| #1rakeFeb 24, 2009 9:05:31 | So I've been an aspiring game designer since I was 12, and ever since I discovered tabletop RPGs I've been deconstructing them and picking them apart to better understand what makes an RPG good or bad. Presently, I'm elbow-deep in my pet project... an answer to Mutants & Masterminds or the HERO System. A supers game that isn't a nightmare to learn (HERO) or an excercise in game-breaking (M&M). What I'm looking for from you: Some ideas regarding interesting superpowers (or unique skills, or even super-vulnerabilities... any traits, really) that you might actually want to create and play with in a tabletop 'superheroes' game. Same goes for super-awesome-how-did-he-just-do-that moves and maneuvers; I want those, too! I think I've got the basics fleshed out, but I'd like to hear some ideas that gamers might actually approach such a game with, to see if the framework I've created can actually be used to build the powers and characters that come to mind. Help an aspiring game designer out, and hit me with some ideas. |
| #2rakeFeb 24, 2009 11:00:22 | Helllp meee... Helllp meee... Helllp meee... |
| #3lofgrenFeb 24, 2009 11:03:32 | Hmm. I've never played a game with super powers, so I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for. Do you want general power sources like, "My character can control magnetism," or individual feats like, "My character can fly," or specific power applications like, "My character can use magnetism to fly?" In my writing I like to make stories about characters who have some but not all of the secondary abilities that are assumed with super powers, such as the ability to see while invisible, or anchoring abilities for your super strength. While fun to write about, I'm not sure how much fun they would be to play. |
| #4rakeFeb 24, 2009 11:14:27 | I'm mainly asking what you'd play if you actually decided to sit down and play a supers-style tabletop RPG. What powers, skills, limitations, or combinations thereof would interest you? If the project that I'm working on is going to be any good, it needs to have the ability to simulate the character concepts that gamers want to use. This is sort've a combination idea mine / acid test for the framework I've fleshed out thus far. What do you mean by 'anchoring ideas for your super-strength', by the way? |
| #5lofgrenFeb 24, 2009 11:22:10 | What do you mean by 'anchoring ideas for your super-strength', by the way? A character with super strength isn't necessarily going to be able to pick up a car, because he needs to be able to grip it and counter balance it, but super strong guys seem to be able to pick up and swing around objects that are much larger than they are. There's the additional problem that picking up the car wrong might just cause it to buckle and break in half, but Superman (for example) can pick up an entire island and fly it off into space, even though his only points of contact are his two hands. See here. |
| #6rakeFeb 24, 2009 11:53:31 | Don't link to TV Tropes! Nothing will ever get done here. : P No ideas, OTT? |
| #7lofgrenFeb 24, 2009 12:14:22 | I like powers like Clayface's, Iceman's, or Sandman's where the character's body is actually made of a malleable element. I like it especially when they are able to interact with that element in their environment. I think it would be fun to play that. My favorite character like this is Swamp Thing, but at this point both Alec and Tefé are pretty much the definition of "overpowered." |
| #8rakeFeb 24, 2009 12:19:38 | Like busting a fire hydrant to use the water to make large quantities of ice? Using a sandy environment to increase your mass? |
| #9lofgrenFeb 24, 2009 12:27:05 | The latter. (This is one of Iceman's powers now, too.) |
| #10rakeFeb 24, 2009 12:35:17 | Cool, cool. Anything else? Anyone else? Most interesting or awesome powers, concepts, or fighting moves you could imagine using at the table. Open forum! |
| #11doneisiFeb 24, 2009 16:20:52 | You should definitely cover the gadget, speedy, flying, lazoring and telepathic superheros. I think gravity powers are cool. Sheild\forcefield types would be nice along with animal-like powers would be cool to. |
