It's that time of the week again, you know when I rant about something.

[rant]This week, what's up with sagging. I thought this would die a long time ago. Once, I was talking to a guy and his pants just randomly fall down. I was all like, "What the hell? Get a belt." Seriously, why do people put their pants bellow their underwear, no one wants to see their poop stained boxer shorts. [/rant]

So, what are your opinions on sagging?

I should dress based on your perceptions? If your only point against it is that it does not look good in your opinion well then myob. Not that I sag. Just saying.

I wonder how it's anyone else's business what someone wears. Unless they are wearing something that is considered a symbol of hate speech or something similar I really fail to see how it's a problem for anyone.

Pigknight is right. There is nothing natural about pants.

Fixed. There is nothing natural about clothes. At all. Now if there is and you can convince me so then you need to tell me what is unnatural about having them sag. In addition, what is unnatural about talking and gesturing "like that"? If anything it is natural as it is the natural evolution of language. Just cause you want language to stagnate and die, why hello Latin, doesn't mean it should.

What I find even funnier than the saggy pants are the guys (often the same ones) who wear basketball jerseys - only they're so oversized, they actually look a dress. IMO, their parents should be slapped for allowing them outdoors without supervision.

Yah because kids being forced to wear hand-me-downs is hilarious. Or kids not being able to afford growing out of a shirt in a year. So funny. Or the fact that maybe people don't share the same primitive taste as you. Or any of the other reasons they don't adhere to your trivial and arbitrary dress code.

IMO, their parents should be slapped for allowing them outdoors without supervision.

You know because not dressing properly warrants not only familial shame and retraining but violence as well.

You guys are so weird. I thought I'd take a look into the D&D forums and I am so scared at what I see. Really.

Here's the truth behind (pun intended) sagging pants (or droopy drawerism-LOL).

It actually started, believe it or not, in prison. Inmates would wear their pants slightly lower to reveal their boxers. This fashion statement signaled other prisoners that the wearer is "easy access" for quick, intimate affection. Now, as we all know, many inmates served minimal sentencing for their crimes & was let out. Their fashion statement continues in public to signal other free inmates about their preference as they still continued to "act tough" in public view. Much like the late 80's to early 90's when, which ear your earrings was worn, stated what sexual orientation you represented. Or, like the the gay community with the color of the handkerchief symbolized certain intimate activities.

However, as we soon discovered, many people's ignorance begun to follow what they thought was a fashion trend. This "tough look" became rampant with certain people who have never experienced prison life, let alone know what the exact meaning behind the fashion was. If you'd like to know more, ask any correctional officer or anyone working inside the penitentiaries. You'll be quite surprised on other certain "activities" that spawned from within those walls.

As for myself, I just laugh as I watch many express themselves with that certain fashion statement. However, it is sad that, if any of these "fashionable people" are in custody, they will soon discover the true meaning behind "sagging" pants.

Wow. I got a pretty different impression from reading this. No one, that I could tell, was advocating a legislative campaign to restrict the rights of the "saggers" or otherwise hinder their ability to hinder their own ability to walk (some cities actually have attempted this, however). All they're sayin' is that it looks stupid. And, IMO, they're correct. We think it's a dumb look. You think it's the bee's knees. Yay. Moving on ...

You're bloody well right, I am. Figures it's a police chief somewhere trying to outlaw it! The only thing desk-pilots like that ever chase around are administrative secretaries.

Look: I'm 41 years old, I have arthritis all over the place (too much roadwork, kickboxing, and hockey), I carry an extra 20 lbs. of equipment everywhere, and I wear heavy boots. Being in shape for my age is not going to let me keep up with a skinny 22 year old who doesn't want to do a 60-day sanction for violating his probation.

But having him trip over his own pants and scuff up his face sure as hell will.

While I think it looks completely idiotic, it isn't from prison and wasn't originally used like the handkerchief in the back pocket. Sagging comes, originally, from the many varieties of baggy clothing found in indigenous cultures of Africa. From there, it was used a signal among slaves. And later, it was appropriated by gang members in Southern California.

