So, does anyone else here detest surgery (and painkillers [not that kind])? Any interesting stories regarding such?

My GF had a friend who used to work with her. He got sick and his grandmother gave him some cough syrup his grandfather had been perscribed. The next day he had a drug test at work. He was still in his probationary period and was going through the process of becoming a permanent employee. He took the drug test and tested positive for oxycodone. He ended up getting fired.

Painkiller is an awesome song and album by Judas Priest. You should give
it a listen.

I once had surgery on my broken finger.

When I woke up I was so high I was a apparantly making really, really rude comments to a rather hot nurse.

My dad recorded it on his phone. <(QoQ<)

I've never had an experience like this, but my dad apparently was constantly insulting and threatening his surgeon when he was high from anesthesia. It was a region vs region thing and I think he was in the army then.

I've only had surgery once and well... Bran does not like morphine. At all. In fact, it does not like him either. It hates him enough that it almost killed him. Aka I have an allergy to morphine that we didn't know about until I had the reaction to it. I haven't had surgery since then and I hope to never have it again.

The only time I've ever had surgury was when I was really, really young - eye surgury... I was way too young to remember what the anesthetic was like.

Other than novacaine at the dentist during root canals (which always wears off about halfway through - after nine root canals and countless other dental stuff I've pretty much built up a tolerance to both the novacaine and the pain...), the only time I've ever been on somewhat heavy painkillers was when I got a nasty case of bronchitis coming home from a Rocky convention in Vegas.

Going from 2000 ft. altitude and zero humidity to sea level and 60% humidity over the course of a few hours on a plane had me coughing up blood and bricks of alien green crap by the time I hit my changeover in St. Louis...
They gave me cough syrup with codeine, but I couldn't take it while I was at work cuz it knocked me on me arse - so I spent about $60 on Fisherman's Friend cough drops over the course of a week to get through my eight hours.
As soon as the bronchitis got better enough that I could get by without needing the codeine cough syrup, I poured the rest of it down the sink.

Didn't Pink Floyd write that song? Why were you thinking JP? Not bashing I like JP but I don't see the connection.

Yes Pink Floyd did write Comfortably Numb, great song by the way, I love the Floyd! But any way Judas Priest did a song called Painkiller, So when I read that Ragnar detested surgery and Painkillers, but not that kind, with a linky, my first thought was Judas Priest, so when I clicked on the link and indeed it was Judas Priest, well it was just a Hell Yeah moment.

And on topic, I havnt had sugery all that often, not since I was a kid anyways. And I was always gassed and passed out then when I woke up it was over, so never really a problem for me. Well the sugery part anyway, but I hate being stuck in a hospital, I hate everything about hospitals, the food, that hospital smell, the crappy paper gowns they give you to wear, how they come in and wake you up to tell you its time to take your sleeping pill, the list goes on, and on.

Demerol.
I passed out and when I woke up I went a'pukin'.
With a broke jaw.

Didn't take anything except tylenol after that...

I guess we don't want the kids hearing about stuff their doctor can prescribe for them.  Legally.  As in, totally not against the law.  At all.

I still had all 4 of my wisdom teeth when I joined the Army. At my first duty station the local dentists decided they all needed to come out. The uppers came out without too many problems, they prescribed me percoset, but I didn't need nor take it. But I hung onto it. After someone in the barracks asked about taking it off my hands I decided the safest thing to do was to dump it all down the toilet.

The lower wisdoms? Totally different story. They never fully rose out of the gums (and one came in sideways), so they had to cut my gums open, use a little saw to slice the teeth up, extract the chunks of teeth, and sew up my gums. They gave me percoset again. I decided that since I didn't need them before I shouldn't need them this time. I was wrong. When their painkillers wore off I was hurting badly enough that I couldn't sleep. I was gobbling ranger candy (800mg motrin tablets) like it was, well, candy. Ended up going to an all-night Army clinic near where my girlfriend's barracks where, they gave me something to tide me over until I could get back to my barracks and grab my percosets.

As for the percoset itself, I've heard stories and such about it, but all it did for me was enable me to function normally.

It all depends on the drug (and the person).  Oxy is very addictive - physically, too - and has a fairly quick onset.  Stuff that's of lesser potency like vicodin can become addictive because you rapidly adjust to them and legitimately need more to accomplish the same effect.  So, if your recovery were to take longer you may find yourself more likely to take more to get rid of the pain the same way one would at the start.  And that leads to physical addiction.  Stuff like Ativan (anti-anxiety) is even more frightening in that taking it for seven days can make you physically addicted in that you will suffer withdrawal effects if you stop taking it cold.  Effects like, well, massive anxiety.  I'm sure you can see the conundrum that would put one in.  ;)  But yeah, it's not always abuse that leads to addiction and that's why responsible doctors don't just pass the crap out like candy.

I had a similar situation. They first took out the ones on my right side. The bottom one they had to cut open the gum. I decided I didn't need the percs. I was very very wrong. Fortunately they also gave me a couple days of quarters because I was knocked out after taking that stuff. I don't understand the appeal for the pill-poppers. All it did was make me really really tired. In fact, it wasn't even that great for relieving the pain, it just made me want to sleep through it.

