#1 zombie_babies Jun 07, 2010 16:00:51	Where?  When?  Tell us where you'd like to go or, if you prefer, when.  Maybe both.  Whatever.  It could be someplace you've already been or someplace you'll never get to see.  So, where would you go if you could?  What time in history would you like to witness?
#2 EscherEnigma Jun 07, 2010 16:05:08	I wanna go to the ocean.  Back when I was a widdle lad, I lived in Connecticut, right near the coast (the dad was Navy, you see).  Well, I haven't seen the ocean since we all got uprooted and moved out to New Mexico.  So I really want to see the ocean agian. Probably going to take a day to do so this July.  Me and the sister are going to LA for a convention, so I figure it'll be a good chance to dash out to the shore real quick.  A different ocean then the one I remember, sure, but still.  Should be nice.

#5 modern_iconoclast Jun 07, 2010 17:21:48	I would go back to July 4th 1187 and try to prevent or correct a big mistake on the part of one of my ancestors and then I would get back to see how things changed. If it's worse (you never know), I reserve the right to go back and put things as they were. At least I would have tried. EDIT: I just came back... do you feel any different?

Note that this would be after sanitation of my body to get rid of the various illnesses that my new subjects would have no resistance to. Or I could just bring various vaccines and the equipment to replicate them. Of course, various personnel would have to come as well.

Another place (this time in the real world) is feudal era japan preferably before they began outlawing swords. I'm curious what it was like living with samurai, I've read a lot about it but a lot of what I've read conflicts.

Noooo! You've escaped this hellhole, gotten out... It hasn't gotten any better since you were here, so why would you possibly want to come back?!?! See? This is the New London side of the bridges - the Groton Submarine Base is off to the left across the river...

Well, from what I understand the rents aren't as bad as frisco, but ownership is.  Daily living is a bit more there than where I live (Starbucks test - I live on Starbucks, and the city prices are higher).  Lunch (not starbucks) runs around $10 (breakfast wrap, coffee, and juice).  A pack of gum (Orbit white) runs around $1.50 and cigarettes are about $10/pack (as opposed to $9 on LI).  What else... Oh, a street vendor muffin goes for $1.50, hot dogs about $2.  I don't buy much else, so can't give more numbers, sorry. However, I will say - the difference in price is marginal, the difference in convenience is tremendous.  I often tell people I absolutely LOVE working in the city.  I can get ANYTHING (and I do mean anything) in walking distance.

(New England = New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachussetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. One might theoretically argue that Long Island could be part of New England since it's basically equidistant between NY and CT, but it's still part of NY... )

As for when to see them, they generally happen most often around the equinoxes for some reason, and are generally strongest during the peak of the eleven-year sunspot cycle - but really, any time in the spring or autumn you can generally see them if you're anywhere near the Arctic Circle. I've seen a lot of those Alaskan sea cruises that advertise the Lights as one of the selling points for the cruises, and you can see them from most places in northern Canada... I just IM'd a friend up in Winnipeg to ask about them - she saw them once when she was younger. She says it was pretty intense. Aurora

"different" more like malibu/california.  Walk down any port town on the sound (either shore) and it's all the same @Mecha: true, but NY is not the "real" history - it's New Amsterdam.  Whereas the northern states were settled by the british, the dutch claimed the mainland.  That's why LI is the way it is.  It had more contact with the British (easier access across the sound, those days for the ships coming in), than it had with the Dutch.
