I just watched MTV, E! and VH1, for the first time. Dear God, western civilization is on the decline.

See, I don't watch those channels so I can live in blissful ignorance. But I'm preparing the weapons. So that way, when the day comes for Western Civilization to die, it will not die quietly. IT WILL GO OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY!!!

Seriously, don't watch those channels unless you want your brain to melt.

I had never watched them before. I grew up in a house where those channels were forbidden (I don't think E! was around anyways at that time). People have told me about them, but I didn't they believe they were that bad. I just watched something called the Tool Academy on MTV. OH MY GOD. I just can't believe people are watching this stuff, and that these guys actually exist.

I'm not surprised. There are always idiots that will watch anything. E and MTV suck. Dunno about VH1, but I'm staying away from it.

The virus is spreading. Here in Italy we have only E! and MTV no VH1 (thanks God if it's similar to the other two). The only thing I watch on them is the "Anime Night" on Tuesdays on MTV and avoid all the rest.

On the other hand, America just elected a black president, many popular TV shows are smart and interesting, and children are going crazy over interesting literature with real themes and complexity (looking at you, Harry Potter!).

Western civilization has some life in it still, I think.

I just watched something called the Tool Academy on MTV.

It's on VH1. Right after Rock Bus of Loooooove.

It's pretty much the only TV my wife and I sit down and watch together. We like cringing, what can I say.

It's not the end!

It's just an outlet for Stupid on tv.

Besides I've been saying this ever since the debut of the Real World.

Now what you should be saying this over is the current season of Battlestar Galactica.

They've done -nothing- so far to really wrap up the old loose ends, and instead are introducing more loose ends?

My bad. I watched clips of the Rock Bus of Love on youtube. This is unbelievable. I can't believe that guy is making so much money for spreading STDs.

It's not exactly the prime cuts of humanity on display, is it?

I can't even remember how we got started watching them, but now it's become a Sunday night ritual. I personally enjoy Tool Academy more than the Rock Bus stuff, as it seems to have some redeeming factors outside of "Boobies Bret Michael Gets His Boobies Freak On Boobies Boobies Boobies." It's actually pretty entertaining, and has sparked some fun conversation on our end about what exactly the inside of a 20-25 year old male's head really looks like.

All I know is that we have words in the English language for people like Bret Michaels, that I cannot use here.

It's a stupid show about stupid people, sure (and one I'd never watch), but we must keep in mind that we're talking about a washed-up has-been rocker that probably knows nothing else. And a cable netwrok is paying him to pick and choose between big breasted groupies. Devoted followers waiting to shed their clothes and prove their love for the guy. He's getting paid to get laid. He'd be stupid to say no, IMO. It's got far less to do with the man than it has to do with the people that watch him. He's only doing what comes natural to him and what makes sense for his current position in life. Ya' can't fault a man for that.

Guys that think being the prize AND judge in a game that features as contestants a lot of vamped up promiscuous women and getting paid for it is a fun way to spend a couple of months? Those aren't exactly rare. ;)

Not that there's really anyone on that show that I would find attractive in the least one on one, but seriously. The motivations are pretty transparent, and if they had a casting call to play Brett's part they would probably have to hold them in a stadium somewhere. :P

I don't fault him for getting pretty women, or even using a TV program to work his way through a throng of them. He is a man, and I have to wonder if I would be any different than him if given a show like Rock Bus of Love. What bothers me is his whole demeanor on the show, and his apparent lack of any depth. Just something about him, and it begins with a D.

Ten more years and television will have been amalgamated into the internet. Sadly, the content won't improve. There will always be a market for "mindless entertainment."

But YOU, mister OP, you will always have us.

Wait.... western civilization started at some point?

Back during the ancient days when Greece was a collection of city states and the Roman Empire was the most powerful force on the planet, there was western civilization.....then the collapse came. Then there might have been a second start of it at some point, but scholars disagree on the start point, end point, and if it ever actually occured. :D

That's not a sign that American civilization is on a decline, the fact that no one gets involved in the political process, our economy (which I might add, was proven to be unstable back during the Reagan administration and no one bothered to do more than a patch-fix, and the last one didn't even attempt to correct anything), our irresponsible treatment of our natural resources, I could go on.

