I used to Live Action Role Play.  If you haven't tried it you should.  It changed the way I thought about role playing.  I had many a happy time at Treasure Trap, anyone remember that?  I particularly remember a situation where a party of 9 people were held at bay by 3 orcs in a dark room making the noise of 14.  You also learnt that the simplest puzzel, the type of thing that would be obvious to the slowest of table top D&Der suddenly become a lot harder just by the simple fact of making people run and fight off monsters at the same time ;)

We're not laughing at you. We're laughing toward you.

But seriously... In the D&D world, LARp is a small subset, but not an insignificant one.

There are also divisions and/or variations of LARPing. Battle re-enactment (further divided by which war), battle revision (where the victory is not pre-determined by history), paint-ball and air-soft, Capture-the-Flag, and cowboys-and-indians or cops-and-robbers are all variations of LARP. But most folks would not call these things LARP, reserving that term for medieval fantasy battle. I would say that in such a case, "most folks" are wrong.

When I say LARP, I guess I really should clarify. We just use Nerf swords and what not to fight. We'll use paper wads as various "spells", but we don't dress up or get into character. It's just a way to test our sword skills. We'll do rounds like Capture the flag, Army vs. army, Battle Royale, free-for-all, and defend the fort.

Why do people feel the need to rank other's geekery (geekitude? nerdosity?).  The point is that people should feel comfortable in doing what they enjoy and not be judged by others and ostersized for their particular proclivities.

I've never had the time or opportunity to join a LARP, but I wish I had, and fear that it may be too late now.

I can also say that I just don't get the point of comic books. On entertainment for my dollar, story value, character development etc, I'd much rather read a novel.  And for a visual story, I'd much rather watch a movie or tv show.

So, where does that put me in your ranking?

Edwarddarkforest,

I've LARPed twice at GenCon but I've avoided the "physical" LARPs like a plague. I'm in my mid 50's and going toe-to-toe with a 20 something kid wielding a sword (I don't care if it's Nerf) who hates his dad does not appeal to me for some reason.  I enjoy the more acting improv type LARPs. They're cool. Too bad I couldn't squeeze one in at GenCon this year.

Agreed. The LARPS where you , for example, stay at a hotel for a weekend and have to RP appeals to me, not combat LARPs.

They both have their appeal.

When I was going to WWU, we had a Vampire: The Masquerade game on Fridays, and Werewolf: The Appocalypse on Saturdays; the former is far more social roleplaying while in the later, multiple combats are inevitable if not required. The most memorable sessions were where we did the opposite (fast paced vampire combats, and subdued, tragic, werewolf roleplay)

Hmmm...glad I did not get this book when I was tempted to, then. This is one reason why so many people who don't understand RPGs think that it involves dressing up and acting out.

I think with the right group, LARPing may be fun. But it is as different from tabletop RPGs and an MMO is (which is to say, as many differences as similarities).  Of course, I am old school and consider a "gamer" to be an tabletop gamer. Someone who plays video games and consoles is not, IMHO, a gamer...they are "someone who plays video games"  :-)

I mean, MMA, boxing, karate matches... those don't always have the intent to really kill the other guy, just to have a good fight, ya know?  Is that "mock" combat or "real" combat?

And having been in a suit of armor and swung padded sticks at someone (and gotten hammered in the chest such that I had trouble breathing for five minutes), I can tell you... there's force of blows.  I was quite proud of the bruises (through the armor).  That's why we wore real armor.

So... what intent is needed?

In MMA the intent is to win the fight.
Through submission or knock out.
I think the intent in such situations is to do enough harm to your opponent to render him unconcious or unable to continue. Close enough to count as "real" combat... to me.

Hitting each other with sticks, without the intent to render your opponent unconscious or incapacitated doesn't count.

In my opinion anyway.

Right.  MMA is not combat.  It's a fight under specific rules designed to mitigate injury and chance of death as much as humanly possible.  Combat typically entails killing.  If you simulate combat, you're not actually in combat.  You're participating in a simulation.  How accurate that simulation is (like if you get hurt or whatever) doesn't change the fact that nobody is trying to kill anyone else.  Foam covered swords sort of end that argument.  And that doesn't dismiss the real chance of injury (or worse) that these simulations pose.  But it isn't combat.  It's just a semi-dangerous simulation.

... so by one account if the intent is to win, by knock-out or submission, it's "real enough"?  Sounds like (at least some) SCA combat counts as "real enough" by those guidelines1.

And by the other account none of our combat sports count as "real", so being in the category of "mock" combat doesn't sound too sad.

I think mock combat is when the equipment and techniques used are deliberately terrible at causing harm (i.e. pillows or foam swords, tickle fights) and both combatants are doing it for fun and nothing else.
Is that clear?

EscherEnigma

And I think that if the "fake" weapons are still good enough to break bones (hence the need for real armor) that they're not so terrible, just not as lethal.

Boxing does cause actual damage and boxers fight to win, not for fun. You could say a friendly sparring would be "mock boxing".
With armored swordplay it's mock by the combatants not trying to actually kill each other (see: techniques). If they were, they would probably be using axes, maces and warhammers instead of swords and would be aiming for weak spots (like exposed neck under the helmet).
