How is business in the Tavern?

IE, How well populated is it since the recent changes in the CoC? My cursory and completely unscientific survey leads me to believe that business is slow, but the Tavern was always slow, compared to most of the other forums.

But now, whenever I check the tavern, it's always the same few threads at the top. Now, I love the "Ban the person above you" thread, and "(controversial statement)", but those threads are statements about the new regime, and are enjoyable because of their very...I dunno, "meta-ness." We know what we aren't supposed to talk about, so we talk about not talking about them.

Even though some threads became very heated, at least there was some passion outside of the pro/con 4ed argument. Hell, there was a point during the political season (when things admittedly went a little wacky) that I had a DREAM about making a post. Now, I never really bother.

So, can anyone figure out how much traffic in the Tavern has tapered off, if at all? And if so, please share. I'll be in the corner, nursing my beer.

I'd just also like to mention that traffic on the boards in general tends to slow over the Christmas (and other holidays) Season. People tend to be absent for long periods of time, chained to things like "family" and "tradition" and "responsibility". Sometimes, fun things like "vacations" or "trips" happen too. I think any slowdown on the boards is more a sign of the calendar than any particular policy change/inforcement.

I agree, but the other boards are running full-steam. Plus, my crappy little survey has been going on since the changes, and the drop-off was noticeable, IMO.

Another culprit may be that girly forum. This place is beginning to smell like a locker room!

Hm. I hadn't noticed any "drop-off", except perhaps in the threads trying to provoke a reaction. Basically, I saw there was a "flare-up" after the announcement, then things went back to pretty much normal.

Then again, I wasn't looking for a drop-off, so IDK. It seems that there are the same amount of silly threads going on here as there were before (excepting a normal holiday slowdown - I've seen it in other places on these boards as well), and I certainly wouldn't put the "changes" as the reasons for any lack of discussion. I don't think there's been that big of a "drop-off". Cooling down, maybe, from the anti-policy people protesting, but not a drop-off of general post/conversations.

And regarding the "girly forum": I've seen more people posting in both Astrid's and the Tavern recently than I have in a while. You're more than welcome to come over and hang out. That is, of course, if it's not to "girly" for you. :P

Right, so you're part of the problem. Noted.

I used to average 5-10 posts a day. Since the off-topic tavern has become nothing more than candyfloss, bubblegum and poptarts (not the psuedo-food), I think I'm posting less than once a week.

Until the management comes to the realization that some of us care more about the outside world than what movies are coming out, I'll probably only look in this pointless forum once or twice a week.

I will, however, dredge up at least one thread that the exalted censor missed in his grand purge of all things political and religious periodically.

Gobbo, you've been doing good work. Don't think The People don't notice.

Why did that appropriate discussions thread get locked, BTW?

I have no clue, but did you notice the date that thread was started?

Ya know, I read a lot of posts from a lot of people I disagreed with, but I never felt it was WotC that was the culprit. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see how many different varieties of people play DnD, and how many different opinions there are in this thing of ours.

I still can't quite understand how something can meet the decency standards but not past appropriate topic muster. If there goal is to make sure that the site gets traffic, then they aren't helping the tavern.

I look at it from a community-building standpoint. Our ability to be able to discuss anything without fear of reprisal or discrimination allows us to grow as a community and benefit from the diversity within our community. If I have a question about something that I just can't seem to wrap my brain around, I can ask one of the people that I know holds a particular point of view. By banning the discussion outright, it closes down our ability to understand each other.

The ban wasn't because of decency. The ban was because the moderators didn't want to have to moderate. The excuse was that it was too much for the ORCs to be able to handle. To a degree they were right. Some of the posters made the choice to use it as a platform to present horribly graphic images that did violate the CoC. But when added to the prejudice against the the topics by the VCL for this forum, the ban was a forgone conclusion.

It seems to me that a ban on the inappropriate poster would have been the proper response, but your theory that they are trying to lessen the work load is plausible.

I can only assume the clown who posted the bad pics was banned. Any idea?

I suppose the topic cops might also add in a "keep it clean for the kiddies" -type reason, given that DDi put the forums in the spotlight, so to speak.

It all still seems like real weak tea: Punishing those who abide by the original rules because of the actions of a few when targeted punishment was possible and appropriate.

Where's the carrot and where's the stick?

I don't know. The stick is a bit over the top. I expect this post will get removed like the one that pointed out the banned topics that were allowed to be posted after the ban was reinstated.