| #12annoyinglizardvoiceFeb 25, 2009 15:03:45 | Are comedy abilities any use to you? If so, someone once did charactures of some what some friends and I would be like if we were superheroes, and we ended up with a team who that included Drunkman (with he ability to make his alcohol induced dillusions of the world become reallity, throw pint glasses with lethal accuracy and travel via "the drunken route", a rather random form of telportation that he never remembers using), the Human Gasleak (with his prehensile flatulence), the Stitch-n-witch (with her ability to knit a fully-working version of anything she could think of and get enough wool for) and the Freudian Avenger (able to use Freudian psycology to undermine the very mind of any villan). Suggested villans included the Probiotic Man (who's body was made up of friendly bacteria) and the Uber-chav (who became stronger every time his behaviour was socially unacceptable). Needless to say, alcohol was involved in the creation of these characters. |
| #13Reg06Feb 25, 2009 15:54:14 | Have you looked at Aberrant? It's White Wolf's hero game, and isn't set in the World of Darkness. This system does a pretty good job at providing a flexible power system without being terribly broken, and the core game system is easy to use. |
| #14dirtyfrankFeb 25, 2009 17:39:48 | The ability to manipulate gravity can be entertaining. Such a power could be used to distort or redirect things like sound and light. It can also be used as a weapon or shield/defense. It can also be used for things such as flight or hovering. The ability to manipulate space. This would allow for somebody to crush something by compacting space or pull something apart by spreading space out. One could also fold space and my be able to even make wormholes by doing such. On could also make a propagating wave within space to allow the spacial dimension to propel them. The only thing that can travel faster than the speed of light is space its self so if another person could make a force field to protect you and to hold in oxygen one could travel from world to world in such a manner. The ability to manipulate matter/mass. One could change the makeup of matter on a atomic level. They would be able to change one element or compound into another. The ability to manipulate energy. Everything is made up of energy plus there is energy throughout the universe in different forms. Atoms could be fussed to make energy (something that the above could do to make massive explosions) and would be able to control it. Could change temperatures of things and places by increasing and decreasing the amount of thermal energy in the system. Could make and absorb electrical energy. |
| #15fenrir7139Feb 25, 2009 18:06:11 | Depending on whether or not you'd be willing to put in more "magical" powers, an option to be able to make ink drawings come to life and fight for you would be pretty bad-ass (think Sai from Naruto). |
| #16lofgrenFeb 26, 2009 9:58:53 | There's a character in X-Men right now who has some neat powers. He can imitate anybody's powers by getting an iconic tattoo. For example, he has lightening bolts on his head to give him telepathy, because that is how Professor X's telepathy is often portrayed. He also has lines on his arms that look like Colossus' armor, which gives him super strength. I don't much care about the tattoo aspect, but power mimickery is interesting, especially if the character has to plan his powers ahead of time and go through a process to gain them, rather than the power absorption abilities of Rogue or Parasite. |
| #17dirtyfrankFeb 26, 2009 12:40:00 | The Tattoo thing is cool. It means that the character can have many super powers but they are restricted to one area only. If you want super strength with both arms then you have to get tattoos on both arms. Tattoos on legs can give super speed and a tattoo on the body can make a barrier to prevent burning up from the speed or to make your body resistant/immune to heat. Tattoos on your feet can allow for you to walk on water or you can go with being able bounce/jump really far. One can always get tattoos removed and new ones applied. It also requires for for someone to plan ahead. I don't think this person's super powers would be super powerful but with dozens of power combos it can become quite powerful. |
| #18rakeFeb 26, 2009 12:55:08 | Now that is interesting. |
| #19lofgrenFeb 26, 2009 13:15:39 | Actually, the character in the comics got the Phoenix symbol tattooed over his eye… so now he is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe (if he could just figure out how to use the damn thing). Unfortunately, the effort put his tattoo artist into a coma, so there will be no more power creep for him. As if he needed any more. |
| #20rakeFeb 26, 2009 13:29:54 | Why the hell is this a mutant ability as opposed to a magical one, though? Seems to have no interpretation as the kind of 'evolutionary-jump' type of powers mutants are supposed to inheret. What's the character's name? |
