How often do you read your D&D books?

Apr 24, 2009 12:52:49 After looking through these forums - to me it looks like a lot of people really know there $h!t! I haven't played in long time and just getting back into it really.

So I was just wondering how often or how many times have you read your PHB or DM Guide? Do you study it or learn the game as you play it?

Apr 24, 2009 12:55:03 A little of both. First day I get a manual I put aside from time later in the night and read for several hours, just enough to know the whats what and all. After that I play the game and use the manual as a reference point, but I'll still read it (them) if I feel like it.

Apr 24, 2009 13:22:48 I love pouring through the books that I have in my spare time. There is a lot of material for every single class that provides so many interesting character options. I spend most of the time on the player books and accessories. I don't spend as much on the DMG or MM. I usually just use them for reference when I need to.

Apr 24, 2009 13:24:42 I read the books when I first get them, then just as I need to when I run the game.

Since I'm not running D&D at the moment, there are large portions of the books that I have not read.

But I'm still more well-versed than my players. I just have a knack for these things.

i'm serious. i need something to do at work when it's slow or during my breaks, so i writeup new characters, remake old ones, try out an character, whatever...

so generally i read something D&D related virtually every day. or GURPS, my other RPG love. or nWoD if i can borrow someone's books.

seeing as how i do hardware/software tech support, i don't get weird looks since there a lot of former/currently playing/curious players here.

Apr 24, 2009 14:14:42 I (normally) read them front to back as soon as I get it, then read the parts that interested me the most (sometimes the whole thing again).

After that, I look through them from time to time, mostly to get a PG reference for quoting something.

Apr 24, 2009 14:15:16 I read each book I have cover to cover when I get it, and then as needed for games and making characters (to be fair, I make alot of characters so I get plenty of chances to read up on stuff).

Apr 24, 2009 15:31:39 As soon as I get them, I read through the parts that most interest me - generally PrCs and Magic Items (especially artifacts), as well as any new rules immediately. I then read the rest of the book that night. I re-read stuff now marked as "interesting" (with revisions from the complete reading) again the next day. And then at least once more the day after. I then read the rest of the book once more.

From then, it depends on how interesting/useful the book is. Heroes of Horror and Book of Vile Darkness I read more times than I care to count, Book of Exalted Deeds and Complete Mage barely more than the minimum outlined above.