When I had my other two removed, the left bottom one was even worse. Even after cutting open my gums and cutting up my tooth into pieces, they still couldn't get it all out. They had to cut away the bone in my jaw to finally get it out. That hurt like a bitch. And it was a civilian doc who didn't understand the way the military works and that I can't just call in sick, so I didn't get any quarters. Well I'm not going to drive to or from work on percoset, not to mention things like handling explosives, so I had to suck it up and just down motrin and extra strength tylonel like it was candy. Finally I went back and told him I needed something different. Turned out there was another medicine that was an excellent painkiller, lasted longer than percoset did, and didn't make me drowsy. Why didn't I get that in the first place?

When they pulled my wisdom teeth they asked if I wanted a local or to be knocked out.  I immediately told 'em to put me under.  Mouth pain and I do not get along.  Anyhoo, they gave me IV somethin' (valium?) and told me to count backwards from 100.  I was out by 97.  When I woke up, there were three assistants next to me and my mom.  I was all like 'I got this' and tried to get up.  They had to nearly carry me outside.  We got in my truck and my mom drove to the pharmacy for my Tylenol IIIs (tylenol with codeine).  I was so ****ed up I was trying to get her to listen to music with me ... on my over 1000 watt stereo in the truck.  Man, I was all sorts of whacked for an entire day.

The pill poppers aren't that difficult to uderstand once you realize that most of the pills are basically euphorics, enhancers or both.  Euphoria is pleasant, no?  Enhancers make other stuff - even booze - work more quickly with less and heighten the fuzzy feelings an' stuff.  So they use it to add to a high or to make it a cheaper evening.  I know this cuz I read about the Ativan my doc gave me for my trip.  And it scared the hell out of me.  But yeah, I may have had an evening go slightly off the rails on vacation for forgetting that neat bit about enhancers (er, and the fact that ativan can also act as an amnesiac ;)).  Maybe.

EDIT: Oh yeah, when I broke my rib I was originally prescribed motrin.  The pain made sleep impossible so I told the li'l nurse man to **** off and get me something better.  He gave me vicodin and I only took it at night to get to sleep.  Worked well enough for a while anyway.

The first time I got mine removed I was told I had the option to be put under. I was all for that. One IV vs a dozen shots? Yes please. I should also mention that this was shortly after I joined the Army and I was still deathly afraid of needles (a few years of being a human pincushion changed that). Then I was warned that if I went to the hospital to be put under, everyone would think I was a ****. So being a typical macho teenager, I decided to go with the localized anesthetic instead.

I guess there is that. I did enjoy mixing my pills and booze.

I mean, I was sure right away cuz of the seriously traumatic experiences I had with braces (long story, but when an orthodontist is torturing you and then explains that even with surgery that would require breaking your jaw, your mouth would never be right and your teeth would never be straight, you start to wonder about the entire process) but I became even more sure when the surgeon described how they often have to kneel on a patient's chest to pull the teeth out of their head.  I was all like 'no thanks, man' when he told me that.

I guess there is that. I did enjoy mixing my pills and booze.

Most people do.    Here's a fun fact (IIRC ): stuff like vicodin and that can give you a slightly upset stomach.  Not from the pills themselves, but from additives placed in 'em in order to make taking them something less pleasant than it is.  Doesn't seem to work, though.  My friend's sister became hooked on percs a fraud of a doc would give her for whatever she wanted.  Hundreds at a time.  At first, it was use some sell more and then it was use 'em all and buy more.  She went from one of the best people I've ever met to, well, a junky.  Eventually she was so far gone and so desperate that when she was fiending and broke (pills is expensive - for percs, oxys, etc) and a friend suggested sticking a needle full of heroin in her arm because it was more intense but a lot cheaper, she did.  She died not that long ago leaving a junky husband (who since has seemed to clean up) and three kids behind.  Anyhoo, that's my good deed for the day.  This **** is serious, kiddies.  It doesn't seem like it but it is.  Damned serious.  I seen it.

Yeah I meant to ask about this as well, Did Ragnar become an ORK? Or did one of "them" steal his name?

This has been discussed a few times.  Our Ragnar says he is not the same person as this ORC.  I'm also pretty sure he's young (still in HS, IIRC) so it doesn't add up that way either.

I don't remember ever having taken painkillers stronger then like Advil or Paracetamol (which you can get for like 50cents a pack at the supermarket). Did get a local anestathic when they cut out a tooth though, and damn glad they did too... the sound of a tooth being crushed to pieces in your mouth is bonechilling.

But they just let the stuff wear off (I drooled for the rest of the day, so charming) and no follow up after that.

I'm pretty sure it's not him, nobody in their right mind would give him a position of power (No offense, Dan).

None taken. It's an accurate statement.

They gave me the option, and at first I was thinking local anasthetic since I don't like the idea of losing consciousness. Then they told me that if they did it and it didn't work properly that they'd have to scrub the whole thing and try another day. I didn't want to be away from work longer than was needed, so I told them to knock me out.