Sorry to steal the irony from your false origin.

As for laws against sagging? That's probably more idiotic. Indecent exposure? Really? I can't think of many communities where seeing the top of a guy's boxers could legitimately qualify as indecent exposure.

The Win sauce would be a little tastier to me if snopes.com hadn't debunked the whole prison sex thing. I go in more for the "prison-chic" theory. I think sagging is probably more about keepin' it real and representin', even when it's done by lily-white, blond-haired kids in Iowa who don't know anything about the inner city or prison life.

But some of those kids get pretty hostile if you step into the food court wearing the wrong colors, yo.

I was at a National Guard drill one weekend and I saw one of the new recruits (pre-Basic Training) with his BDU pants sagging down. I walked up and he went to something resembling parade rest. I asked if I could help him fix his uniform, while pointing a little toward my collar. The boy reached up, smoothed his collar, and said sure...

I walked around behind him, grabbed the back of his pants, and hoisted his trousers and pants (Brits will get this meaning) into an atomic wedgie that left him three feet off of the ground.

I set him back down and said that he should really tighten his bent because I was far more gentle than a drill sergeant would be.

Actually, the trend was began by the LAPD Vice. It makes it easier to hide your dope, was their line... in truth it makes it easier to catch you when you run because your pants drop and trip you, or you are off balance from holding them up. Also, with the dope in the pants, it takes a standard action to get the drugs, with adds a near heroic penalty to running... which is always beaten by the +5 vs knucklehead the police has.

First a disclaimer: I don't want someone to tell me what I can and cannot wear, and so I generally do the same for those I meet.

The only thing I can really find weird with the sagging pants is the fact that I have seen people walking, nay waddling, down the road trying in vain to keep their pantaloons up.

When a clothing style forces you to reinvent the way you naturally (you know, one foot in front of the other, non-dragging, ie: efficient evolution) walk simply to dress in that fashion, you should look at what your clothes are doing to you!

And I actually do dress for that one time that my life or the lives of others may need me to, you know, move at a faster-than-penguin-pace.

One issue. There are several social situations where ties are called for. Not to make them seem less silly, but they do have that goin' for 'em. Sagging, otoh, has no such situation. And, before it can be said, "chilin' with my homies" and "street cred" are in no way on the same level as job interviews, weddings and funerals. ;)

In prison, wearing your pants down like that mean you take it...

Personally, I do not dress as people wish me to. In the summer heat I wear kilts, in the winter cold/raid I wear a cloak.

I had one guy try to make fun of me for wearing the kilt when I asked him to stand up and prove that his form of dress was better. He was sagging. So, I asked him to squat down. He had to pull up both sides of his pants, then after squatting, had to pick up his wallet and cell phone that fell out of his pocket. I squatted down, and came back up with no problems.

I can understand some of the fashions, but others have me confused. Why you would want to dress like a few rappers (especially if you are white) or criminals is beyond me. They should skip the middleman and just buy pink jumpsuits and laceless shoes.

In polite society, it is deemed socially unacceptable to wear certain styles. See, I can wear my kilts in polite society. I have a black "dress" kilt which goes well with a good shirt. Alternatively, I have kilts for casual wear and even a shock kilt (leather). However, never in the functions which I attend have I ever seen an author or lawyer with their trousers hanging around their butt (well, I did once, but he was really drunk and just had a hookup in the copy room).

Respectable women like their men to look professional or at least respectable. If you dress like a thug, then who are you trying to impress?

I will not disrespect anyone based upon their manner of dress, however if act as the gangster you do, then treated like horse droppings you will be.

Basically, I have found that most kids and young adults who sag also try and act the part. Whether it is that weird neo-zoot suit walk to talking like they just stepped out of a rap video. Trust me, it only takes one time hearing a person describe the fairer gender as a b*tch for no reason than because they are female for me to immediately classify them as ignorant.

