| #2adun_irvingDec 24, 2010 19:48:07 | "Nobody told me a spiky plant would hurt! It's like that lady who wasn't told her hot coffee would be hot!" |
| #3pluisjenDec 25, 2010 9:30:39 | I see a law about putting safewarnings on restaurant menus that say "don't eat the bones", "don't eat an entire artichoke" and "warning: cutlery not for consumption" coming up. Maybe a "menu non-edible" as well? |
| #4homicidal_squirrelDec 25, 2010 15:22:59 | You would think after the first painful leaf he would have realized there was something wrong. Instead, it appears we have a late entry for the 2010 Darwin Award. |
| #5mock26Dec 26, 2010 3:31:52 | "Nobody told me a spiky plant would hurt! It's like that lady who wasn't told her hot coffee would be hot!" To be fair she did have a valid claim. By company policy the coffee was supposed be served at 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit. (Other establishments serve their coffee at a much lower temperature and even at home most people serve coffee at around 150 degrees.) At that temperature spilled coffee will cause 3rd degree burns after 2 to 7 seconds of exposure. Coffee should not cause 3rd degree burns. Heck, at that temperature you cannot even drink it without seriously burning your mouth. Additionally McDonalds had been cited over 700 times for burns caused by their coffee over the course of 10 years and they did nothing to remedy the situation. They really were negligent in that regard. Also, the woman in question did not sue for millions of dollars. She initially only sought money to cover her medical expenses (something $10,000 to cover money she had already spent plus an addiitonal $15,000 for expected other expenses). McDonalds instead offered her $800! Only after that did she seek higher amounts, first $100,000 and then $300,000, both of which McDonald's rejected. After the case it was the jury who awarded her $2.7 million in punitive damages. A judge later reduced it to $480,000 (plus $160,000 in compensatory damages for a total of $640,000). McDonald's later appealed and and the two parties settled out of court. |
| #6mock26Dec 26, 2010 3:34:35 | I love this from the article: "It takes a sophisticated diner to be familiar with the artichoke." Seriously? That is to damn funny! |
| #7yaeriDec 26, 2010 4:37:36 | If this guy wins his court case, I'm coming over to US restaurants and make loads of money by ordering clams and eating their shells. |

| #9ADHadhDec 26, 2010 15:13:39 | I've never seen an artichoke in my life (I didn't even know it was called this in English); I wouldn't know how to eat one either. I'd probably try to gnaw on the hard parts as well. I don't think I would sue though. |
| #10ViolenceJackDec 26, 2010 19:25:01 | I admit, I had no idea how to eat an artichoke before reading the article. But I do know that if it hurts to eat it, you don't eat it. I accidentally got a barnacle shell once, but only once and it was no big deal. As for the coffee thing, it's not such a small deal as people make it out to be, but it was outlined above. Yes, we have an overly litigious society. The coffee thing is not a symptom of it, however. |
| #11pluisjenDec 27, 2010 10:06:36 | From the pictures I've seen of an actual artichoke and the descriptions in the article, it sounds like that thing is only slightly harder to eat then the plate it comes on. And honestly.. if they give you something in a high-class restaurants that is borderline inedible, wouldn't you start by complaining about the terrible food you were given (that was probably damn expensive as well) before you started to voraciously devour something that hurt with every bite? I don't know about other people but if I go to a good restaurant, I except to be served things that are actually pleasant to eat... |
| #12pluisjenDec 27, 2010 10:35:35 | Yes, even blue cheese is supposed to be pleasant to eat. They might not be your taste, but at the very least they should not actively hurt you while being consumed. (Also I like blue cheese on occasion) |
| #13homicidal_squirrelDec 27, 2010 10:51:34 | You always have the option of sending food back if you don't like it. If it is painful to eat, why wouldn't you send it back? |
| #14Cpt_MichaDec 27, 2010 15:53:52 | I thought this was why lobster and crab are concidered delicacies. Because the shells are so difficult to eat that only the rich can feed their kids lobsters early in life so they can get use to eating the it. Actually overhere, not too long ago Lobster was "commonfolk" food. Because it was 1 plentiful, and 2 it's a bottom feeding animal. And you don't eat the shell of a crab..... wtf? |

It seemed to me that that acronym was MODed not because of what it stands for but for its usage. |

To me it seems the acronym was removed because the original poster was openly questioning the actions of the moderators for locking a questionable thread and had absolutely nothing to do with the sex of the mod. |
| #20zombie_babiesDec 28, 2010 9:50:23 | Whenever I try some new food, I ask someone I'm with what to expect. Were he to have done that he'd have been told not to eat the whole thing. Aside from that, anyone this stupid is too stupid to be a doctor. |
| #21KlirshonDec 28, 2010 14:38:57 | Perhaps he stayed at a Holiday Inn® and his doctorate was printed on a napkin. |
| #22homicidal_squirrelDec 28, 2010 14:47:03 | Funny thing is a lot of Doctors that came from Cuba can go over to one of these Caribbean Islands medical schools and get their degree from there and then practice here in Florida. Most of them are idiots. My girlfriend went to Jackson hospital, which happens to employ a lot of them because it can put them to work in low income areas with low income people. She went in because she had badly sprained her ankle and was travelling out of the country to visit family. She asked for a pain killer and was given one. I don't remember the name of it now, but it turned out to be a painkiller that is given to cancer patients going through chemotherapy. |
