So my group and I have been on the topic of bad names. One of the funniest ones I know, comes from an old friend of my who named his character," Anasties Dunwich, A naste a** dumb b**** ?
Or other puckingly horrible names, Uthegental and Sus'umptu from Seige of Darkness. Uthegental might as well be Uthegenital and Sus'umptu sounds like a bowel movement.
I'm kind of scared of what other ones are out there .

I played a character named Shi'thead, as an inside joke. As soon as someone saw how it was spelled and started saying ****-head again & again & again then it stopped being funny and I changed it.

Back in 2nd Ed., I had a joke character I made up just to see how goofy I could get a character and still be viable.

So I made a gnome named Theric Cleif the cleric/thief... :D

I don't know if that's horrible or not, but it's definitely goofy....

(Despite being a joke character with classes that were basically kryptonite to each other back then, he actually did pretty well and was one of my main characters for a few years. Then 3rd came around and I found out that Theric had been about fifteen years ahead of his time - 3.5 turned him into a three-legged ass-kicking machine, lol)

Ah, here's one for ya...

My crazy NPC merchant "Ali Al'Rasgul" (A little rascal?) and his "Bazaar of the Bizarre", a Bedouin-style tent that showed up in almost every city the party ever visited.

A bad charicature of every stereotype about slick used car dealers and sleazy desert traders, and a complete bug-eyed lunatic as well. :D

I once heard reference to a monstrous bull headed character named Ruatonim Gib. Spell it backwards and you get Big Minotaur. I

I've since usurped and used that name quite a bit.

On Neverwinter Nights I used the games random name generator to name my Human Monk and came up with Macho Roger. Pretty much all of my Monks from than on have that name.

Not original, but I've always had the urge to play a gnome named John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Hmm. Not so much horrible names, as just bad ideas....

I had a gnome that became superpowerful in the end. Why? He wasn't named Zareskial, or Kelsatior or some other strange name that makes pcs unique. He was named Bob.

2: Long time ago, we had a horrible person play with us. Thankfully we decided enough of him and booted the player. His first character was . When we asked what? He told us its in elven, and therfor not prouncable by the human tongue. So we just looked at the spelling, which vaguly looked like Sinhiena, and nicknamed him Sin. Strangely enough his deeds made that name fit him to t. He is now a revolving baddy that keeps getting killed and brought back. Its a joke that doesnt die.

3: Another nickname. Cool wizard/fighter/rogue type. My best friends first character. Made back in second edition I guess. Made the mistake as all teens are alt to do, and got drunk. Apperently real bad. Because he woke up in a barn. Next to a pig. That looked happy. From then on, he was no longer his name. He was titled Pig ****er.

4: I made a rush job on a wizard/fighter, and in trying to come up wiht a name, decided on Alundra (From the PS game). No amount of talking would convince the others that it was a male name. It was too feminine sounding ot them.

I think I first heard this from Tempest, but my favorite name for a dwarf would have to be Maxwell Silverhammer. Surprising how long it takes some people to get the reference.

a buddy of mine played a drow named Dune....

we were in a underground cavern and he found some glowing green fungus....and decided to EAT IT!!!

it gave him horrible gas, and made him hallucinate....

and from that day forth we called him:

Gaseous Dune the Fungus Eater

or Gaseous Dune for short. his hallucinations actually gave us plot hooks.

Well, it might not be horrible like the initial post, but here we go...
Our group went through some size fluxes, and ended up with only...3-4 of us regularly playing. One guy doubled up with characters, playing a cleric as well as his ranger. (Note: we had a computer program one of the other guys had written for a map; we had icons with names up on it.)
Despite his insistence, the cleric was called, on screen, "HB1K", for "Heal-Bot 1000".
Eventually, he decided the cleric's name was "H'Bonek".

Once I was running a game, and the group was traveling with a caravan run by an extremely arrogant and surly dwarf with delusions of grandeur and his mentally challenged half-ogre sidekick. I made them up on the fly, as flavor, along with their names...Slagg (the half-ogre) and "The Baron" (the dwarf).

My players laughed their collective arses off for nearly 10 minutes, stopping only to catch their breath and to ask "WTF???". So I played their humor up, having the dwarf continually insist that he was "The Baron" of "here" or "The Baron" of "there". They'd ride by some ruins or whatever, and he'd exclaim that he was "The Baron" of that place., until he was driven out by "so-and-so"...all the while smacking the mentally challenged Slagg up-side the back of the head, insisting that Slagg grunt in confirmation of The Baron's claims.

I have to say, it was a pretty good RP session there, and so memorable that my players STILL CHUCKLE even to this day whenever I mention "Slagg and The Baron". :D

Some folks just don't like the Beatles...

