Not long because then you lose your motive to shoot the person you like.

Well, I don't think I'd like someone anymore if they suddenly, out of the blue told me that I need to get some sort of shot.  That's, like, information that you should totally give up front, ya know.

Yes, yes, all interesting and stuff. Now tell us, did you shoot him/her yet? Where did you hide the body?

What did he/she have and give you that required a shot?  Why are you waiting to get it?  More importantly, how did you get it?  We, uhh, really need to know the answer to that last one.  For, umm, safety reasons.

You went to a doctor, didn't you? That was a terrible mistake on your part. You would haev ben fine if you had just not gone in. Doctors are notorious for giving people things like AIDs, cancer, STDs, extra-chromosomes, etc.  It's your own fault.

[Disclaimer]I am 32 and married (8 years this October). My feelings on romance are likely different than from someone in the throes of young love, or those without significant others.[/Disclaimer]
For me, I wouldn't wait. If I wanted to be with someone, I'd tell them how I felt and see what happened. That's actually taking a "shot" at having a relationship.

For someone with whom I've made a commitment, I'd wait forever. <3 But that's not really a "shot", that's a commitment.

So ... I would tell the person how I felt about him, and see if he wanted to date or whatever. If he was in another relationship, I'd probably have to see the specifics - but at most, I'd tell him. At least, I'd just look for happiness elsewhere (cause he already found his).

As vague as the OP is, I can't really give any more of an answer than that.

BUT, at least it's not a joke about shooting/getting shot/getting a vaccine/etc!

I know.  I wanna know exactly what happened during that visit.  That way if I'm ever forced to go to the doctor I'll know the warning signs of AIDS.  Then, if the doc gives off any, I'll know I need to bail before he can give me AIDS.

Thanks for the reply.

My question was more along the lines of, what if you wanted to date someone but something (distance, family, etc.) kept you from going for it? How long would you wait for the issues to resolve before looking towards someone else?

No problem!

Well, it would have to depend on what the factor keeping us apart was. I don't really care what my (or his) family thinks, so that wouldn't stop me. If he lived far away, I'd probably try a long-distance thing - but we'd be dating, not waiting for something to change so we could "try".

I guess I wouldn't wait. I'd try to make a go of it, in the circumstances existing, and see where it got me. If we couldn't make it work because he lived too far away, then I'd probably move on. But it wouldn't stop me from actually going for it (ie: telling him how I felt and starting a relationship with him).

If he was so concerned about his family, then I'd probably not want to be with him, anyway.

If it's an age thing (meaning: his family refuses to let us be together) ... well, I hate to sound like the old woman here, but I'd move on. Young love is sweet, but it's also young. I've had my heart broken, and I've broken hearts. I even found the love of my life relatively young. But it wasn't easy, and I thought I loved others before I met him. And, we were still both independent (from family) at the time we met, so ...

Yeah.

Not a big fan of waiting for circumstances to change in order to try to make something work. Work within the circumstances you have - it'll be a good test for the future!

PS - I also hate overly-vague questions.

That is something to consider.

For me, though, I wouldn't want to date someone "until" - I'd rather wholly be with the person I'm with (or open relationship, or whatever), than have them in a holding pattern till I can be with the one I really want to be with. That's not really fair to the other person, especially if he is thinking our dating will lead to somewhere "serious".

But as long as everyone is open about that, or ok with it being a more open-ended or "right now" thing, that's cool.

Main point, though: Don't pine. It's totally not worth it. Give it a shot how you can, or go do something (someone!) else. Don't waste away for the day you can be together. That's just defeatism.

Everyone is assuming that this isn't hypothetical. Sometimes I just like to see the values of humanity without a direct relation to a situation I'm in.

However, relevant to myself, I always found it funny how people can just move on and look for someone else. I find that people I might like enough to consider dating are very few and far between.

Even assuming it's hypothetical, it's still overly-vague. I can't say what I'd do in a given situation because all situations are different. I get annoyed when I give an answer to the vague question asked, only to have it responded to with "well, this is what I really was asking".

As for "few and far between" ... well ... that's you. Some people don't see dating as anything more than having a good time together, some people see it as a step toward serious commitment, some see it as a serious commitment.

Pining is still dumb though.

Might I re-iterate that this scenario is hypothetical... it's a survey, not a question seeking advice.

And I apologize for being vague, but I wanted the question to cover a wider range of scenarios and so a certain vagueness was required.

Not that I would know anything about that from experience or anything, of course.

Anyhoo, it's a classic 'put yourself in their shoes' sitch.  Like, if a person you were into was all like 'I want a blue car for my birthday' and you went out and bought them one and then they were all like 'ok, whatever, I really wanted a brown dog' and then sorta sulked about it, wouldn't you, you know, be tempted to punch a hole through their skull?

The orginal question was just too vague for me, I mean what are you waiting for? Are they with someone else? Do they see you as "just a friend"? Are they in a coma? I mean it would depend alot on the circumstances as to how long I would wait.

The new season of Walking Dead to start.
 Are they with someone else?

Wouldn't matter. You show off your manliness by taking the girlie away from a lesser man.
Do they see you as "just a friend"?

Surprise secs fixes that right wuick.
Are they in a coma?
