I went to the beach today to find an apartment for my mom. I found a nice place, decently priced, in a decent area. She will be about 4-5 blocks away from the actual beach. These are pretty short blocks.
It was an interesting trip getting to the beach. I could have taken the shorter route, but I really didn’t feel like paying a toll for what amounted to saving five minutes off of my drive. I had to drive through a not-so-friendly neighborhood, but it’s cool. I used to come down to that area fairly often when I was working as an interpreter and my clients had to go to immigration hearings. The immigration building is now closed. They moved the offices to other locations. If I remember correctly, they split up the various offices that were housed in this one building, into three different buildings in three different locations. One of the things was the shopping center across the street from the immigration building. The shopping center used to have a bunch of law offices for attorneys that practiced immigration law. Since the immigration building is gone, all the law offices have moved out. Because of this, a lot of the other businesses that were there are gone as well. There used to be several restaurants and other types of stores that are now closed. There was even a shoe store that is now closed. The whole place seems dead. There are only 2 businesses that I saw that were open. One was a Big Lots, and the other one is a check cashing store.
So that’s the sad part of my trip. The rest of the trip was a bit… disturbing. While driving through this area I got to a red light. I stop and wait. I turn and look to my right and what do I see? An old lady with her skirt pulled up above her hips, underwear down by her ankles, crouched down, peeing in an alley. WFT? Seriously… WTF?
Drive down a little more and I come to another red light. I look over to my right again and what do I see this time? A transvestite hooker wearing short shorts bending over. How do I know it was a transvestite? Trust me… it was obvious.
Drove about 3 minutes more and was out of that scary area. I think next time I will pay the toll to avoid the trauma caused by driving through this area.

That area is actually not close to where she will be moving to. I just took that route to avoid paing the toll. The area that she will be moving to will be a good distance away from there. it only took me about 5 mnutes to drive through this area. It took me much longer than that to get to the area I saw the apartment in. The good thing about where she will be moving is that it in an area that has a good police presence and it is an aarea wher a lot of families are living. I talked to one of the guys that lives at the apartment building and he said that in the entire building, there were probably 3 or 4 apartments that were rented out by people who weresingle. Everyone else renting was a family. I also used the crime report function on the county's website and the crime in the area is minimal and not in the area.
Sadly, there are places like the one that I drove through scattered throughout Miami. Some are worse than others. There is an aread down here in a city called Opalocka that is all sorts of messed up. It is called the triangle because the atreets form a triangle. there is only one road in, and it is the same road you have to take to get out of the area. it is a good size area. You don't want to get lost in that area. Hell, you don't want to go to that area... you may not make it out.
