| #3DralenanDec 04, 2012 3:23:03 | Well honestly, your IQ has nothing to do with your beliefs or preconceptions. Brilliant people join cults, having a high IQ is no innoculation to either ignorance or delusion. It can tell you about someone's potential for intelligence, nothing more. For instance, D&D players are generally intelligent people, and access to statistics and the physics of dice rolling are readily available...yet dice superstitions are a cherished tradition in the game. Proving someone wrong, or changing their beliefs is not a way to raise someone's IQ. Interestingly, giving someone a few cups of coffee will raise their IQ. So barring a mass distribution of good coffee to the world, this isn't going to change people's intelligence. What it will do is create a really interesting hindsight bias, and next year people will be mocking 2012 promoters, when they themselves entertained it in the first place. I've come to accept that despite all evidence to the contrary, people are generally smarter now than ever before. The problem is, with that capacity of knowledge, there is a cultural resistance to learning. There is a greater potential for intellect now than ever before, but in general, most people don't want it. 2012 is a thrilling idea. It's kind of a disturbling fun idea. It's popular for the same reason horror movies are popular...it is a way of externalizing and looking at fear, without having to live it. Of course, as it grows closer, it becomes less of a distant fear and more an impending doom, so the next few weeks will be interesting to watch. We'll get through 2012. We'll laugh about it. And we'll pick a new apocalypse, because we love them so much. We will always have our delusions, and our delusions will always have us. |

Well, it's been my experience that people are dumb and getting dumber. I could go on to explain why this is, but it would hurt somebodys feelings and I just got back from being banned... |
| #5zombie_babiesDec 04, 2012 8:27:48 | No matter what IQ is or isn't or is or isn't indicative of, the fact remains that NASA is actively trying to slow evolution. You see, doomsday cultists are gentically inferior cuz they're, you know, insane. If they want to up and off themselves before some impending 'disaster', well, good. NASA is striving to keep these crazies alive. That's bad. |
| #6zombie_babiesDec 04, 2012 11:39:04 | Agreed. |
| #7Robin_HoodlumDec 04, 2012 12:22:19 | D&D players are generally intelligent people. ![]() |
