In before lock...

Seeing how everything is getting reported, locked and or deleted, I figured we should at least have some fun with it.

I would like to start a new posting trend. Every new post must be started with an "in before lock..." line.

Also, feel free to just reply to this thread with an 'in before lock..."

Thank you for your time...

In B4 Lock and all that jazz.

This is getting a little rediculous. I mean, I'm not happy about the so-called "debating" which Ragnar aptly illustrates in his sig, btw, but locking every thread isn't the solution.

As for the bans and thread lockings chasing new posters away. Umm, sorry, No...the so-called "debating" did that a long time ago.

All my opinion of course.

Nah... the debating that occurs in the OTT doesn't drive new posters away. If a new poster comes accross a thread he/she doesn't like, he/she could always ignore it or not post in it. You can't debate against someone who isn't posting.

I think the OTT's ability to derail a thread within the first 10 posts and the reaction given to those that come here looking for groups has done more to make new posters fearful of the tavern. Even the, it isn't enough to make every new poster turn and run from the OTT.

Um, I respectfully disagree. Every thread that is discussed has a political edge to it. New folks come in from time to time and they'll start a thread but it gets ignored and quickly vanishes from the front page.

It's the same five or six posters "debating" these important "issues". Even worse, in most of these cases when a new poster does post a topic it is immediately met with several answers like the one with the guy advertising his graphic novel.

We either ignore them completely or redicule them. Not very inviting. Add to that that the first ten topics of the page either about guns, religion, and politics and the fact people don't really expect to find that being discussed on a D&D site, well it gets a little uncomfortable.

Not to mention that there were groups established precisely so the regulars could discuss those things and aren't used.

Oh never mind...

There have been a few times I've gotten in after the lock. I don't know what is up with the lock procedures these days, but after they switched to the current software locks became finicky things. I don't post as much as I used to, yet I still managed (just over a year ago) to get in 7 minutes after the lock on one thread. Four more replies were posted in that thread after it was "locked".

But then, this is in step with what I expect from WotC's digital ventures these days. Magic Online III released 3 or 4 years ago and still doesn't have leagues back up. These boards are almost as balky as Army Knowledge Online (your tax dollars at work). No D&D books released in pdf format anymore.(Yeah, that will stop pirates from pirating official stuff!... Ok, they're still pirating... Well, at least now we don't make money on D&D pdfs!) DDi Character builder is no longer a download, so now you MUST have an active net connection. Magic: the Gathering Tactics was a year late, yet looks and plays like a bargain bin game would have 10 years ago.

If their internal e-mail is just as reliable then I would suggest they use empty soup cans and string for inter-office communication.

The way I see it, the people here discuss what they want to discuss.  In other words, try posting something to be discussed that isn't what you'd consider bad or something that'd drive new people away and we'll all see what happens.  I think there's a reason that certain topics play well here.  There's a certain type of person that frequents the place and that's what they like to talk about.  The audience sets the content.

New posters also have it tough here because, in large part, they only come here to look for a group cuz they give up on finding the correct place to do so ot they're here to pimp their webiste, graphic novel, daughter's webcast, book, game, whatever.  So yeah, we get sick of that crap because they come here and don't offer anything.  They only ask for things - and things that are frequently against the CoC to ask for, by the way.  This isn't a catch-all forum like a lot of people want to treat it and those of us that do understand that get tired rather quickly of people trying to abuse this place.

Ok... This has exactly what to do with the military getting grossly overcharged for things? Maybe I should dig up the paper work from the barracks room I had in Texas. Curtains for a 2 foot high by 3 foot wide window cost $80. That's one I recall off the top of my head. Oh, and that if when I left my barracks room when I deployed if it didn't pass inspection the civilian maintenance company charge me $75 for $10 worth of cleaning supplies and the free labor the Army would loan them to clean the room.

The Army gets bilked, soldiers get bilked, the taxpayers get bilked... The civilian contractors are the only ones who make out ok, and even then probably only the bosses.

That's what they think. The DDI Compendium has been pirated and can be downloaded and used without a subscription. I'll be surprised if there isn't some workaruond for the CB (whether it involves somehow pirating the online CB or just getting ahold of the data and dropping it into the old one) within a few months.

It certainly would.  Then we'd get less clutter here.  It would also help if people looked at the subforums before posting here, if there was a clearer path to the LFG forums and if people would read the CoC to see what can and can't be posted.  Advertising, for one, is prohibited.  That's an all too common type of post here.  But that's in a perfect world and a perfect world we ain't got.

The reality, though, is that the users do not set the content.  They may start the content but the Moderators set the content.  After all we are here by their good graces and as such abide by their rules, not our own rules.  As such it is our best interest to abide by their approved topics and abide by their rules (and by default we agree to abide by them when we sign up), because if this section does not need to be here.  The moderators can get rid of this section in a heart beat, and we need to ensure that that never happens.

While true, you do leave one thing out (and it's important): when the moderators come here to make mod decisions, it is at the behest of the users.  Therefore, the users still decide, to some extent, what content flies.  It all comes down to what the powers that be decide to allow, of course, but to make it appear that we've no power to steer the ship is just not accurate.

The majority of the threads here recently were something technically we should not have been discussing.  They went on until a fight popped up or until an alt appeared.  That tells me that nobody here cares about off limits topics being discussed.  They only care about certain people speaking in a certain way.  So let's all stop pretending we're playing by the rules for some greater good - cuz that ain't what I see.  What I see is a group of people that, for the most part, like to discuss certain stuff.  Some of this group don't like others of this group and report away in order to get those people banned.  If it were about worry over the tavern, the threads would have been reported for their content long, long before the fights even happened.  Instead, we have vendetta under the guise of defense.  I don't care about CoC violations getting reported - that's what's supposed to happen.  I do, though, care about people pretending they're doing something for some reason that they're very obviously not doing it for.

