| #1s-marrowApr 26, 2009 12:30:58 | I'm sure this has been stated in some form before, but you people are making my imagination bleed. Seriously guys. I saw your character last Thursday at the Hot Topic across from the dippin dots. Okay, maybe he was a bit chubbier, but still. Why are all of your Shadar-kai characters just huge angsty goths? You don't have to follow the examples of the terrible body pierced, leather clad, eternal-funeral-goer Shadar-kai that the core books seem intent on portraying. You could actually make a character who had some interesting motivation. Instead of, you know, being completely lame. I don't actively try to kill my players as a DM, but I can't make any promises if my subconscious hates your character so much. It's not like I'm asking you to dress 'em up in pink and yellow pastels. Work with me here, ne? Ok. Just had to get that off my chest. ![]() |
| #2dirtyfrankApr 26, 2009 12:36:55 | A Shadar-Kai that isn't Shadar-Kai like is basically a human. Why don't you just not let people play Shadar-Kai? Or how about not playing with angsty goth types? Of course Shadar-Kai do do more than just piercings and tattoos. They basically take part in any activity that can lead to extreme senses of pleasure or pain so the Shadar-Kai character could be big into sex, drugs, gambling, arena fighting, bar fighting, and/or intense combat training to name a few. |
| #3pigknightApr 26, 2009 12:38:18 | Shadar-Kai are all about the orgies. |
| #4Reg06Apr 26, 2009 14:21:49 | I thought the art work in the Shadar-Kai article went a long way to alleviating this image. The Shadar-Kai there had an Afro-Celt-Fey-Punk thing going on, which I think looked really cool, and other worldly. |
| #5stompie5Apr 27, 2009 11:32:07 | The Manual of the Planes does mention Shadar Kai are big on the places of pleasure, so they are cool in my book. |
| #6dirtyfrankMay 05, 2009 12:13:08 | Did you just want to vent or do you actually want input? If input then what exactly is your problem with these critters? |
| #7s-marrowMay 05, 2009 12:22:28 | I was just ranting after a tiresome experience with some of my players. My problem with Shadar-kai is they seem to make really annoying PCs who don't get along with the rest of the party. Plus, they just seem so unimaginative. The expansions that clarified them as a race of psychotic hedonists make them a little more interesting, but still really annoying as players. I also probably just have a low ability to take the gothic lifestyle seriously, which the Shadar-Kai clearly embody. I was just complaining without much purpose. Don't take anything I say too seriously. |
| #8zombie_babiesMay 05, 2009 12:25:16 | What's the stat mods for Shadar Kai? Jus' curious ... Goths aren't bad. It's the emos and vamps that blow. :P No - I am not now nor was I ever a goth. |
| #9dirtyfrankMay 05, 2009 12:28:35 | +2 Dexterity and Intelligence +2 Acrobatics and Stealth +1 to Fortitude |
| #10zombie_babiesMay 05, 2009 12:30:38 | Yeah, that's what I thought they were. I don't think I'll ever play one of those suckers. |
| #11baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 13:40:04 | I was just ranting after a tiresome experience with some of my players. The expansions that clarified them as a race of psychotic hedonists make them a little more interesting, but still really annoying as players. The players? Tell 'em about my half-fiend fighter that ya think is awesome. That may get their brains moving in the right direction with character quirks and such. Hell, I just got an email back from my DM and he thinks that the character is frakking awesome. |
| #12turalisjMay 05, 2009 22:08:35 | Shadar-Kai are all about the orgies. In your case pig, werewolf orgies ![]() |
| #13pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:28:43 | In your case pig, werewolf orgies I'm not kidding, they are all about orgies canically. |
| #14baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 23:31:06 | I don't think he was kidding you, piggy. I think he meant what he said. Can you blame him though? I mean, those poor little piglets! :P |
| #15pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:31:50 | Pig furries are suprisingly absent from my cache. |
