Im just wondering how this is done my group is rebuilding a party to sort of pick up from where the corpses of our last party ended and we are wondering gear wise does that button fill out characters appropriately with gear suitable to the level you are building them for. For example in this case im starting lvl 4 as a paladin and its giving me a flaming longsword +1, black iron plate armor +1 and a brooch of no regrets +1 on top of the standard level 1 gear

Sorry if really noob question were are justing starting out and i apologise if its the wrong forum section but i didnt see any other suitable

Thank you for any replies in advance

Totally wrong forum, this is the Off-Topic Tavern, we're not even allowed to talk about D&D in here. What you want is the DDI forums located here

But yeah the add gear button pretty much sucks, it really doesnt give you standard items that your character would have like rope, torches and stuff like that, and it seems pretty random, alot of time its given my character items that were pretty much useless to him/her because of class or whatever, so I tend not to even use it. But if youre using it to generate random magic items it works ok for that, and it does seem to be pretty much level based, so there is that.

No problem, It is sort of confusing for those new to the forums, it doesnt help that theyre all the time rearanging everything too!

And Im a bit of a rebel so I dont mind talking about 4e, or D&D, thats a bit of joke cause theres a few around here who seem to think that 4e isnt D&D, but it says right on the cover "Dungeons & Dragons"!!!!

Portal 4, really? I ussually hear that its WoW table top, which I dont understand cause WoW seems pretty much like D&D: the video game, but whatever, Haters gonna Hate.

i think in any series if you change anything you are going to have people rage over it. Im too new to really comment on D&D but it seems like a recurring theme in gaming

Not really. FR was rich & vibrant until 4E. Eberron got all funky after 4E (Eladrin show up & go "We killed Cyre! We're all friends now, right?"), and Dragonlance doesn't even exist anymore (no official campaign support in 3e, and they didn't even bother with a facade that they care in 4e). WotC screwed their fan base with 4e; some of us just refused to bend over for it.

yeah some of those updates were dumb, I mean I do think Magic Missle should be auto hit, but just giving it a set damage is dumb, thats all the wizard does in our group, magic missle, magic missle, cant say I really blame him though, why would you do something else when its quite possible that you would miss, and even if you hit, you might not do more than 7 damage, so guarantied 7 damage, yeah id take that too.

Say wha!? Each different class have entirely differnt sets of powers, Rogues powers focus on hitting quick and hard, Fighers do alot of marking and defending allies, Rangers focus on two weapon attacks and archery, Clerics get healing, and the list goes on, but yes there is some overlap, and some of the powers do mirror others from the other classes, but you have enough choices that you can easily make a character who stands out, and is different that anyone else, you can focus on one particular style or branch out and be a jack o' all trades or whatever, the possibilities are endless!!

The 4E motto is "re-skin." They took a base model class with all the same powers and just renamed (re-skinned) the powers depending on the class. That's why all the classes are "balanced." They're all the same boring class.

If you say so, but I really think theres some variety there, some classes are better at some stuff that others, just like in any edition.

I actually like 4e from a game design standpoint and I think that at least the books I have (up to PHB2 and Forgotten Realms) seem balanced enough. But, I do prefer 3.5e.

4e is a better game: classes are balanced better and combat is more tactical.
3.5e is a better story: classes feel vastly different and you can do practically anything.

It began in our town, in our neighborhoods, with the players as "themselves" albeit in an alternate universe/ whatever.
Played Palladium games for a while (Ninjas & Superspies/ Heroes Unlimited/ TMNT/ Rifts), but those have their own issues. Played RoleMaster and HARP for a while, but then lost the RPG bug entirely.
