How to kill a cliche...

So I was running a game tonight, after a long hiatus, finally getting to try out PH2 and Arcane power. Wonderful books. So, I knew I needed a hook, because we were starting from scratch, a new campaign, new characters, everything. So I decided, what better way to start a game, then have all the characters meet at a tavern...that was burning to the ground.

You see, as part of the pre-game set up, we established that the party had hired a mercenary half-orc to help them on an adventure. He was angry over his previous employer, the barkeep, for firing him, so first thing in the morning, he set the tavern on fire. When the party got up for their morning "liquid wake up call" they found themselves gathered in a crowd of people outside the burning tavern. They spotted there merc, acting a little suspicious outside, trying to act like one of the spectators at the fire. Of course, only one party member caught on to what he did...

So, in other words, I just literally decided to make ashes of the old cliche, and it was a lot of fun. Not sure why I'm posting it here, it just amused me...

People meeting at a minor disaster site turns out to be a great way to get strangers talking to each other, it seems...

Our new campaign started with us bruised and locked in a cell deep under the city of Sharn, with no memory of the last 8 hours. Turns out we were about to be sacrificed.

Our party met when we all ended up in the middle of a bar brawl. None of us knew each other but we were all trying to suppress the same instigators so we kind of ended up together by default, and we just kept adventuring after that. It was kind of amusing because at first a couple of our party members mistook another one of us for one of the idiots that started it, so we almost ended up with dead party members before our first adventure.

I enjoy killing off highly important people right from the get-go, in order to shock my players, and reveal an entire series of events that could either A) Result in a way to bring said importants back to life, B) Reveal a conspiracy of assassination, or C) Both.

Or sometimes I just like to crash a ship into the tavern to start things off with a BANG!

I think my last campaign started at a tavern with the man in the next stall rocking back and forth and muttering something about Deja Vu :D