| #21lofgrenFeb 26, 2009 14:02:22 | Why the hell is this a mutant ability as opposed to a magical one, though? Seems to have no interpretation as the kind of 'evolutionary-jump' type of powers mutants are supposed to inheret. Ink. It's not like mutant abilities have ever made a whole lot of sense as "evolutionary jumps." The mutant ability is the tattoo artist's ability to imbue his art with power. Ink is just a human with lots of tattoos from that guy. |
| #22dirtyfrankFeb 26, 2009 14:06:49 | Ink. So the artist is the mutant and the guy with the tattoos is just a lucky guy. That sounds cool. I like to play characters that can make things and that stays out of the lime light. |
| #23Alter_BoyFeb 26, 2009 22:43:27 | Manipulators of the Five Senses. Sight and sound are obvious ones (illusion magic anyone?), but what about the other three senses? Touch: you feel no pain. You get hurt, but you aren't slowed down mentally by it. Also, you can induce increased sensitivity in others or remove it altogether. Kill someone with an ice cream headache, or make them unable to feel the ground underneath their feet. Smell and Taste: The ability to overwhelm someone olfactory system is powerful. More interesting is the ability to create wish-smells and wish-tastes: an universal sensation that the recipient believes is whatever it treasures most. It will be exactly the right flavour or aroma, and will be hard to resist. An alcoholic will binge himself into unconsciousness on tap water (or draino ) and a heartless assassin will smell his mother's apple pie and take a bite of an obviously poisoned pastry. |
| #24arderkragFeb 26, 2009 23:27:39 | Presently, I'm elbow-deep in my pet project... an answer to Mutants & Masterminds or the HERO System. A supers game that isn't a nightmare to learn (HERO) or an excercise in game-breaking (M&M). I personally found M&M to be fabulous. Might just be me, though. |
| #25jasonorlandohawkFeb 27, 2009 0:38:07 | Personally, I am fascinated by athletic powers (super jumping, extreme endurance capabilities, etc...). Think "origin of the term marathon" level stuff. Unless I'm playing a caster in D&D, I am not satisfied w/ a character who can't clear a jump of 30 feet or more (and you know how casters respond to those situations). Diplomatic powers are always cool. I like the idea of a character who can't fight (at least not on a 'super' level), but who can talk down just about anyone. Healing powers are fascinating, although I prefer "can heal others" to "I heal from anything." The ability to turn off other's powers is also VERY nice, in my mind. The Haitian from the show Heroes is one of my favorite characters, and he's not much more effective than a standard human. Last, but definitely not least... "Recall" abilities are flat out amazing. The ability to perfectly remember what you read, heard, saw, smelt, etc... absolutely fascination. I prefer the mental recall abilities to physical recall abilities. (Not really a fan of "I got hit by that attack, so now I can do it.") |
| #26rakeFeb 27, 2009 7:32:47 | Lots of good stuff, ladies and gents. Keep 'em coming if you got 'em. |
| #27minja_dupFeb 27, 2009 12:27:36 | I always liked the idea of precognition, the ability to manipulate machinery or simple suggestions. (Not to mention the power of the squirrel) I enjoy supers games tremendously, they are a lot of fun when done well, and you are in the right mood. The last character I played was an samurai sword swinging Asian school girl that could control and store pain that she inflicted on others. Emotional or physical wounds could be inflicted sans pain, and she could store them up like a battery, and release it at any time. This made for some awesome RP. |
| #28rakeFeb 27, 2009 12:29:56 | I always liked the idea of precognition, the ability to manipulate machinery or simple suggestions. (Not to mention the power of the squirrel) May I ask what you typically play? I'll guess M&M, since you're a fellow 3.5er. |
| #29minja_dupFeb 27, 2009 12:44:31 | M&M. But the game that I played with the character described above was actually a GURPS Supers campaign, about 2 years ago. |
| #30rakeFeb 27, 2009 13:13:01 | the character described above was actually a GURPS Supers campaign, about 2 years ago. actually a GURPS Supers campaign, about 2 years ago. a GURPS Supers campaign GURPS campaign GURPS ![]() |
| #31minja_dupFeb 27, 2009 13:20:48 | What? I didn't run it, but I was invited and we played and had a great time. The system wasn't the greatest but it worked. |
