I had a moment...

Thanks to some archers making a mid-fight appearance, my vampire got knocked down into negatives. Brought up by leader, knocked down again. Things were going badly. Death save time, rolled that 20. So there I am, up, but that was my last healing surge. But wait! I hadn't used blood drain, thanks to the encounter being split over two evenings! Move action to stand, there was an enemy right there, so I hit him with taste of life, easily... used my blood drain to get a healing surge, killed him, and then used a minor action for a healing potion to use that healing surge right away. So I ended my turn just barely unbloodied, with 5 temp hit points, the leader beginning to draw the fire of the archers, and free reign to go after those archers myself.

Favourite line from the battle: as I was finishing off the last archer, he muttered something about my being the devil, to which my response was "I am not the devil, but we are friends."

So... what was your moment of victory? Just so unbelievably cool that your actions/dice rolls lined up and you accomplished awesomeness?

Since we are in OTT, I am going to take this figuratively, and not literally for D&D.

I was playing short stop back in 1992.  Left-handed batter was up, so I was shading towards 2nd base.  The batter hit a ball up straight up the middle, so I sprinted to my left to make the play.  The ball hit the front of the bag and is deflected and I lost where it went.  I looked left, right, down, and couldn't locate it, when it landed squarely on the back of my neck and stayed there!  In an awkward position, I stood up as the ball rolled down the middle of my back, right into my awaiting throwing hand.  I quickly turned and fired a seed to first base...  only to miss the runner by a half-step.

*sigh*

The umpire came up to me during the half inning and said that he never wanted to call someone out as bad as he did at that moment.

Show
The play still actually made Sportscenter that night, which was pretty cool since I was in AA and the runner was safe.

I on the other hand did not understand anything from Jharii's ramblings. Was that about a sport or something?

It would have been fun to see that play, if only to see the look on his face when he "found" the ball. Guess I'll just have to use my imagination, since, even if it is on the net somewhere, I wouldn't ask someone to link to something that would personally identify them.

I've posted my pic as my avatar.  It's all good.    Yeah, I definitely had that "WTF?!" look on my face.

But I have searched high and low for that video.  I used to have a copy but lost it somewhere along the way.  I think my mom still has one.  I'll have to see if I can get it if she does.

Jharii, your interpretation was correct. I was hoping for something from any RPG or just plain old, ordinary real life.

That does sounds like an entertaining play, even if I am only vaguely aware of the first part of it. The bit about where you found the ball and the fallout of that is pretty clear.

I was in a tournament once.  I was down 2-0 in a three point fight.  After the restart after the second point was confirmed, the guy charged me trying to finish it.  I was faster (usually was back then - still am most of the time but the legs ain't gettin' any younger) and kicked him in the face as he came in and before he could do anything.  Two points for me.  Restart, he charges again and I get him exactly the same way for two more points and first place.  I went from doing very poorly to winning in a few seconds of elapsed time.  Sometimes it's the brain that wins.  Often it's the brain that loses, heh.  Being faster was good but what really did it was a change in strategy.  Anyhoo, it was pretty cool at the time.

Another time, but not another win: I was fighting for first/second again, IIRC and I was also fighting for the first time while wearing braces (teeth).  I had a mouthguard but it didn't do much but pinch my cheek between it and the metal braces when he spin hooked me in the side of the head, heh.  The ref looks at me (it was a pretty hard shot) and asks if I was ok.  I take my mouthguard out and it's completely filled with blood.  He sees it and asks if I can continue.  I looked at him like he was insane, sucked the blood out of the mouthguard, told him yes and put it back in my mouth.  I scored after that but still lost.  I didn't feel a bit bad about it, though.  Eventually I met the guy that beat me in a class at his school and we went on to become friends and have some seriously epic sparring sessions that were some of the most fun I've ever had.  Good times.

In both of the above, I was a kid.  My parents drove me to the tournaments and were watching.  I may have been 16 or so in the second one.  Don't rightly remember.  Anyhoo, the fact that I was younger contributes heavily to my perception of these events as 'moments of victory'.

