At the hobby shop I bought a bunch of cheap miniatures, and looked around the place. I stumbled upon quite a treasure, a Chessex $20 26X26 vinyl game grid. I bought it right away and the lady at the register told me, "Only dry-erase markers work on this, DO NOT use wet-erase markers, they will stain it and won't come off." (For those of you with these boards your probably already chuckling.)
The next day we still have nothing to do so we head to OfficeMax to get some dry-erase markers. I buy a $10 set and an eraser. When we get back to the hotel I obviously want to try out the grid so I make a mark and use the eraser. It won't come off! I scrub and scrub with soap, water, you name it and when i'm done it's not much better. Thank god I only made a one inch mark. We decide that we are going to go back to the store and ask what the deal is before heading home.
The next day at about 10 A.M. we leave the hotel and go to the mall, but when we get there the mall doesn't open for another hour and since we are on a time constraint to get home we leave. Later I check online and the product description says, "Only use wet-erase, dry-erase will stain."
It's good to vent.

My dad felt really bad and took me to the mall and gave me $50 to buy things. Of course I went straight to the hobby shop.

2x bamboozled. I have season passes every year for me and the fam at that Six Flags. They don't close (only during winter and only then well into November). They just don't run some of the rides when it storms.
2. One I've used personally, and I know it works first-hand, is transmission fluid (dexron-mercon). WARNING: THIS WILL remove the dry-erase, but it ALSO removes some of the tinting product used to give mats that "old parchment" look. Someone drew a whole 20 x 20 room with details on mine by accident, and the transmission fluid worked VERy well, much better than cleanser, alcohol, and a number of other home rememdies I tried.

Don't ask me why there was a permanent marker with the erasable ones or why it looked exactly like the non-permanent ones, cuz I don't know. ;) Anywhoo, it took me a bit to realize what I'd done. We thought the mat ruined, but we came up with a deperation plan. We used Shout. The stuff that takes stains out of clothes. And, it worked. At first, there were still some faint lines, but after a while the whole thing cleaned up nicely. So, if all else fails, give it a try. It worked for this gamer. :D

Major bummer about 6Flags StL. That park is a ton of fun even in the rain.

I think it got tossed in with the erasable markers after Sal used it to color that Lion mini black and yeah they did look similar. The look on your face when you found out was priceless though

Any sorts of these heavy cleaners will eventually start to wear down the finish of the map if used too much.
I first bought a big chessex map and instead of just a good old washcloth would regularly wipe it clean with 409 and Mr. Clean Eraser. After just a few short months the wet erase wouldn't come up well, and the face of the grid looked like a giant ink smudge.
So I ruined mine by going the opposite direction :P.
Goo-gone. Removes even permanent marker (sharpie) from plastic surfaces. It'll smell like oranges for a while but it works.
You're saying that as if that was a bad thing. :P
