Kids and Their Stinkin' Soda

When I was a kid I drank one soda a week, kids these days drink at least one soda a day. That much soda cannot be good for you. Coke/Pepsi doesn't even taste that good, yet it is the most popular brand. Seriously kids, grab a delicious glass of milk (add chocolate if you want) and drink it instead of soda which makes your teeth erode.[/rant]

This rant brought to you by Bacon Burst enchantment: coming soon to 4e.

I have a love of sweet tea (I'm from Georgia, so real sweet tea, not the iced tea with sweet'n'low that you people up north have). Unfortunately, no one in my house drinks tea. Which means we don't really have it around.

On the other hand, both me and my wife drink soda, which we do have around. I also drink fruit juices and milk. Though I will say, if I was to attempt to replace all of the soda I drink with milk, then I would die from the amount of fat in milk.

And good lord, I never realized that sweet tea is such a southern thing. Go further north that Virginia and its like no one even KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT in a restaurant.

I also like white teas, green teas, and most herbal teas. They are yum. white blueberry tea is my personal favorite.

I drink soda pop on occasion- Coke, Sprite, Barqs, Dr Pepper-, but prefer a good specialty drink from Starbucks, strong coffee, certain teas, Mead, or a well poured Guinness if you can find one.

I drank so much milk as a kid that I have calcium deposits where I don't need them.

There is a Japanese barley tea, sugarless, that I am totally addicted to, and have been since I was about 8. However, one tea bag gets an entire pitcher, and you get 50 tea bags for 3 dollars. About half the people I know, who tried it love the stuff, the other half hate it. A lot. Its either horribly hated, or loved.

Tell me about it. I grew up in Southern Indiana, which is sort of like the illegitimate child of Germany and the Deep south (I'm not joking, this is where the modern KKK started) and right now I'm up here in WI. There are days where I could kill for a glass of sweet tea, and every time someone recommends the McDonald's crap it makes it that much more unbearable.

I used to drink a lot of soda in high school... then I grew up and became adicted to exercise.

Today, I mostly drink a special blend of iced tea. Two black tea bags, two green tea bags, and two flavored tea bags (usually peace) with sage honey as a sweetener.

Once a week, when my wife and I go out for lunch after church, I have a Dr. Pepper. Once a month, when I'm out with the guys after drill weekend, I have a single beer then just Dr. Pepper. During the D&D sessions at my house, I have a single tankard of mead (small tankard, but a great prop nonetheless) then one tankard of Dr. Pepper to every two of tea. Besides that, and a glass of red wine with Sunday dinner for the health benefits, my majority drink is just the tea.

After one small experience that involved a wired Halfling Rogue, a dragon, and a twitchy dice hand... well, I will not allow Red Bull, Amp, or any of those other energy drinks into my gaming room again... it took me a week to wash the Halfling off of the table...

When soda is available I'll drink 3-4 every single day. And that's down from high school (I'm in college now), when I'd drink 2-3 energy drinks a day, and those have a lot more caffiene than soda.

Oh, wait, I forgot. Coffee. 3-4 sodas on top of 1-2 cups of coffee every day.

I've actually asked the doctor, if I go cold turkey my heart might stop. Whee!

I used to drink the equivalent of five cups of coffee a day (large cup). I went cold turkey to get back into the healthy habit and I had a severe headache for about a week (withdrawals).

Well, you ween yourself off. Cut your consumption for a week, then again, and again, till it is gone. Now, my only staple is an occasional cup of chai tea (which I usually drink while planning adventures.

However, James, my friend. 3 to four sodas a day, 2-3 energy drinks a day? My friend, please tell me that you drink at least two bottles of water for every soda. If you do not, then you are looking at some major kidney stones in the near future... and those are not fun.

Not to mention, most soda and energy drinks are diuretics. They do not promote hydration of the body (a couple are not, thus my fixation on Dr. Pepper). On the contrary, they cause you to urinate more. Just because it is clear does not mean you are healthy... I mean, the clear could also be the energy drink leaving the body.

