It sucks. They let the credit card companies get away with murder in the US. We should arrest them all.

Well, I'm just glad I never had any invested money, and that I had insta-access to my accounts. I pulled all my money out, and I keep it in a smaller firm for the moment. Even though, I'm still making peas and can likewise barely even afford to buy peas! Stupid everything.

Pfft. That's small-time. What I'M gonna do to those ****ers is I'm gonna tie them up, and place grenades on them in such a way that if they move an INCH, they'll pull a pin and blow themselves up. It has a mental effect on them before they die, instead of just eviscerating or decapitating them or whatever it is that you planned.

To the OP: Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, it's a story that's becoming far too common nowadays. I hope you manage to get another job soon so you can pay your debts and living expenses. Just don't give in to despair, because you'll wind up in a pit that you can't climb out of then.

You're in good company, mate. I was one paycheck short of recovering completely from the 2008 flood when I got laid off* last week. I guess that big ol' luxury car of mine will make an excellent home now that I'm going to have to turn gypsy.

I guess the upside is that playing D&D doesn't cost too much money and my library will fit into the trunk of my car. So we'll have something to do when we aren't scrounging for food.

*I had to leave a job I was at for 13 years because the flood tanked the local economy and then the national and international economy went down the swirling road. No loss, really. I was looking for a job when I got that one.

I still have my job (technically) but I can identify.

I'm a self-employed building contractor and had a work accident back in October. I that someone else was nailing ricochet back and catch me in the eye while I had my safety glasses off (which was stupid but :/).

Anyway, I have had 3 surgeries(1 to repair the cornea, 1 to replace the shattered lens, and one to clear all the blood out of the ocular fluid) on it, and am probably going to have to have another(to remove a scar from my macula).

Anyway the fun started when I obviously couldn't work. The only good thing is, I had no insurance, but not working got me on Amerigroup(poor people insurance in the US), and that paid for it. But then in December from attempting to actually do some catching up on my lagging bills I apparently made to much to keep it. (and hell, doing work when I wasn't even supposed to be medically)

And they didn't tell me that I was turned inactive. So I have five months of doctors visits that weren't covered that I was unaware of until yesterday... my bills have been behind because even after recovering, no one is wanting work on their house in this economy.

Needless to say. NO fun.

The good thing is I've never had a credit card in my entire life, my car is paid off. So all I owe are rent, car insurance, and utilities. But even then it piles up fast with no work.

Hang in there :D

United States Army...go there, join up... paycheck, food, home, medical...cant beat it...

Then you have a real medical condition. Caused by being deployed. The doctors say you shouldn't be sent back over. You get deployed two more times while the doctors keep trying to get you a medical discharge.

The people over you act like you are FAKING a seizure. Despite medical proof that its involuntary movement.

Yeah, the Army is so freaking great.

(this is what happened to my brother)

Basically, yes, if you have the right mindset, and are healthy, its fine. Doing it just for the money though is stupid.

It is impossible to navigate the US economy without one. Pricing assumes major purchases are bought on credit.

Though now that this has happened to me. I will not be using credit cards ever again. But that means I will live a life closer to my grandparents than my parents.

I got divorced 6 years ago. I havent had a credtit card sense. It is actually rather refreshing. However it seems to make it harder to prove you have credit and buy a house. Which sucks.

To the OP: I understand your pain. I work consrtuction, and the company I was working for last year lost a contract the first week of december. I just got picked up by another company 10 days ago. Does your area have a group of building trades unions? If you can get in they pay for all of your training and pay very well. Im currently a 4th year apprentice and make over 26 pr hour gross on the check, and my benifits package is almost as much.

Actually I wish I knew a trade now. I worked in marketing. Can't find work anywhere now. There just aren't enough jobs, and when there is one, there are people with more impressive resume's than me applying. I have recieved no responses to any of the resumes I sent out. I have gone in in person hundreds of times, and been told to apply online (no one seems to want to deal face to face anymore). Now I am resorting to applying for retail work, and I can't even get a job in that sector. In fact I had one interview for such a position last month, and was rejected.

So.. just to be an insensitive bastard, if you just lost your job, do you really think browsing a hobby related forum is the best use of your time? Shouldn't you be looking at some sort of job bank, or at the very least, craigslist, kijiji, backpage or some other service that has a plethora of job postings.

