| #1darkphoenix2010Jul 20, 2010 22:56:03 | Hi, I was wondering if there has ever been an effort to bring the board game to the PC. Let's say i'm in the mood for some REAL role playing and I wanna play D&D but not just another PC video game. I want to have to draw maps, I want dice I want multiplayer on the same PC with folks using the same keyboard by sharing it, or over a lan, or with the computer being other players for when i don't yhave any friends to play with. You get my meaning here? Has there ever been an effort to transfer the board game to the PC in this manner? If not D&D, what about clones? Any that I can play single player? I think such a game would be a Big Hit and folks would love it. |

| #3darkphoenix2010Jul 20, 2010 23:39:53 | I know it's not a board game but back when I was a kid back in the late 70's I used to play it and we always had the table covered with books, modules, graph paper dice etc.. so thats why it conjures up images of a likeness to a board game. I sure hope someone out there know of a game like this. Perhaps a clone? |

Hotseat sounds like an excercise in futility since you might as well just play actual D&D on a table. Singleplayer D&D exists in the form of games like Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate, or even the MMO game D&D Online: Stormreach. Running an actual game of D&D vs a computer isn't possible, AI simply isn't capable of thinking like a human being (yet, anyway) so it could never behave like an actual DM, PC or NPC. |

I've never tried it myself, but from what I've read the DM can intervene at any time during playing. He can take on the role of any of the NPC's, adjust monsters or terrain on the fly, etc... There are a lot of actions that you can do in real D&D that you can't do in the neverwinter nights game, because the programmers simply can't program the math and graphics of every possible action a character can take. However, through the aforementioned DM intervention some of those things might be covered. For example: I assume if a player wants to jump, climb, dig, swim,... (things the engine don't allow) the dm can have that player roll a die and on succes move the PC to the spot he was trying to get to. Custom campaigns ran by a DM is what Neverwinter Nights was actually made for. |

I do not play online multiplayer games. Instead of books and modules and real dice, all over the table, why can't someone sell packages to have these things on the PC.. one terminal with all the info in front of you. This would be great for laptops.. I bet it could be done. |

We actually use it for our 4e D&D games, everyone comes over and we put it up on a big TV, put the mouse on the table in the middle, and the DM get's a laptop as a dm screen. It probably won't work as well on one single computer, but it should still work. The only thing it's really missing is voice chat, but you can pick up another program for that. (like ventrillo). |