But hey, this is coming from a guy who still believes in the courtly graces and that a man should always hold a door open and hold a complement for those who need nothing more than to smile.

If a person is to do something for someone based on the gender of that someone ( like holding the door to women and other chivalric stuff) it's sexism.

Sexism is treating someone in a negative way. I treat people with respect. Yes, I treat women differently from men, but that is because of the way in which I was raised. Even then, I do not do so in a negative way.

I complement women on their attire. I would do so with men as well, but it is not socially acceptable except under certain circumstances (i.e. odd-ball dress, such as wearing a cloak or kilt).

I open doors for women. I do this as a sign of respect. Technically, it is what a subordinate does for their superiors in society, so is it sexist for me to treat women as such?

I make eye contact with women when we are speaking. I do not always do this for men, because the way men and women community between each other and their own gender is different. I do so because that is the way in which to best engage a member of the opposite gender.

Finally, I do what I can to get women, especially my friends, to smile if they are having a bad day. My reason is that women's emotions are better controlled than mens, so if a woman is showing her negative emotions (especially those who are emotionally mature) then she is typically is far worse straights than she appears.

That last one is not sexist, but psychologically proven. If I am sexist for these reasons, and many more which are subconscious to me, then I would prefer to be sexist as it has made me many friends even among the most stringent feminazis.

I think it looks absurd, but of course people have the right to dress as they like. Hell, I'm pro-nudity.

The thing about sagging, though, is that it is -- like all fashion -- a way of delineating oneself in line with a particular idiom. Call it 'gangsta', call it 'street', whatever; sagging pants are to 'thug' what a black turtleneck and beret are to 'artiste'. Failure to live up to this implicit claim renders one a poser.

That considered, if you're sagging so low that your boxers are showing, see someone notice said boxers, and then self-consciously tug your basketball jersey down to cover them? You are officially a sad little poser and deserve to be laughed at.

Yes, I'm talking to you, guy who was ahead of me in line at the cable company yesterday!

nope.

real "sag" lore

as for what i think of it.

HILARIOUS!! oh man, there was this one time, i was down in beverly hills, and this highschool kid was leaning in to talk at some girl driving her lil beetle and his pants were all hangin' down and stuff...he looked frikkin' rediculous! it was awesome, the girl was totally rolling her eyes at him and her friends in the back were mocking his "sag"...and all the while he thought he was the coolest cat around. what a joke...people who "sag" make total and complete cartoons of themselves...a living, walking, breathing, joke. so i laugh at them. it's hilarious. stupidest fashion trend ever...and such a puzzle to me why it hasn't completely died out...like rolling up your pants cuffs like they did on 90210? i'd imagine it's due to the fact that most of the people who still "sag" are...mmm...just too cool to know how lame they look...yeah. tools.

I'm sorry... It may be the former football player in me, but when I see a pair of boxers hanging out above pants, I get the urge to give a wedgie. :D

Seriously, though. If this is a sign of the times, I'm going to call the Doctor and go somewhen different.

Sure, you may look more like your favorite gangster rapper (who just got arrested for guns, drugs, or ended up dead at a nightclub shooting). Sure, you may look cool as you do your pimp-walk down the block (while pulling your pants up every five steps to keep them from being around your knees). Sure, you may be popular with the ladies (or whatever they are called that think that style looks cute over the guys who dress professionally and will make more than minimum wage at McDonalds when they are older). Sure, you may think you come from a long line of cool people who have worn saggy pants (either catchers in prison or those guys you see every night on Cops and Police Videos). Sure, you may be discriminated against because of the way you dress (because it looks identical to all of those guys on the previously mentioned programs).

But hey, it is your style. You are unique as you dress like every other thug in the U.S. As for me, I guess I will be uncool and dress for success. Yes, I will leave you to the job of looking cool on the street as I wear my kilt, my button-down shirt, and my low-quarters as I meet with my publisher or my professors to further my professional and educational career.

But, take heart. We will still see each other. And yes, I would like fries with that.