I'm sorry you lost your job and all, and I don't know all the details, but no one forces anyone to use a credit card. Well, maybe at gunpoint, if your being robbed, but that is extenuating circumstances. If you spend money on things you don't need or are beyond your income, then that is the true problem.

Believe me.. I know how hard it is to find a job everywhere right now. Try being an actor... sheesh is that tough. But, you do what you have to do to survive. Me, I searched long and hard to get two part time jobs that I can't stand, and I constantly send out my headshot for acting gigs, and go to auditions. It's tough, it sucks, and I'm depressed a fair bit, but that is life. I just suck it up, and push onwards.

Now, I'm sure to get flamed for not being one of the 'oh, I'm so sorry, but things will get better' type of posters, but I've found that most people in life blame all their problems on others, rather than admit that they are the ones that screwed things up.

That is what I do with 80% of my day. But you need to blow off steam and socialize once in a while. It is also good, because you need to keep your brain stimulated. The worst thing to do when you lose a job, is start getting up later, and staying away from things that entertain you. This weekend is special, because it is a holiday. So I am staying with family and posting more than normal. Trust me I am on craigslist, indeed, monster, USA Jobs, the whole lot. And I apply to everything I am qualified to do. But no one has bitten yet. Also been going into offices to speak with human resources people.

But without monlthy income I missed payments and my interest rates shot up past 29%, and I was hit with fees. I lived my whole life always taking responsibility for my own actions. My father was a randian. So you can imagine, I don't normally put the blame on others. In this case, with the economy like it is, and credit card companies operating the way they do now (remember much of what they are doing now was illegal a decade ago), I think some of my problems are made worse by an unethical (not illegal) financial system and a really bad economy. At a certain point, there just isn't work out there. Which sucks, because I have never had to live off others.

Dude, you're in Hamilton... like me. The well is drying up here. Doesn't matter what your occupation is. I commute to Oakville every day, and my wife does temp work in Grimsby or Stoney Creek most days. There just ain't much work in this area.

That's not to suggest you don't look for work anywhere, I'm sure you do... I'm just saying that if your location is accurate, I can understand part of the problem.

Still, good luck. Hope you find something.

Well that is good. Unfortunately, I've seen far too many people that don't do anything about their situation. Hell, I've been guilty of it as well.

But I could afford them till I lost my job. And you honestly need credit cards to do anything these days. We were living within our means, like everyone else. But without monlthy income I missed payments and my interest rates shot up past 29%, and I was hit with fees. I am a smart guy, but those terms and conditions are difficult to understand, in fact they are deliberately hard to understand, and I didn't realize this could happen.

I do disagree with you. You do not NEED a credit card. It is my personal belief that if you use a credit card and carry a balance on it for more than a week, you are living beyond your means. Trust me, I am doing that myself right now. Just scraping by (making payments) isn't living within your means. Now, if you could make the payments even without a job, then you would be living within your means. Once again, this is my belief, as I don't consider credit cards as being a necessity of life, but a way for banks to make extra money. People get carried away with credit cards, and that is what the banks prey on. Blaming credit cards for making you in debt is like blaming McDonalds for making you fat. It absolves any personal responsibility for your actions, and puts blame on someone else so you can hate them rather than hate your self for getting into that situation.

I actually considered getting into acting, because for some reason, there are a lot of acting jobs here all of a sudden. But I think I may not have the mug for it.

Neither does Ron Perlman (the guy who played Hellboy), but he in the early nineties, I do believe, played a lead romantic role - albeit in makeup, on the Beauty and the Beast series with Linda Hamilton. It may be a bit sexist, but guys can get away with not being 'pretty' in Hollywood. You won't get the lead romantic role, but you may get something. Hell, look at Zach Braf from scrubs (J.D.) he's not exactly a great looking guy. The point is if you have the talent and drive you can do it. Don't listen to what other people say. Danny Devito is pretty either, and he had a great career in the 80's and 90's - I think he does more directing now and less acting. If you have a unique look, you'll go farther than looking like everyone else.