Renal failure is a very painful way to die... One of my friends in Iraq went that way, and it was not pretty.

Getting kids to give up soda or at least go to diet is probably the hardest but a necessary first step when setting your eating lifestyle straight. I swear, it's like asking high school athletes to hand over their first born hehe.

The biggest problem is just the empty calories and risk for insulin resistance later in life, the amount of caffeine is not significant enough to cause a diuretic effect (remember, it's still mostly water).

...the amount of caffeine is not significant enough to cause a diuretic effect (remember, it's still mostly water).

This is true for the most part, but some kids drink nothing but their favorite soda. Not all are as good for you as you would believe. Some are better than others.

However, it is not just the caffeine. Also, there are the syrups, the sugars, and the various preservatives. Caffeine itself is not a major diuretic (though it does work for the other side of the... equation), but the combination of all of the factors add up.

It is also far better to get your soda at the local fountain than out of a can or bottle. There is more water used in the fountain and more syrup used in the bottling plant.

(Downs a Coca-cola)

Do a search on the effects of Coca-cola on an 8 oz steak and an iron nail... I've seen it in my science class...

Anyways, I don't drink soda either. I do drink smoothies, but I typically make them, and don't add sugar. Just frozen berries(strawberries, black berries, raspberries, etc.) and milk. I hate the taste of pure milk, unless it is in cereal. Most cereal is too sweet too. Corn flakes, Raisin bran, and some Cheerios, of the non sweetened kind. Honey bunches of oats too, but you have to mix it with stuff. About half of it would have to be corn flakes.

With you on this one Jimbo.

Its an addiction. And sadly, the sweet dew is very rare and hard to come by this side of the world, so I've taken to buying it in dark alleyways from shady dealers.

I have to admit to being one of these darn kids who drinks a lot of soda (19). Coca Cola, and the occaisonal mountain dew when I can get it, however, are pretty much my only sugar intake. My sentiments, exactly. When I was a kid my mom used to make us drink a glass of milk a day with dinner, along with water and usually juice, or sometimes a soda. So I'd just pinch my nose and chug down the glass of milk, then wash it down with a glass of water to get the taste out of my mouth. Hell, I don't even drink the milk in my cereal bowl!

As for soda, I USED to drink a whole LOT of it, when I was younger. Then one day, at work, I just got this horrible, sick feeling after the 6th or so cup of pepsi, and I was like "I need to stop drinking this stuff". So I went cold turkey, and didn't drink it for nearly a year. Felt good, too, though there was ALWAYS that craving. Then one day I thought to myself, "maybe I'll have a Coke"...and that was it. I was hooked again!

Nowadays, I drink a LOT of water (like nearly a gallon a day, sometimes), juice here and there, and limit myself to no more than two 12oz cans of soda a day, which works out pretty good.

I suppose they may not have them where you are, but try the Arizona Iced tea mixes. My dad loves them, they come in these little cans that contain individual mixes for something like twelve quarts. The ones my dad drinks have no caffeine and (I think) no sugar, and pretty much everyone who tries it devours the stuff. Water suits me just fine though.

Arizona also makes teas you can buy in cans for $0.99 that are about twice as big as a normal pop can. Maybe those could work for you. I enjoy their juices, myself... not a tea person.

For the record, I'm in Michigan. Not sure if they have them where you are.

Well, I live in Ohio and we do have the Arizona cans here for the same price. I really like their green tea with honey. Good stuff. The reason I don't use them for my lunches is that my lil' lunch container can really only hold a can of pop. We tried some containers and such for tea, but they leaked pretty badly. Oh well. Emergency Services also use Coke to take care of spilled blood on roads and such... it dissolves the amino acids in the blood and render most of the blood-born pathogens inert and then destroys them. Not to mention Coca-Cola uses their product to degrease their engines!

Once I ate McDonalds while watching "Supersize Me," I just wanted a Diet Coke.

