Hikaru No GO: Dubbed vs subbed

Mar 06, 2010 14:27:02 hey guys, i'm currently watching the subbed version of Hikaru No GO. I don't mind reading subtitles but I don't like to keep my eyes on the screen the whole time to be able to follow the story and so if i can get a dubbed version to listen to while my eyes wander elsewhere i'm game.
I know of a dubbed version of the show but i thnk it was made by 4kids. That alone makes me not want to check it out.
so if any of you out there have seen the both the subbed and the 4kids dub, do you think enough of the show is still there to please an adult? also do you know of any other dubbing that got done by any other such as maybe funimation that might be better?

Me? Well, I'm a fast enough reader to be able to read subtitles for both Finnish and Swedish at the same time.

Mar 06, 2010 19:45:13 ah the old subbed VS dubbed. i'm not that fussy and i really can't complain: i read a lot of scanlated manga ranging to good quality to "a guy with bablefish".

as long as it's good quality, i could care less if it's subbed or dubbed... as long as it's of good quality. or samurai pizza cats "no script?! umm... make something up!".

Mar 07, 2010 23:36:54 I watched almost all of the dubbed version of Hikaru no Go when it was airing on Toonami Jetstream. First off, it was dubbed by Viz Media, not 4Kids. I thought that it was a very good dub. Good show too. I think it might be on iTunes now. Or was it hulu?

Mar 08, 2010 21:51:25 Back when I watched anime, I preferred subtitles. Some of the voice actors the U.S. distribution companies used back in the 90s were sub-par. And each company seem to keep a stable of about a half dozen to a dozen, simply recycling them for each new project. I was unhappy about subtitled costing more, but I felt it was worth it to avoid the English voice can't-actors. As a side effect, I picked up a couple words and a feel for how the flowed language. I often heard interesting ways in which the translation was different from actual words (certain suffixes being used, a name being dropped, etc.).

This was a time ago, of course; somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-7 years. One of the nice things about DVDs is the multiple language and subtitle tracts. You really don't have to choose one or the other like back in the days of VHS.
