Why? Because I dont think we need to play with Pigs for replacement Organs when that encourages nasties like the swine flu to jump species and kill us. I support Human cloning for Medical replacement Parts, and I support Human cloning for the sake of creating humans. I now know that the only way humans will ever get to that other Earth in some other Solar System is if we send a machine that can create human clones.

I support Human cloning for all those lonely freaks who want a Clone of Jessica Alba, and I support Human cloning for those crazies who want to shoot and kill George W. over and over again. If Bob wants a pet Dragon or a living space ship, I support the Genetic engineering and cloning necessary to create it.

If you can imagine a reason for human cloning and Genetic engineering - I support it.

Ooh! Ooh!

I want a...genetically engineered bowling alley!
That would be awesome!
It could have kidney stones that we used for bowling balls!

I imagine that the only way human cloning will ever really catch on is if they add a stipulation that you have to make it brain dead before it finishes incubating or something along those lines.

I know I'll need several clones of myself, to replace the limbs I lose when I inevitably injure myself learning how to use my chainsaw hands.

Cloning yourself?: $4,000,000,000

Bribing your cloner to make a Y chromosome an X?: $50

Doing yourself?: Priceless.

Imagine if you didn't change that chromosome... is it gay, or masturbation?

It's gay. The clone will have their own memories, their own life experiences, and though they may be genetically identical they are made up of their own matter. In short, in every way except genetic structure they are their own person. It's just as much sex as identical twin incest.

Probably more like incest.
Still, despite the absurdity (Pigknight, that was funny as Hell btw), you know there's some ppl out there going, "Well, this is probably the only way I'll con my girl into a 3-way..."

While I am seriously tempted by both of these prospects, that doesn't seem too different from slavery and murder, clone or no clone.

I think the fact that I know that these are slavery and murder and still feel tempted might say a lot more about me than my support for human cloning.

Cloning is ok, but I'm really pushing for genetic engineering. Our bodies are simply the anchor that keeps us bound to physical existence; and we have the right to remake them any way we choose.

Time of the Devil's Advocate. Problems with genetic engineering and cloning. Technically, and infinite number of GW Bush clones can run for president (they are not the same person so it would be allowed.) There would be an even higher global population speeding up the inevitable passing of the Max Q (which is the maximum number of a species that can exist at one time before an ecological breakdown and mass reduction of the population through starvation or loss of habitat.) People who should be dead get the chance to stay alive (like say, infamous terrorist masterminds whose life could be extended.) the rich (who are the only ones who can afford all of this) never die and effectivly manage to create a new aristocracy that can control the world population forever, most senators, federal judges, congressmen, and political movers can extend their lives and without term limits (which can only be implemented by them) can stay in power almost indefinitely. A popular president will just clone themselves can have the clones run again. Thus the world goes to hell as the world over populates as life expectancy increases save the few who have the resources to never die of relinquish power. Sounds like a good idea now?

Yes, because most of that is nonsense. When you clone yourself, you do not create an identical copy. The clone has your genetic material, but it still takes eighteen years to mature, and during that time it will have its own experiences and develop its own outlook on the world. W's clone running for president is no more scary than his brother running for president, something some people believe is still likely to happen.

The aristocracy already have ample methods of perpetuating their family's wealth and power, and I don't see how cloning would be any more effective than the old fashioned way of extending your influence into the next generation: fathering legions of bastard children.

Cloning will not keep you alive forever, and the original will only be as good a predictor of the clone's personality as one identical twin is of another.

As for overpopulation, that is already a problem that we seem to be perfectly capable of exacerbating just by following our own perverse urges. I highly doubt that cloning will ever be a primary means of reproduction. It's cheaper and faster for two kids in the back of a volkswagen to make a baby than a cloning facility, and will be for a very long time. We will have to devise a solution to natural, Malthusian overpopulation regardless of whether or not we get to the point of mass-produced, independent clones (raised by whom?), and probably long, long before such a fantasy becomes even close to viable (why would you do such a thing anyway?).

Basically this is run-of-the-mill panic mongering.

I don't really believe that is possible. Even if you manage to download your intelligence into a computer (which I am not convinced will ever be possible), you won't live forever. There is no continuity of being with between your consciousness and the one in the computer. You've just created another being who shares your memories and will live forever, but the you sitting in the chair with a USB cord running out of your head will still grow old and die. Besides, the new creature may share memories, but he won't share your brain chemistry because he won't have any brain chemistry at all, so his reaction to stimuli will not be "your" reaction, but "your" reaction as modulated and approximated by machines based on past measurements of your changing brain chemistry.

The only way to live forever is to keep the one brain in your head right now alive, attached to organs that it can regulate as if they were your own. Anything else is just making duplicates of yourself to live out eternity while you rot like you always would have.

As Xykon put it, "Be a vampire, or a ghost, or an immortal with a paint-by-numbers portrait in the rec room. Hell, even a brain-in-a-jar in a pinch."

... no, not sure how much relevance that really has, but I liked it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the GitS-style cyber-brain actually houses, protects, and allows for the nourishment and preservation of the organic brain.

Not sure about that. I guess I should have looked up what "ghost in the shell style" meant before I replied.

I am in favor of cloning for the sake of organs and body parts. However, I am against cloning for the sake of creating more living humans. I can't put my finger on the exact reason for my opinions and I don't know enough of the issue to make a valid argument for or against it.

Partial cloning FTW. We're less than a decade, IMO, from being able to speed custom grow replacement organs in a vat of collagen.

Policeman shot in the line of duty needs a new Kidney? Grow one in a vat. His own. From stem cells extracted from his blood. We can do it now in small quantities... How long till we can do it reliably for cheap (in medical terms)?

Need a heart? Liver? Lung? Hell, you have diabetes? We'll grow you a pancreas. Your own cells, so no anti-rejection drugs needed.

I also support the creation of a technology to create cloned bodies with linked minds so that I can be in 20 places at once, as a distributed hive mind entity.

Also, this.
Asimov's Clone Song

The Clone Song

By: Isaac Asimov

Tune: Home On The Range

Oh, give me a clone

Of my own flesh and bone

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

And after it's grown,

Then my own little clone

Will be of the opposite sex.

Clone, clone of my own,

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

And when I'm alone

With my own little clone

We will both think of nothing but sex.

Oh, give me a clone,

Is my sorrowful moan,

A clone that is wholly my own.

And if she's X-X,

And the feminine sex,

Oh, what fun we will have when we're prone.

Clone, clone of my own,

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

And when I'm alone

With my own little clone

We will both think of nothing but sex.

My heart's not of stone,

As I've frequently shone

When alone with my own little X.

And after we've dined,

I am sure we will find

Better incest then Oedipus Rex.

Clone, clone of my own,

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

And when I'm alone

With my own little clone

We will both think of nothing but sex.

Why should such sex vex,

Or disturb or perplex,

Or induce a disparaging tone?

After all, don't you see,

Since we're both of us me,

When we're having sex, I'm alone.

Clone, clone of my own,

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

And when I'm alone

With my own little clone

We will both think of nothing but sex.

And after I'm done

She will still have her fun,

For I'll clone myself twice ere I die.

And this time without fail,

They'll be both of them male,

And they'll each ravage her by and by.

Clone, clone of my own,

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

And when I'm alone

With my own little clone

We will both think of nothing but sex.

I am for and against cloning.

I am for cloning of myself, but I am against anyone else being cloned.
