| #1pigknightJun 24, 2008 19:45:48 | We all know about Larpers (Live action roleplayers), we make fun of them and mock them, we've even made a modivational poster about them. I will admit that I have made fun of Larpers (a lot), but I would be lying if I said I didn't want to try it. |
| #2farmer42_dupJun 24, 2008 22:07:25 | It's fun, depending on what you get into. Dagorhir and it's ilk are my favorites, since they really just focus on hitting things with foam covered sticks (not as fun as hitting things with ratan, but still fun, nonetheless.) LARP WoD tends to be lots of fun, as well. It's very much a pure distillation of roleplaying when you get a good group going. |
| #3pigknightJun 24, 2008 22:22:08 | I'm making my own Larping rules and since I'm going to a Christian school I could probably easily get people to roleplay. Remeber kids: Crazy Christian parents that are brainwashed into thinking roleplayers are evil + teenagers that automatically rebel against their parents = large amount of roleplayers. It's very much a pure distillation of roleplaying when you get a good group going. So it's role-shine . |
| #4farmer42_dupJun 24, 2008 22:25:25 | Nah. Role-shine is the jar of moon I have for when a session goes downhill. This is more like roll-vodka. Cultured and proceesed. |
| #5meadJun 24, 2008 23:17:47 | If Dark ConFrontation is still being run at DragonCon, you should check it out. It was non-contact back when it first appeared (1992?), but there were some weekend events where people would bring foam weapons and have out-of-game tourneys. Item card and coin flip based system, it was a lot of fun back in the day. |
| #6psyguardJun 25, 2008 1:53:43 | Tried it once didn't enjoy it. Basically if you weren't a close friend of the people running it your job was to stand around and watch the "Core Group" of players be cool. When I play a game I'd like to play not hang around and be window dressing for someone else's fun. |
| #7LineovJun 25, 2008 2:24:23 | I'm making my own Larping rules and since I'm going to a Christian school I could probably easily get people to roleplay. Someone said this once but i don't remember who... "Don't dabble in the occoult, you might end up with those Role-players!" |
| #8purple_monkfishJun 25, 2008 2:59:35 | heyyyyy there aint nothing wrong with larp, it's enteretaining. Ok, I think i'd be too amused and feel too silly to do actual fantasy larp but i've done Vampire: the masquerade (which actually works better as a larp) and a very odd homebrew where one guy was in a gorilla suit.. to this day, none of the players have any idea what the heck was going on hahaha. |
| #9farmer42_dupJun 25, 2008 3:11:00 | Nero can be really fun, as well, but you have to walk a very thin line with it. it can end up being too much of the Live and not enough of the Role Playing. Sometimes, you'll get sadistic groups where the rogue player has to be able to pick locks so that the character can. I'll take this time to remind people that in some states, even having lockpicks is a crime. not that I know how to make them or anything... |
| #10quithrillJun 25, 2008 7:57:47 | Like any other RPG, whether or not you like it depends on who's running it. Some of the larps being run out of the Atlanta area are incredibly fun. |
| #11AndronJun 25, 2008 11:50:37 | I played NERO for a few years, then helped a friend run a chapter for years. It was fun, but I had more fun creating plots and running the weekends than playing crunchies. I was RP heavy, though, and so the owner had to concentrate on the combat side, which he liked anyway. Now I run Cthulhu Live which is a lot of fun. I tried WoD a few times, but every time it became a Reservoir Dogs scenario and i got tired of that. Just remember this: If you are standing in a pen and paper game, you are LARPing! |
| #12xhereticxJun 25, 2008 12:28:42 | I've larped before. It was fun killing imaginary creatures with foam swords and using root beer for a tavern scene. Plus I could kind of just ignore the rules and pretend not to die. |
| #13jkob88Jun 25, 2008 12:34:50 | The only larping i do is in bed. Lois: Oooo, I've been a naughty school girl, I need a spanking. Peter: i'm a level 11 paladin with 19 charisma, I can use my helm of disintegration to do 1d4 damage as my half-elf mage wields his +5 holy avenger. |
| #14xhereticxJun 25, 2008 13:26:59 | The only larping i do is in bed. Yeah, I do that too.:D |
