I'm shipping up to Boston

Mar 08, 2010 17:24:22 Got this little trip coming, I'm going to visit Boston end of March.
Anyone has good suggestions on what to do while I'm there? I'll be playing tourists.
I hear Salem and the witch stories are a local attraction, is it something good?
I really don't know much about the city.... Any input appreciated.

Mar 08, 2010 17:56:40 I remember the museum of technology being pretty interesting. Admittely, I was something like ten at the time, and this is back in the ninties, so I have no idea if it's still interesting.

You could visit the various museums: Fine Arts, Science, etc. There's the Mayflower II, Plymouth Plantation (I think that's seasonal to the summer though), Plymouth Rock. All nice if you're in the mood to see what was my fifth grade field trip. If you're old enough, there's the Cheers bar (a long running sit-com was named after it). Hmm... The New England Aquarium. You could visit a few Revolutionary War battlefields. The U.S.S. Constitution (AKA "Old Ironsides", the oldest ship still commissioned in the US Navy) is ancored in Boston Harbor. In the western end of the state is Stockbridge, of Alice's Restaraunt fame. You could visit Cape Cod (it's kind of the off season). If you play Magic: the Gathering you might catch me drafting at Scholars' Books & Games in downtown Bridgewater on a Friday night (it's a small college town, nothing spectacular).

If you came up in the fall I'd recommend things like Spooky World, a seasonal horror theme park (I have a bunch of friends who've worked there almost every year for close to a decade).

I don't know where you are from originally, but a little warning: we can be mean up here. We drive like maniacs (because we are), and we value getting where we're going over your safety. If you are going under 75mph in the left lane... MOVE IT, SLOWPOKE! Which reminds me, the roads are confusing. You can be traveling on Route 128, I-95, and I-93 at the same time.

In fact, you can find some good info on m****.com, despite the fact that site is almost 4 years out of date. Careful, the language there is a bit strong, and you... I can't say M****? Ah, c'mon! You could also visit Mass.gov. (Can't say M****, the hell.)

In other news, remembered something else interesting nearby. Well, sorta Nearby. Depending on your route, you might go nearby.

But IIRC, the USS Nautilus, the first US nuclear submarine, should be around Groton, CT. So if you're driving near there, it might be an interesting detour if you're into that sort of thing.

Mar 09, 2010 8:35:08 Even though I always complain and hate on Boston, I typically enjoy myself when I visit. Although that's probably more due to hanging out with friends than anything else.

I remember having a good time walk around and looking at random stuff. It has a good "small town" feel given its cityness. The buildings look nice and old. If you want to be really touristy, there's the Duck Tours or something like that.

(I think I typically wind up in the college areas, but I don't think that'd be incredibly interesting if you don't know people who go there.)

I like ships so the Harbor is a must, USS Constitution, sweet! I just looked at it on Wiki.

The season's not that good, I would have prefered summer or fall but I have the opportunity to go now.

I'm sure I'll like the fiery temper of Bostonians (sp?), must be the irish blood, plenty around here. But Boston is kinda down there instead of up here ;P (I'm from Montreal).