As an adult, I've had some as well.  Here's one: We were playing our (at the time) annual Thanksgiving tackle football game.  No pads, no helmets, frozen ground and a blizzard - how football is supposed to be played (er, if you don't make your living at it and only do it once a year ;)).  I was having a really good game but one moment sticks out the most.  I was blitzing - as I always did on D - and got around their blocker (after this they assigned two people to block me  with mixed results).  I'm not small a big guy (what an odd typo, oh well.  I'm about 5'10"and 170 lbs) and the guy they had at QB was big but I was coming fast.  He gave me this look that was sorta like 'yeah right, whatever' - you know, more annoyed than worried - and goes to throw the ball.  I immediately jump, tip it to myself and take off for a few yards.  It was pretty cool.  The reason I consider it a 'moment of victory' is that it really helped us win that game ... 77-7.    Ok, it was just a really cool football moment for me.  Heh.

A bit of clarification (not that I'm a baseball expert, but I'll give it a shot):

Jharii was at the shortstop position, which is circled in white. The batter was left-handed (circled in black). Left-handed batters are more likely to hit the ball in the general direction of right field than they are toward left field. Knowing this, he moved slightly to his left (he's looking toward the batter), which is closer to second base (right behind the pitcher), because if the batter hits the ball that's where it's more likely to go.

The batter hit the ball straight up the middle (the gray line). It hit the bag (second base).

As you can see, baseball bases (called bags) are not flat. Because it hit the bag, the ball was directed upward instead of continuing into center field.

edit: Grrr. ZB snuck in while I was making my graphic and hunting down a pic of the bag.

I thought it may be.    Just a series of weird events and coincidences working together to perform a perfect (or almost perfect) outcome.

ROFLMAO.

That is absolutely brilliant, Jet!!  Better than I could have ever described it.

Sorry, ADHadh, I didn't think you were truly interested.  My sarcasm detector betrayed me.  My apologies.

Nice.    My turn for ignorance...  was this martial arts competition?

Actually, I thought he was kidding too. I was just bored. I'm just watching the pool fill. Slowly.

I was joking, but that graph did make it a lot clearer. I still don't see what's so great about baseball, but that's a different story ;)

Yep.  Taekwondo.  The fights I mentioned were just point fighting - as in, not full contact.  I've done those as well but have had no really dramatic moments yet.

Like a lot of sports, it's more fun to play than to watch.

Oooh, I used to train taekwondo when I was a kid. Got a tooth chipped this way.
Sadly, no moments of victory for me. Or I'm just that bad at remembering them.

My moment of glory was when I was a teen playing D&D. I've always been lucky and usually roll several 20's in a given hour. One time I was in a heavy battle. I was standing alone on the field all of my allies having fallen in previous rounds. I was weak and just had a few HP left. I ran up to the nearest enemy and rolled a crit, took him down. I didn't get hit on that turn so I ran up to the next one and bam what do you know another crit, they went down too. I basically kept getting lucky and avoided getting hit or just taking relatively low damage throughout the fight until I had downed all of my enemies. I was sitting there at the end with like 3 HP left and the field was empty. No one could hit me or take me down. It was awesome!

Of course the players were real mad because their characters were all dead, but it was fun for me...

In 2E, I had a couple situations like this.

In one, I was an elf Bladesinger in a party of four (forget what the others were) and we came upon a lair of 2 basilisks (but we only knew of one).  One guy has the bright idea to set a trap for the beastie and then we slay it at our leisure.  We get it trapped and the others are hacking away when I hear a roar come from the cave.  I manage to get above the cave just as the monster runs out, so I jump down, hacking with my longsword.  I roll a crit and max damage on both my damage dice for an insta-kill (DM's description was that I cut its head off).  The other party members are still hacking away, so I call "Aren't you guys done yet?"

Another time I had a Dwarf specialty priest of Tempus that REALLY hated undead.  We were fighting a swarm of them on the top floor of a temple of Cyric, and I enter one of my berserker rages and just start spinning like a top to take out all the skeletons around us.  Finally, there's no more skeletons, just a couple of vampires, so I let go of my Maul and fling it at the ceiling.  It breaks through and lets the sun in.  The chances of me even being able to wield the Maul was 5%, and once that happened, my chance to actually break through the ceiling was 15%.

Cool! though in my case I lost my players... They didn't want me to DM anymore after that...