To quote Obi-Wan 'Who's more foolish the fool, or the fool who follows him?' As I've stated above, I don't believe that the credit cards are at fault. Sure they are doing something that is, to you, unethical. But they provide a service not a necessity. The economy sucking does hurt a lot of people, but there are still lots of people with jobs. You should find out what they are doing right, and what you are doing wrong. There is always work - it may not be work that you like, but there is always work. Pride is one of the greatest sins - though some times it will keep you from doing what you have to, say taking a job as a janitor for minimum wage, it can also inspire you to 'go beyond reason and do the impossible' to quote Kamina from Gurren Lagann. Swallow the pride, look for a job doing anything, no matter how humiliating you may think it is. It is a job. It gives you the means to live, survival is the first and foremost drive of any animal, and humans ARE animals. A wolf will chew it's own leg off to escape a trap, humans have that capacity as will. It is in our psyche.

Man, give the guy a break. He is in dire enough straits as it is, and is here to blow off some steam, not to get a lecture about his spending habits. Plus, he is already in debt, so it seems a little redundant to be chastising him over something that has already happened (it is not as though your lecture could absolve him of his debt).

Just remember that your union is most likely set up like SMW 162 in Sacramento, in most regards. They will help you get another job quickly. Especially being a apprentice, contractors like having good but less expensive workers for their projects.

I'm non-union. Even if I'm layed off, its a state-run apprenticeship and the school will help me find another job.

And, yes, its likely I still have my job because I make probably half as much as an experienced journeyman. The money is in the labor.

Gogo random luck power?

Quit hogging it, mate. The rest of the country needs a spot of that.

On a related note, I found myself another patch of dirt to attend to today. A friend called and he wants his garden worked but doesn't want to do it himself. It brings me up to about three quarters of an acre of arable land that I'll be farming over the summer.

With what people are paying for organic foods, I'll be looking at a pretty penny come fall. And if I work the rotation right, I'll be having dinner with a different friend every night on a two-week schedule. It's not paying work, but it'll keep me fed and in the fall I'll have a good harvest to sell. Next year I find someone that wants to raise animals.

Depends on the government and the promises they made. If the government is a true communist (technically a "Marxist" but we'll not get caught up in silly language) government, it is their job to make everyone equal, because that's what they stand for.

It's not a capitalists governments job to make everyone equal.

Reply self-edited to prevent thread closure.

I had to edit mine because of the likelihood that it would venture too far into politics to make my point and Webster is extremely quick to close threads that even mention anything political.

Sadly, there is a definite line between political socialism and economic socialism that isn't taught in our schools. We in the United States live in a controlled-market, democratic, socialist republic.

If you want to remove the socialist part of our government, you'll have to dig very deep to cut it out. Start with Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance and minimum wages. After that, let's start taking away things like speed limits, highways and superhighways, public schools, and the laws protecting consumers. Don't forget the USDA, that part of the government that ensures that the food you eat is safe for human consumption is a part of the socialism that needs to be cut away.

I could go on, but I'm sure I've already pushed beyond the envelope that the VCLs will accept.

I don't want to pry, but why couldn't you draw unemployment?

I worked for 13 years as a cab driver but that went wahooni-shaped when the flood ate this city last June. The rules for collecting unemployment are different for self-employed people here in Iowa, so technically I can draw it, but I don't have any money to draw from. Since the last fiscal quarter was the only quarter that qualified for unemployment (regular job), my claim was approved but there's no money to draw off of. According to their calculations, I can draw unemployment benefits starting at the beginning of the next quarter.

It would probably be ethically/morally wrong to be drunk in that situation. There's liberals, conservatives, and undecided. Then there's left wing nutjobs, right wing extremists, and anarchists. The first set isn't so bad. The second, different story.

You know, there are quite a few of us so-called liberals that are quite conservative. We value the continuation of the republic and our personal liberties over anything else. But at times, action has to be taken, no matter how drastic to ensure the prosperity of the whole, rather than just a portion of the republic. As long as those actions don't infringe on the articles set forth in the Bill of Rights, then so be it.

And before my patriotism is questioned, I am a veteran. As was my father before me. And his father before him.

If decent, human charity was practiced, most of the legislative measures to help the less fortunate wouldn't be needed. If people here were more concerned for their fellow man's well-being, there wouldn't be a need for government intervention. Government entitlements are a result of the lack of compassion that has wormed it's way into our societies. The next time someone complains about entitlements, ask them what they've done to teach the virtues that would make them unnecessary.
