How much do you care?

How easily offended are you by what other people say/do?

The topic was touched in another thread, and I considered posting this there, but it's wildly off-topic, like much of the rest of that discussion.

So, if someone (for instance, someone on this forum) said something that you dislike, and which you perceived as a personal insult, would you really be offended?

Here's how I see it: If someone says something I don't like, I probably take about half a second to stop caring, because I don't know that person; what do I care what they think? In fact, everything I do know about them is probably based largely on what they said, so I begin to formulate an opinion of that person, based on statements I don't like, so I care even less about what they think.

In recent memory (the past 10 years or so), I have only been offended twice; once by my father, and once by five people I once thought of as friends. My closeness to them is what granted them the power to truly offend me. Worse things have been done/said to me by others, but I can't really bring myself to care, so I'm not offended.

What about you? Are you offended when random people insult you?

1) You're a poopy face. :P

2) I only really get offended by close friends 'n family when they do something that would obviously offend me.

I only get riled up when on eof two things happen: Someone makes assumptions about me (mild pet peeve, I can usually ignore it, but sometimes someone just hits the wrong chord and comes of as being too presumptious) and when someone outright insults me. Something like calling me a poopy head [seriously, not like pigknight, who happens to be a real poopy head, just did (seriously, I've seen the pictures)] will get reported. It isn't worth encouraging behavior like that. If it's in real life, I just ignore the person. No reason to get worked up over it either way, that's just playing into their hands

Generally, when someone actually insults me, that's it. I officially cease caring about their welfare and will never lift a finger to assist them regardless of the circumstances. This, of course, has been amusing when people I have worked with have insulted me and then later request my help. Can't meet your deadline? Not my problem. Hurt yourself? Not my problem, too bad, so sad, buh-bye.

On here? Ignore list, best I can muster.

I don't care enough to get insulted. I will still help you if you ask me to and I am able to give aid. I am not small, petty or selfish enough to let such minor things get in the way of myself or other people.

Just out of curiosity, what was the other thread/who was involved? You can PM me with the response, to do otherwise would be impolite.

I would never stoop to insulting someone either in a forum or out and about. I do have a good sense of humor that snaps out once in a while, and I fear that people sometimes feel that I am making fun of them, but I would never!

As I do make the good natured joke once in a while, I simply assume that others are doing the same and I take it in stride. It's much easier to be happy.

I don't really dig how people can get so uptight over something that doesn't have any impact on whether they live to see tomorrow or not. I mean, if it's not life threatening, watch it go by right?

This one, but the content that made me think of this was deleted by the moderators, and rightly so.

Depends if what they say is offensive or not.

What about you? Are you offended when random people insult you?

If someone is trying to be provocative and offensive, then no. I think their behavior is silly and they should try to find some other way to cry out for attention.

If it is someone I really care about and it is a serious insult then yes, it bothers me. Friends wouldn't be friends if what they said didn't matter to me, then they would just be 'random people I know'.

In general it is important, I think, to note that there are varying degrees of offensive; and just because something is offensive, doesn't necessarily mean that I am offended. If I am offended there are varying degrees of response. I might feel uncomfortable and not say anything, ranging to a mild comment, all the way up to leaving the room.

I don't think I am particularly thinned skinned, but I also think people are much more likely to be provocative in chat rooms or on the internet where anonymity is their friend. I think most pigheaded-ness here would dissolve in real life encounters.

Not for me. Me on the internet is the mild me. Me in person is either ignore everyone or be a dick because you bothered me.

I only really feel personally insulted of I am called a liar. It bothers me because I don't do it. I believe in be a prick if it means I am honest rather than being a nice liar, so I hate it when people start accusing me of lying. Part of the reason why it bothers me is that they have nothing, or next to nothing, to back their claim up and they never seem to shut up about it (they often continue long after they have made a fool of themselves).

That strikes me as being sad.

I start by respecting people for being human, and for their dignity. Then they either gain it or lose it from there based on their actions.

But IMHO everyone deserves a basic level of respect...

How is that sad? I'm not going to respect someone just because they exist. That doesn't mean I wish them harm or that I have ill feelings towards them, I just don't care. And if you don't care, how do you respect?

Like I said, it strikes me as sad, it strikes me as an adversarial view of the world. I can't really explain it anymore than that. It just seems sad to me.

I give people respect just because they exist, until they do something to lose it. Like me, they are here to on this planet trying to live their lives, that gives us all something in common and in my opinion that deserves some basic respect.

But that is just me. I am not saying it is right or wrong, but it is the way I view it, and it is simply my opinion.

Yeah, I get offended when people insult me. I don't know, it gets annoying when someone just claims that they know everything about me, or the stuff that I value .

You have to have thick skin when posting/reading message boards; people tend to have a big pair when posting on message boards and can get nasty pretty quick. It's no coincidence that lack of consequences seems to bring out the worst in people.

I refer you to John Gabriels Internet ****wad theory - http://www.pennyarcademerch.com/pat070381.html

I used to get in stupid forum flame wars all the time; only thing I accomplished was feeling angry every time I was on the internet! LOL

My solution was to take my time when posting, and try to only write things I'm sure I would say to a persons face. It's made my web boards life a lot easier.

And the reasoning for this is that people tend to have a bigger pair in their imagination than in real life. Thus when they are on the boards they use their imaginary pair.

My solution was to take my time when posting, and try to only write things I'm sure I would say to a persons face. It's made my web boards life a lot easier.

It is a little more tough for me to do this because it would be just about everything. Plus I probably would have been banned several times and most everything I typed would be censored and reported. I've got to tone myself down when on the boards.

I don't even care that much.

People are free to say whatever the 9hells they want to me on-line.
Maybe I'll see what they post. Most likely I won't. Now if they directly PM me....
Anyways, I just give them the benifit of the doubt & assume they're better in the real world than the digital one.

In the real world it's also pretty hard to actually insult me.
Even then, though I won't generally altuisticly go out of my way for you any longer, I still won't leave you injured or hungry, or in some form of real peril.

Personally, I have three brothers, all dicks in their own subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) ways, so actually offending me is fairly hard to do. However, glaring stupidity just makes me angry, as stupidity is something very few people are actually born with. Most people just choose to embrace their own ignorance and stay inside their own personal box. Anything outside that box is different, and therefore obviously wrong. I destroy these people IRL and laugh at them, and then once they've had time to either feel sorry for themselves or get angry, I apologize, and then ask them if they'll expand their box a bit. It usually works. The problem is, people on the Internet usually ignore my sage advice wrapped in bitterness and temperament. Their boxes are concrete, and very few of them are altered by anything coming from a Forum. I know I've had my box expanded on these Boards. I've been proven wrong or shown what I was missing plenty of times, and I appreciate it when it happens. After all, "The horizon never ends, except when you stop moving forward."