| #16baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 23:34:04 | And I don't want to know any more. EDIT: I have experienced the horrors of when you begin to talk about your fetishes! |
| #17pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:35:16 | Cows. Moooooooooo! (NSFW) |
| #18baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 23:38:45 | What's so NSFW about it? ![]() |
| #19pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:39:56 | So you did follow the link? Haha! You're a sick bastard just like me. :D |
| #20baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 23:44:27 | It's wikipedia. An article about cattle. What the hell is so sick about that? |
| #21pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:45:54 | I expected you to think it was a link to naughty furry pics. |
| #22KillerGMMay 05, 2009 23:46:50 | Serves you right for having expectations. :P So ... um ... where would one find those? ![]() |
| #23pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:47:49 | Las Lindas is NSFW at times. |
| #24baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 23:49:41 | I expected you to think it was a link to naughty furry pics. No. I hovered over the link you placed and it said it was Wikipedia. So I knew what to expect. |
| #25pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:50:26 | How do you know it wasn't Furpedia.org? |
| #26baneofelvesMay 05, 2009 23:53:05 | because it said WIKIPEDIA |
| #27KillerGMMay 05, 2009 23:53:54 | (And furpedia doesn't exist. It would be WikiFur)![]() |
| #28pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:56:53 | And you said you weren't a furry. :P |
| #29KillerGMMay 05, 2009 23:57:30 | Just because I know how to use Google doesn't mean I'm a furry. :P |
| #30pigknightMay 05, 2009 23:59:20 | Right. ;) |
| #31KillerGMMay 06, 2009 0:01:04 | On a semi-related note, I think I might start my minotaur's portrait soon. ![]() |
| #32pigknightMay 06, 2009 0:02:51 | DON'T GOOGLE MINOTAUR THOUGH! TO MANY COW/BULL FURRIES! |
| #33KillerGMMay 06, 2009 0:04:45 | I already did. Some are really cool! |
| #34turalisjMay 06, 2009 0:09:17 | Congrats folks. We just hijacked this thread. |
| #35pigknightMay 06, 2009 0:10:41 | Are we talking about the furry or minotaur art? |
| #36baneofelvesMay 06, 2009 0:14:00 | Congrats folks. We just hijacked this thread. Well, it IS the off-topic tavern. It's supposed to happen at some point. It is an accomplishment to be proud of! :D |
| #37dirtyfrankMay 06, 2009 0:19:38 | So, are Shadar-Kai into furry stuff? |
| #38pigknightMay 06, 2009 0:20:16 | They are all about the orgies so... |
| #39cherubaddonMay 06, 2009 8:15:53 | (And furpedia doesn't exist. It would be WikiFur) DAMN YOU! I thought this was a joke... so... I actually typed that into my browser... serves me right... there go my SAN points... ...on the upside, I get a feat for it, so it's all good. |
| #40baneofelvesMay 07, 2009 0:08:00 | I have to wonder why have a separate race if they are basically just hedonistic humans? Why does every little "niche" need a "race" that encompasses it? You need to learn before you go throwing stones. An intelligent argument generally will get more people to listen. IIRC, the Shadar-Kai are humans that somehow ended up in the Shadowfell, and were warped by it's energies, resulting in a different species, distantly related to humans. Also, they were originally in 3E. |
| #41dirtyfrankMay 07, 2009 0:11:45 | IIRC, the Shadar-Kai are humans that somehow ended up in the Shadowfell, and were warped by it's energies, resulting in a different species, distantly related to humans. They followed The Raven Queen into the Shadowfell countless ages ago and during the many hundreds and thousands of years that they've been there they have evolved so as to adapt to their environment. |
| #42baneofelvesMay 07, 2009 0:14:20 | They followed The Raven Queen into the Shadowfell countless ages ago and during the many hundreds and thousands of years that they've been there they have evolved so as to adapt to their environment. I was close. I never read the Shadar-Kai article. I'd say I got 7/10 |
| #43dirtyfrankMay 07, 2009 0:18:21 | Part of it is in the Manual of the Planes in the Shadowfell section. |
