I can honestly say that I wish there was so little to report in my city that things like this actually made the news. I wouldn't call that a fail at all. Also, april first was just a few days ago. Newspaper prank?

Man, just think if she saw a pair of sneakers up in a telephone line...

I sell computers.

Today a man called me because the printer he bought from us "didn't have a manual". I explained to him that the manual actually came on a pdf file on the CD that was most certainly with the printer. He repeated - near panicked, I might add - that he didn't have a manual so he didn't know what to do. I told him to run the CD. He said he didn't know how without a manual.

Giving up on this tactic, I told him that the manual was available, for free, on the manufacturer's website. He insisted that he needed a printed manual. I told him no such manual exists, at which point he declared he was going to return the printer and buy one that came with a manual. Realizing that he was going to have the same problem with most of the printers we stock these days, I grudgingly told him that we would print out the 130 page manual from the manufacturer's website, and that he could pick it up tomorrow.

I've had a man with four - count 'em - freakin' four fake antivirus programs on his computer that were either viral or spyware themselves. I've had someone who didn't know his own cell phone number. And this is just this week.

These people, the kind that crap themselves in absolute wonder at seeing a damn hat in a tree, exist by the thousands. It is a frightening thing.

...Hmm, that rant seems at odds with my earlier post in the thread. I will go on to clarify: While I think it's wonderful that there was so little crime, etc, to report that they actually ran a story about a hat in a tree, the brain-killing stupidity of the lady's quote is bothersome and quite worth the FAIL.

Well... I don't know my own cell phone number either Tongue out I've stored it in the cellphone itself because I cannot be arsed to remember a 10-digit number that I hardly ever use.

Try dealing with idiots who must have you activate the prepaid phones they just bought because they can't figure out how. (Despite detailed and overly redundant instructions. Boost Mobile literally asks you to find the various numbers five times over the course of the activating call.)

I blame the unknown cell number on those prepaid phones, BTW. When people lose a phone and just buy a new one without bothering to transfer their old number, it's no surprise they don't really care about the new one. Or the one after that. Or the one after that. Or the one after that.

I don't know my number either. I got a new number on my cellphone when I moved--over a year ago now--and I still can't reliably remember it offhand. (I'm getting better, but still not quite there.) I never call my own cellphone and I almost never give out my number to anyone else, so I never have any reason to remember it.

Also I think phonenumbers are an outdated concept. They should be replaced by something more personal, I mean come on 90% of phones that come out today are connected to the internet and have keyboards; why the crap not just get access to an online phonebook where you can add people by name instead of remembering a silly 10-digit number?

I mean come on; you can practically go and add a "call this person" to damned Facebook and you suddenly can call 90% of the population without ever remembering a phonenumber again.

This must be one ugly hat, I mean first someone leaves it in a tree, and then some lady finds it, but she doesnt keep it, she just sticks it on a fence post, waiting for the owner to come by and pick it up. On a fence post! Like outside, where anyone could take it, but appreantly no one took it, and theyre sayin its gonna be destroyed if they dont show up? Jeeze man someone just take the damn thing! Its gonna be destroyed! Have you no feelings!?

Dutch ones are even easier. It's not about complexity, it's about willingness to invest brain capacity into remembering them. I don't have any willingness.

First off I don't have a car and second off I don't have anger management issues, so I'm not going to be violent just because someone happens to park where I would want to park.

That's precisely why I fear going to jail. If I were doing something wrong it would be my own damned fault, but I fear getting sent away for something I didn't do.

Or maybe I just have too much faith in my fellow human beings.

That is a good possibility. Not that paranoia is much help for stopping identity theft anyways.

On that subject: while this (the last article on the page) is believable, it is quite dastard.

It seems I've accidently equated a bunch of you with a woman who falls down in awe at the sight of a hat in a tree. I apologize.

How can you not know your own cell phone number, though? If someone asks you for your number, you actually have to whip your phone out and read it off to them?

And I should clarify about the cellphone guy. He was bringing his computer in for repair, and thus had to leave his personal information so we could contact him when he picked it up. With his cell phone on his person at the time, he proceeded to give us his daughter's cell phone number, which we didn't find out about until we tried to call the number and reach him.

I usually just hand over the phone and tell them to copy the number on the screen. The number of times this happens on a yearly basis can be measured on one hand, so I simply cannot be bothered to actually go and remember the number.

If I supply it by email, I look it up in my phone. If I need to fill it out for a website, my browser will remember it for me.

I make like 1 phonecall per month and I only text 2 different people. Why on earth would I want to remember my phone number?