| #15annoyinglizardvoiceJun 25, 2008 15:18:13 | LARP never held a great amount of appeal for me, but then a mate of mine managed to encourage me to attend a weekend of a LARP game called "Waypoint" (basically Firefly/Serenity with a few aliens added). Had a great time. I wasn't one of the "core players", but I still manged to have an impact on the storyline, get involved in a few cool combat encounters and do a lot of rping (and disembowl my best mate!). I think the important thing is playing with the right people. The powergamers, min/maxers and rules lawyers all seem worse in LARP than they do in normal rpgs, but the genuinely cool players seem so much cooler. |
| #16tigervirgoJun 26, 2008 0:53:39 | OMG, I have LARP'd a battle game & found many things wrong with it. Lets just say; unless you're young, energetic, experienced in hand-to-hand sword/dagger combat or able to throw balls of cloth far, & willing to debate whether someone was actually hit or not, then LARP'ing is for you. I, myself, am not the energized, capable of sword/dagger fighting, pitch cloth balls like spells, nor tolerate the arguments of people regarding physical attacks. "I hit you." "No, you didn't. You missed!" "Mom... Billy is not playing fair!" LMAO The reason why I personally love RPGs is, not only because of certain physical limitations & lack of weapon abilities I pathetically pocess, but the imagination of battling as a "Barbarian" without physically fighting like a "Barbarian". The only way I will LARP is to illustrate, within an RPG, what the character will be doing or attempting to do when I roll the dice. Dice rolling offers more dramatic flare & luck to the game, and doesn't physically exhaust you. LOL Plus, you can change many physical traits of your character; change sex, size, race. Well, the list can go on. These traits you cannot physically change of yourself as you LARP. And, when you battle in a RPG, your own personal physical limitations does not hinder you within the fantasy element of your imagination and game play. |
| #17pigknightJun 26, 2008 13:57:39 | Finally someone that disagrees with this rant . Normally it's the second post. |
| #18volund-starfireJun 26, 2008 21:01:00 | I ren and larp. I use the same armor for both. It's a homemade scale mail. Call me a geek, but it is fun. I based my scale on the picture seen in the equipment section of the 3.5 PHB. |
| #19ibunironfistJul 26, 2008 23:42:58 | I'm making my own Larping rules and since I'm going to a Christian school I could probably easily get people to roleplay. This is very true. I went to Christian school all my life. My friends and I love RP- D&D more specifically. We're all devout Christians, but we love our roleplay! We've heard the D&D/Satan stories and propaganda, but any Christian with a head on his shoulders knows that it's a bunch of crappy suspicion. I can't say I'd be too interested in LARPing, however. |
| #20Mad_JackJul 27, 2008 3:40:54 | LARPing can be fun as long as you get the right people, just like RPGs. Get the wrong people and it can be even more fun, lol. :D (At least for me, but then I'm incredibly entertained by dysfunctional people making themselves miserable by acting out their issues in-game...lol) I used to have a bunch of friends from college who were running a WoD game in a local park. Half the people were doing it for the fun of running around the park at night being goofy and pretending to be Werewolves. The other half were just looking for an excuse to start drama and do the whole vampire-angst thing - there was only one girl in the group, who was involved with one of the guys, but had previously been with one of the other guys. And guess who her favorite victim was... Yeah. I was playing a human Hunter, and decided to mess with people so (because only a couple people knew I'd joined the game) I pretended to be a drunk, wandering around the park looking for my dog. I walked up to her and and said, in a wonderfully annoying drunk voice, "Hey, hey lady, have you seen my doggie??" She says, "Wtf are you talking about?" So I point over her shoulder and say, "Oh, there's my doggie!" She turns around and almost wets herself because her werewolf player ex is standing behind her with two friends. She died. :D Another time I saw her "feeding" (read: making out) on her ex, so I walked over and tapped her lightly on the head with a stick. She looks up in annoyance, and says, "Yes?" I jacked the slide on my stick and replied, "Boom." She was unamused. I still smile when I tell that story. :D Seriously, though... I've