Uhm... no.  The moderators, when acting in their official capacity, are a purely destructive force.  They do not create, they do not set, they do not promote or encourage.  They stop, delete, and lock.  They are where content goes to die.

That's not setting content, that's restricting, which is very different.

Please do not take this the wrong way because I like you and my comment is meant as a generalization and NOT a suggestion, Escher, but if you find the rules too restrictive here then you can always go someplace else to post.  Every single poster who registers here agrees to abide by the restrictions put in place by the mods/owners/whoever, and as such we should strive to post within those guidelines.  Posting outside of those guidelines serves no good purpose other than to get people pissed off at each other and/or the mods.

As for the mods being a destructive force, well, from a certain point of view that is true.  But, it must be remembered that they are only going after content that is outside of the rules and regulations of this site.  If people did not break the rules then the mods would not be stopping, deleting, and locking posts.  Blaming the mods for doing their jobs is just plain ridiculous.  The blame goes on the people breaking the rules.

And as for locking threads, I completely understand why the threads are locked.  Some threads are locked because if the mods only deleted content some posters would just resurrect their deleted content and would jump start the "problems" that got the content deleted in the first place.  Most of the mods here have enough experience with this to know when to delete and when to lock, and we should trust their judgment.

The problem with this is that the rules are not clear when it comes to the OTT. Some of the threads closed are closed because they are deemed political; however, there is nothing in the CoC that states that political discussions are prohibited (go ahead, look it up in the CoC).

As has been mentioned, even violations of the CoC are not automatically deleted or locked by the ORCs. Someone reports it in order for the ORCs to become aware of such violations. One of the rules is that one is not allowed to advertise, yet we have a thread up that is an advertisment for a 4E character sheet app for the iphone or ipad. the ORCs have yet to lock or delete it. They have locked and deleted several threads since that one thread went up, but the thread has not been touched.

That is a problem with nearly every forum on the internet.  I personally think that this site is much better than a lot of the sites out there when it comes to moderation.  Is it perfect?  Of course not.  But then again, no moderation is perfect.

No offense, but I did not see your "set the content" post as needing a response.  I think you are wrong on the Mods not setting content.  Content is limited by the Terms of Service/Code of Conduct of this site, and while it is possible to occasionally slip in content that is outside of the Code of Conduct, it can still be pulled by the Mods.  So, the mods set the content through the fact of controlling it.

As for enforcing the rules, the mods are not limited to adhering strictly to the Code of Conduct.  They have a lot of personal leeway to use their judgment to determine if a particular post or a topic will be a problem.  It is impossible for the site to cover every possible contingency with a specific rule, so they use their own discretion.  As such I have absolutely no problem with any possible inconsistency with moderating the forum.  They are bound to make mistakes, and when people habitually "push the envelope" then it is to be expected that the mods will be a little more harsh with those people.  And, Yes, they are just enforcing the rules, because they operate under their own "Rule 0."  There is no RAW when it comes to the forums.

... not as curious as this though.  You go from saying they aren't bound by the CoC to saying that yes they do make mistakes to saying they can't make mistakes.  And you apparently did that with a straight face.

Edit: None of which explains, really, why if you aknowledge that yes the moderators do make mistakes, that yes the mods aren't working strictly from the CoC, that yes the moderators do in fact punish people not for breaking the CoC but for breaking something that it really is quite unreasonable to expect a random person to know before they get hit for it... why you think it is perfectly justifiable to say "well you shouldn't have done it" to that person regardless of the actual conditions and situation.

@EE and Mock:

EE: you say the mods "prune". This does not help your position but is an apt description of MOD behavior and function. Just like a landscaper sets the shape of a bush, the mods set the shape of a forum: they cut off avenues of growth that do not fit the desiered goal and the bush/forum subsequently dies or grows back in ways that are within the desired shape. Targeted destruction is creation, like shooting a star out of a sheet of paper.

If a company is given $500,000 to work with and they only spend $300,000, that's a good thing, they have extra money. Granted a chunk of that probably goes to pay bonuses to certain people, but it's still a win for the company. If the same thing happens in the government it's a bad thing and people scamble around at the end of the fiscal year blowing money on any ridiculous expensive **** that they can remotely justify (well we're an office, so we need pens, I can buy this $1 box of pens here, or I can buy a bunch of space pens for $20 apiece, ok space pens for everyone).

If a company is given $500,000 to work with and they only spend $300,000, that's a good thing, they have extra money.

Actually, if a division within the company is given $500,000 and they only spend $300,000 because they had a lucky year, then the company happily takes that extra $200,000 and the next year that same division only gets $300,000 budget. Which can suck for the division if they don't have a lucky year because they'll need to suck up for more money and will lose browniepoints for not being as efficient as the previous year (despite luck being the main reason for them spending so little)

So in most companies, if you get $500,000 in budget, you spend all of it, so you get the same amount of budget next year. Even if you dindn't need the money now, you still waste it, because you might need it next year and you won't get it if you didn't spend it this year.

Yes, that's stupid. But it's how these things often go.

All of which does nothing to counter my point.  The mods are not a creative force, they are a destructive force.  Whether you approve, disapprove, or are completetly neutral towards their actions, that doesn't change it one iota that they do not, in any way, shape, or form, create or set content.

Re: The army spending way too much

Not just an army problem, actually.  It's part of how the government budgets things.  You budget X amount for task Y?  Well, regardless of whether you need the full X for task Y, you'll find a way to spend all of it, because otherwise next year you don't get as large of a budget.  The way it's designed it actually discourages government agencies/offices/whatever from being frugal because not only do they not get rewarded for operating under budget, they get punished