We were just starting out a game once when we were much younger. One of the guys was going to play a monk, (oriental adventures era), and was left thinking about what to call him. After great deliberation he finally turned with a smile on his face and said "I'm Bruce Lee!"

The rest of us sort of chuckled a bit, but then the player jumped to his feet and attempted to approximate his best version of a snap kick and a horrid "Wataaah!". Dread began to fill our hearts.

As the game started he began to do everything in his power to try and mimic Bruce Lee and all his mannerisms to such a point that he would insist that he was a certified ass whooping machine at level 1. I could see our DM beginning to become unamused.

Eventually the party made it's way to an inn to look for work. (We were 15, sue us for unoriginality). As we sat there attempting to guess what adults really did at bars the front door to the inn blew off it's hinges! Our characters and all the other patrons lept to their feet and turned to the doorway. There stood a giant of a barbarian, 7 feet of rippling muscles and fiery gazed fury. He slowly strode into the bar and asked the first customer "What's your name?" in that slightly Austrian accent we all know barbarians must use.

"Bob sir" replied the NPC

"Yah, that's ok."

This went on throughout the room, passing Dave, Bill, Jim, and Frank the NPC farmers.

Eventually this walking wall of hate reached our group.

"Alan" I said.
"Bhoras" said our Dwarven cleric.
"Malaghast" stammered our Mage.
"BRUCE LEE! WHATTAH!" said our monk, snapping out a punch into the barbarians abs.
"That's a stupid name." the barbarian calmly stated as he cleaved the monk into two equal pieces.

From that day on every player in our group knew to fear the awesome power of The Stupid-Name Killer.

The Bruce Lee one's an instant classic; I may have to borrow the "Stupid Name Killer" for some of my new players. Another fun monk name is Lu Tze (say it aloud if you don't get it).

Bad enough he ripped the name for the character, but he had to misspell it too?

I once got impatient with one player not coming up with a name for his Halfling rogue, so I wrote in Damndirty Smartypants. He loved it.

PS. There's a guy called Ziemowit Jaksa in my areas. Both are ancient Slavic names that no one uses anymore and the only reasonable short for Ziemowit would be "Ziomek", which means "Homie".

Way back, in the long-long ago, I DM'd a game for my friends. I didn't plan much back then and was continually stumped by the PCs asking for NPC names that I had not felt worthy of such an honor. My solution to this problem? I'd name every NPC they asked (and they asked every. single. one's. name after this started) after some President. So, the barkeep may be Teddy Roosevelt, the smithy Calvin Coolidge and the stable boy Herbert Hoover. I can't honestly remember what I did when they asked a woman's name. I think I just went with generic Jenny and Kellys and such. Them's was some pretty bad names.

Oh, I feel that if you choose to name your child something that will pretty much cause them to be made fun of just so you can seem "cool" and "different" that you should be shot in the face. And then those poor, poor children you have maligned so should be placed forceably into a wood chipper lest they feel the need to harm their future children in the same way due to whatever defective gene their parents had that was probably passed on to them. Savages.

I studied Russian in college, and did a lot of work with the local Russian, Czech, etc community. I got called "Ziomek" a lot. So much, in fact, that some of the old ladies were introducing me around to family members I hadn't met yet assuming that was my real name and it was just a coincidence.

Way back, in the long-long ago, I DM'd a game for my friends. I didn't plan much back then and was continually stumped by the PCs asking for NPC names that I had not felt worthy of such an honor. I'm the same way, though I had a different way around it.

Bat's DMing tip #362: Need a quick NPC name? Look at whatever book you've got open in front of you at the time, take the last 4 letters of the first word your eyes focus on and combine them with the first 3 of the next. Voila, instant fantasy-sounding NPC name.

Saved my butt more times than I can remember.

Oh, I feel that if you choose to name your child something that will pretty much cause them to be made fun of just so you can seem "cool" and "different" that you should be shot in the face. Savages.

I'm personally more opposed to family names than I am to naming a child after a random color or fruit. At least the color name would be theirs, not something recycled. Naming them after someone they know puts them behind the eightball, forcing them to live up to the name. I'd rather they got to redefine "Blueberry" than having to live up to Uncle Victor's legacy (good or bad).

Ironically, I've been informed that at least two of my female friends are planning on naming children after me. You can imagine the awkward position this puts me in, karmically.

In high school our homeroom teacher for grade 11 was a great guy called Mr. Barrie. (Pronounced "Berry"). Mr. Barrie was your prototypical Catholic School teaching, granola eating, Jesus looking hippie. This guy was so new age he wore sandals in winter in a town where the temperature hits -50 BEFORE windchill.

His wife was 7 months pregnant when school started and they thought it would fun to allow his class to hold an election to choose the babies name. So everyone puts their heads together and eventually we present him with the classes choice. That was 16 years ago now...

I wonder how little Straw Barrie made out in his life?