Entertainment? Rome had far more messed up entertainment and they were stron for thousands of years. (Despite common knowledge, Rome had been a pretty hardcore Christian nation for centuries before they fell.)

This stuff is the reason why I stopped watching TV a long time ago. Cinemas + DVDs + books + going out provide me with all the entertainment I need.

For news, I have news on the web + newspapers.

So, why bother with TV? The entertainment I select - based on reviews and recommendations - will always be better than TV, web will always give me faster news, newspapers will always cover things more in-depth than TV.

Cheers, LT.

See, I live in the awesome part of the West (the EASTERN part in fact), and the only bad thing we notice is MTV, and that is only stuff from the Americas right there.

And I guess that is why so many an American I have met has told me they would like to go on a trip to Europe.

i watched mtv the very few times i could back in the mid 90s (didn't have cable, had to see it at other people's houses) when they were running beavis and butthead =) it was stupid entertainment but it was good stuff (the movie rocks).

These days I have avoided it completely. my sis will watch mtv for the stupid shows so she can actually just criticize how idiotic the kids in these shows are. She watches mtv to troll and flame XD

vh1 i find much more bearable... or at least used it... a lot of dating celebrity shows i can no longer stand...

Except those girls on brett michaels show... yes i know 99.99% of them are stupid and permiscuous but still good eye candy <3

mtv is a really hollow shell of what it used to be, i avoid it like the PLAGUE.

Don't watch E! though, no particular reason.

Now, see, its stuff like that that makes me less fond of Ghandi. Being at war with someone (or resisting occupation by them) does not justify the condemnation of their entire history and civilization, especially using terms that apply to other countries besides the one you've been pitted against ("western" as opposed to "british").

Not to mention that Gandhi went to law school in England. Hypocrite.

I don't think you're required to call people who commit mass murder on your population 'civilised'. At least he only fought with words, no matter how unflattering they might be. But I'm not looking to start a political conversation here, I just got reminded of the quote by the title.

Gandhi was a hypocrite on a lot of levels. How about his teachings on celibacy and his totally (and might I say awesome) sex scandals.

EDIT: but, you know, he still did a lot of good things. I'd like to think he went to... someone's heaven.

All you weiners say it time and time again, "man is bad." Can I advance a theory to you? Man isn't bad, government is.

Untrue. Individual humans can be douchebags. A government is a collective of douchebags acting in unison. Breaking it down to the individual level reduces the scale, but not the douchebaggery.

People can do cruel things, yes, but over all the vast majority of people will do the right thing. Not so when an authority demands wrongness.

Nothing has changed. We're basically the same species that worshipped the sun and ate human flesh as a form of worship. We're silly little monkey people and we need to realize that we're never going to be *that* important. Even all this hooplaw about the environment being threatened because of us. "Oh no, we're killing the planet."

No. We're killing ourselves. The planet will continue on long after we're too dead to keep it up.

It's called bystander apathy. Get used to it. We just let it happen.

Speak for yourself. I know I'm not a unique, perfect snowflake and all that jazz, but I cannot adopt this kind of nihilism. It's self-defeatist IMO. Humility is a virtue and all, but life is too complex for me to sum up so candidly like that. And besides, I only eat the heart.;)

We're silly little monkey people and we need to realize that we're never going to be *that* important.

And by "that" you mean...?
I know, chronologically, blip on the screen, but we've gotten off-world, discovered amazing things, built immense wonders, unwrapped some serious mysteries of the universe, and can cook a whole turkey in under a day.

Even all this hooplaw about the environment being threatened because of us. "Oh no, we're killing the planet."

Yes, likely a pandemic or another ice age will tidy up our mess (us). Earth moves in phases and a world is a different world every 5k years, especially when you're dealing in he billions and all. This is not to say we haven't had a hand in it though.

No. We're killing ourselves. The planet will continue on long after we're too dead to keep it up.

That's why I'm pushing for controlled undeath. Require marginal resources, more environmentally friendly, and able to withstand the test of time.

Your right, life is too complicated to sum up like that. I think we've reached a difference of views that will ultimately be one of the many that ravage our planet in a bizzare philosophical war of minds.