hung out on the fringes of the Ren crowd, the SCA crowd, and the LARPers for years... Like most kids, I started running around with a yellow whiffle ball bat slaying dragons and couch cushions when I was barely old enough to walk. I never really stopped, since my brother and I have always been swords-n-sorcery fans - we just went from beating on the couch to beating on each other as we got older. I got into theatre in high school, and started hanging out with people who did the SCA and LARPing when I was in college - A friend and I went to an SCA meeting at our college, and ended up learning to play M:tG, lol. I've always seen LARPing, as well as my other hobby, Rocky Horror, as being the same thing as acting on stage - it's all just theatre... If I'd had the cash and the spare time, I'd have gotten a lot deeper into the Renfaire and LARP scenes than I did. It's great fun. |
| #21The_White_SorcererJul 27, 2008 12:34:32 | LARP WoD tends to be lots of fun, as well. Too many weird rules for my liking. No handshakes? Every item is a friggin card? |
| #22falstyrJul 27, 2008 12:42:48 | LARP is nice when it is run by the right crowd. In The Netherlands we have a few cool groups and Dragonfest in Germany is awesome. Still I prefer Re-enactment groups. Screw that pathetic foam LARP sword and take up real metal weapons. Of course you need lessons on armed combat, but when you're allowed on the battle field...there is no choreography and you might end up with some scratches and scars if you don't pay attention. No need to say: "Oi I hit you three times on that leg...you can't use it any more". Nope with Re-enactment you WILL go down ;) |
| #23cannaithJul 28, 2008 10:50:14 | Tried it once didn't enjoy it. Basically if you weren't a close friend of the people running it your job was to stand around and watch the "Core Group" of players be cool. I've noticed much the same thing. The secret is to not play their game but instead to play your own on the side and create your own plots. I played one of those games for years and I don't think I ever encountered any of the actual GM created plots, but I was definitely involved in the fun I created for myself and managed to entertain many other people with my chaos. |
| #24imthedmJul 30, 2008 16:03:58 | I've been in the DnD scene for 20 years, and have Larped twice and frankly it scared the shyt outta me! I ran into too many people who took it entirly too seriously. I mean to the point were I dont think they could tell the diference between reality and what they are Larping. Even after the session was over when we are all at the bar having a drink they wouldnt stop telling me about their in game family geneology and would refuse to actually tell me their rreal name. Takes all kinds I guess. |
| #25jimbo7987Jul 30, 2008 17:18:34 | We all know about Larpers (Live action roleplayers), we make fun of them and mock them, we've even made a modivational poster about them. I will admit that I have made fun of Larpers (a lot), but I would be lying if I said I didn't want to try it. This I got to agree with. You see I play D&D through my university Games Society, which includes Larpers. So when I tell my friends I am going to Games Society, they thing I'm one of those nutters that larps. Don't get me wrong, to each their own, but I wish the society could be split into Larping, wargaming and rpgs. |

But yeah, I wouldn't mind dressing up without feeling ridiculous or getting strange looks from the "hip" mainstream. |
| #27zombie_babiesJul 31, 2008 9:28:43 | But yeah, I wouldn't mind dressing up without feeling ridiculous or getting strange looks from the "[i]hip[/]" mainstream. Umm. I'm no larper (perish the thought!) but I'm fairly certain you're not allowed to play Vampire if you care what the hip mainstreamers think. ;) You must only conform to non-conformity! Or something .... I did larp for a time. When I was a kid. Cowboys and Indians and "Guns" were my games of choice. I had to quit when we started to get carried away. I mean, it got to the point that they wanted me to actually scalp my 2 years younger (so age 4 at the time) brother! I did it, of course, but I felt terrible afterwards. And he never shared a juice box with me again. Worth it? No way. I always wanted more Hi-C. |

| #30ranger_regAug 01, 2008 1:28:00 | I also think you aren't allowed to dress up for a Vampire LARP. You're supposed to show up naked with a card reading "Clothes." That only happens in a nudist colony. |
