30homicidal_squirrelJul 28, 2013 18:14:35 | Its obvious youve never played 4e, You need to roll π. What is it with D&D players always thinking of fattening food? But what I was talking about is sometimes when a DM tells you to roll a dex check, you need to roll youre stat or under. So in 4E you just have to roll under 2,000,000,000,000? |
| #31Cluless_RatJul 28, 2013 18:26:34 | Why can't you just go on a date with some girl? That pic is old. Like 3 years. It was taken a few months after Marie left me for good. I stopped going to the gym but ate the same amount of food (ok more). Now I'm a 31. I bought another 31 waist pair of jeans today. I'm working to be a 30. I will be a 30. I am a 30. |
| #32trappedsliderJul 28, 2013 18:37:44 | well in GURPS you need to roll a 1.... |
| #33homicidal_squirrelJul 28, 2013 18:39:26 | That pic is old. Like 3 years. It was taken a few months after Marie left me for good. I stopped going to the gym but ate the same amount of food (ok more). Pic or it didn't happen. |
| #34Cluless_RatJul 28, 2013 18:43:53 | That pic is old. Like 3 years. It was taken a few months after Marie left me for good. I stopped going to the gym but ate the same amount of food (ok more). In the group. |
