| #1dirtyfrankFeb 23, 2010 23:53:00 | Pole dancing as an Olympic event. www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2010/02/23... |
| #2Dougan_AxehammerFeb 24, 2010 0:20:56 | Pole-dancing is dancing with some athletic ability. Last I checked, ball-room dancing was not an Olympic event, why should pole-dancing. |
| #3pluisjenFeb 24, 2010 8:17:18 | I don't care for the olympics either way ![]() |
| #4zombie_babiesFeb 24, 2010 8:41:18 | Hot? No. Not hot? No. Stupid? Hells to the yes. |
| #5KlirshonFeb 24, 2010 9:01:18 | Perhaps they (the clubs) just want a reason to advertise their business to the world... probably with their logo placed upon a stripper's/pole dancer's/Olympic athlete's bottom. Still asinine... |
| #6zombie_babiesFeb 24, 2010 9:18:12 | I've got no problem whatsoever with nudy bars and their brass poles. But this ain't a sport - let alone an Olympic one. |
| #7dirtyfrankFeb 24, 2010 9:38:10 | I think this is just another example of people wanting something they enjoy to be seen as a sport even if such a thing just seems silly. As far as my opinion goes just because you enjoy something or because it might have the ability to be competitive it doesn't make it a sport. Or even worthy of the Olympics. PvP is a direct competitive fight between PCs and so we see PvP as a sport or worthy for the Olympics. I don't think so, but hey i'm sure there are some yahoos out there that would. That would be kind of interesting to see D&D PvP in the Olympics. ![]() |
| #8Cpt_MichaFeb 24, 2010 9:42:59 | I think it's more of a sport than Golf, or Baseball. The level of fitness required is there, (to be any good at it) the ability for direct competition is there (unlike Golf). I think it'd be an interesting thing as a side note as an Exhibition Game in the Olympics. Well gaming at this point is Professional and has several well paying leagues (think 500k cash prizes for the winner. To say nothing of the insane sponsership deals). I do think player vs player gaming is more of a sport than Golf. Under how I define sports a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. |
| #9toastedamphibianFeb 24, 2010 17:05:22 | .... are you advocating full contact competitive pole dancing? |
| #10EscherEnigmaFeb 24, 2010 17:10:25 | I'm just trying to imagine what criteria the judges would use to determine the winner. |
| #11EscherEnigmaFeb 24, 2010 17:11:46 | Golf you aren't really directly competing with anyone but yourself so I don't call it a sport. So I would add a 4 to that definition. An activity that you can do with Direct Competition. Direct Competition means your opponent has a direct means of combating your strategy or can directly affect your own performance. ... Why the hatred of Track & Field? |
| #12toastedamphibianFeb 24, 2010 17:13:47 | @Esher %wood? Interestingly enough, none of the original Olympic events (all foot races) most of the ones added later (Javlin toss, discus toss, chariot races, long jump) or even most modern events (Swiming, sking, sledding, gymnastics) qualify as Micha sports. As such, wether or not poledancing is a Micha sport should not matter to anyone, even Micha, when determining wether or not it should be an olympic event. |
| #13EscherEnigmaFeb 24, 2010 17:18:28 | @Esher %wood? Heh. Then you'd have the only event in which the judges have to be tested for drugs. That said, that poses a logistical issue, as the first woman to peform would have a serious advantage over the last one, not to mention that the individual kinks and "what gets them" for the judges would have a big impact on the scores. Nah, I think it'd have to be like ice skating and gymnastics, where they have set requirements that must be met, such that the whole "aesthetically pleasing" part isn't dominating as that's very subjective. |
| #14Cpt_MichaFeb 24, 2010 17:29:22 |
Cause it's people runnin in set lines :-p now if they were allowed to take each other's lines around a track etc. -then- I would call it a sport. @Esher %wood? Aww it didn't take your first post to me... Full Contact competitive pole dancing :hmmm: We could work with this. I think that it certainly could qualify. I'm going to go with the benefit of a doubt and assume that Jello is not going to be involved at any point though. The good news is for alot of sports that I don't count as sports only need slight tweaking to become them :-p |
| #15pigknightFeb 24, 2010 17:32:17 | First to make a judge explode (wink, wink) wins. :P |
| #16Cpt_MichaFeb 24, 2010 17:36:08 | For something to be a sport though I'm willing to take the three definitions the site I linked gives. Especially if something like Golf is a sport then really no one can be that picky about what is and is not a sport you know? Piggy I think you've learned everything you know from dirtyfrank! |
| #17melloredFeb 24, 2010 17:43:44 | I don't see this as much different from figure skating, or syncronised swimming, or any other gymnastic stuff. Heck, they've allready got horizontal pole dancing (parrallel or uneven bars), i don't see much reason to not consider vertical poles..... are you advocating full contact competitive pole dancing? I will. First one to fall looses. |
| #18dirtyfrankFeb 24, 2010 19:41:17 | Nah, I think it'd have to be like ice skating and gymnastics, where they have set requirements that must be met, such that the whole "aesthetically pleasing" part isn't dominating as that's very subjective. Yeah i think it would be sorta scored like figure skating or something. It would probably be done with all the gymnastics stuff though. And with most gymnastics stuff it would mean that most countries would have teenagers competing. At which point the awkward or uncomfortable level would go up cuz well the world would be watching minors sensually working a pole. |
| #19bone_nagaFeb 24, 2010 20:24:45 | .... are you advocating full contact competitive pole dancing? I'm down with the full contact part, but I think it should be a team event ![]() |