| #44baneofelvesMay 07, 2009 0:19:33 | Never read that one, either. I think I made a fairly good guess. :D |
| #45turalisjMay 07, 2009 6:00:49 | Think of humans and shadar-kai like two offshoots of the same animal. Animal A is the original species, which lives in a forest enviroment. Some of A move into the mountains, where there is less foliage and the air is thinner. Those of Animal A who have moved into the mountains now have grey fur, larger lungs, and their feet are better adapted for climbing. Animal A and Animal B now are classified as two different species. Get it? |
| #46pigknightMay 07, 2009 6:36:35 | An enormous amount of races is a staple in fantasy games. |
| #47turalisjMay 07, 2009 6:37:04 | Well, I don't like what's in most religions, but not much I can do about it :P (not the forums to get started on a rant about religion) |
| #48MusicOfCreationMay 07, 2009 7:44:36 | I think there are too many races to begin with... Hitler did too. Just kidding :P Shadar-kai reminded me of Cenobites for some reason. |
| #49cherubaddonMay 07, 2009 7:58:22 | Hitler did too. Just kidding :P Okay, that is bad, of no taste, and just tactless on so many levels. But I haven't laughed this hard in months, I swear. |
| #50cherubaddonMay 07, 2009 8:20:07 | Contrary to popular belief and perception, Hitlers biggest beef was with communism, so the Russians, and he even told the world his intention on moving East for conquest and living space in Mein Kampf... but nobody was paying attention or didn't bother reading it, considering the author. Derail Partly true: if you mean biggest momentary beef (in the 30-40's), then it was indeed communism. But to him, that was a temporary problem - a crackpot political system that had to be overcome in order to get to the East. This latter goal had nothing whatsoever to do with communism, and was rather part of his skewed worldview that Slavs were a minor race, and thus, when the Germanic races expanded, it was only natural they would do so towards the East (much place, "inferior" people). So races were his main thing universally, because literally his whole worldview was based on their perpetual struggle. This, however, he was willing to temporarily set aside in order to, as you have said, crush the communists. |
| #51zombie_babiesMay 07, 2009 8:26:49 | You need to learn before you go throwing stones. An intelligent argument generally will get more people to listen. Huh? Learn? You then go on to say: I was close. I never read the Shadar-Kai article. I'd say I got 7/10 Never read that one, either. I think I made a fairly good guess. :D Emphasis added. So you call out TH for not learning while randomly spouting crap about a topic you then admit to never have learned about yourself? Wow man. Pot/Kettle FTL. FTL. Yeah, totally FTL. Summary: 1) boe calls out TH for making an uneducated assertion. 2) boe then admits to doing the same. Twice. 3) boe loses. Badly. :P |

| #54cherubaddonMay 07, 2009 8:41:55 | [noparse] Sweet Many thanks. |
| #55turalisjMay 07, 2009 8:46:09 | You could make a character for my MnM game... I have a feeling that one of my players vanished on me. |

| #57samyueruMay 11, 2009 12:34:47 | Contrary to popular belief and perception, Hitlers biggest beef was with communism, so the Russians, and he even told the world his intention on moving East for conquest and living space in Mein Kampf... but nobody was paying attention or didn't bother reading it, considering the author. A large part of Hitler (and the Nazi party as a whole) getting elected was there absolute and utter hatred of communism. There was a lot of "Red fear" around at the time. |
| #58reinharstMay 11, 2009 15:05:13 | In lieu of the topic title, I'd also like to rant and ask that people desist making the following: Halfling Rogue's, Dragonborn Paladin's, Elven Rangers/Druids, Eladrin Wizard's, Dwarven Fighter's and Half-Elf Bard's. Seriously, get some imagination* into you! * The following was sarcasm, FYI. Just in case nobody took the hint. |
| #59dirtyfrankMay 11, 2009 15:56:51 | There is something that I noticed with 4e dropping the class alignment restrictions. It seemed like for a while that everyone wanted to play a Paladin of the Raven Queen. Now just imagine how bad it would have gotten if the Shadar-Kai were a PHB race. |