This was a funny movie. Of course you will have those health problems if you only eat super-sized meals with sodas... However, my university did a similar study. Five students ate and drank ONLY things they bought from the McDonalds menu (shortly after that movie came out and McDs switched to a healthy menu) and guess what... If you eat salads, drink the bottled water, mix up the menu a little... EXERCISE! Well, they all came out of it healthier than when they went in.

Do not believe every piece of propaganda that hits the video market... If "An Inconvienient Truth" is correct, then this worst winter in 80 years is due to global warming... which is why most places froze.

Back on the topic of soda, though. It is great for an every-now-and-then drink, but it should not be a staple of your daily diet. Or, if you do with to drink soda a lot, then drink two parts of water between each soda (1 part being equal to the amount of soda you drink. That gives your body the ability to flush the toxins and sugars through your system without over-stressing it.

Is it just me or doo all of these rant threads start off with a hasty generalization and then a declaration of opinion as truth?

Mmm, let's see...yes, I do believe that's the point. ;)

Man, and I thought the Monsters Against Adventurers thread died and was forgotten a long time ago. Good times. I presume you've seen my Warlock Fluff thread?

That was indeed a great time. I was reading alot of Heller at the time and it inspired Mr Winden's patterns immensely. Great to get that goofy stuff out of my head. It's a shame no one ever jumped on board to enter into our discussions. I'd have enjoyed seeing other posters take a similar tack and add to our letters. Oh well, fun while it lasted, though. :D

I've not seen the Warlock Fluff thread. I'll have to look for it.

Link to which--MAA or Warlock Fluff? Or both?

Well, I don't have a link to the MAA thread on me (I'm at work, without all of my bookmarks), but I can give you a link to Warlock Fluff.

You can either read the whole thread here, which starts off as a generic examination of warlock fluff and then segues into a story about Valeran Aldrik, warlock extraordinaire, thanks to posters liking a few examples I put up which then got out of control...

...or you can download just the story (the reason people like the thread) in PDF form here, with a fancy background and an introduction and all 112 pages of the story. Yes, 112. I got a bit overenthusiastic. :D

They're rants not lectures. It's an opinion not the law, I ask you people to discuss.

At my summer job, I'm entitled to free drinks as long as I am working (usually a two or three hour period, I'm a stock up boy at a deli. I say 'a' cause there are two others and we have assigned nights.) So, I'll usually have maybe 3 or 4 Pepsi's a week, 2 from work, 2 from my own money. Which is better then my friend, who, during the school year, had something like 4 Mountain Dew's. A day. I also drink lots of juice, esp. grape (forgive the abbreviation, I never could spell especially.) and usually some milk in the morning.

At least I think its milk. 1 and 2% aren't skim, right?

2% is way better than skim. 1% is half way between 2% and skim, so its still way better than skim. There really isn't anywhere to go but up from skim. EldritchLord will back me on this.

You want skim? In Iraq, I was sent a 1-pound bag of powdered milk. I used to mix it in with water till it was about as thick as my good-old 2%... It still tasted like chalk, but it was better than the alternative... Shelf-Stable Milk!

I don't drink much milk anymore except in the winters. In the summer, or the heat, the milk sits in your system and spoils.

JUst an interesting side note. There are a number of preliminary studies that suggest an associations between drinking cola (specifically cola- diet or regular) and kidney disease.

Whenever I'm going over to a friend's or a relative's house, I make sure my sister gets milk before I ask for any. If she makes a funny face and asks me if I want to finish it off, I know not to have any. :D

Thats just cruel. Also I have a younger brother, so now its my strategy. Also, as for milk, if we had a numerical badness rating for how bad stuff tasted in percentage, it would have to be x/fat% for milk. That puts skim as infinite, which seems pretty accurate to me.

Like I said, it's an asymptotic approach to infinite badness as fat approaches 0, so skim milk is a black hole of flavor. Using that analogy, you might say that skim milk absolutely sucks.

Skim isn't that bad, but I prefer 2%. Actually, I try not to drink milk much except in cereal.

Then again, I also drink Chai Tea which uses milk, as well as regular tea with milk and honey in it.

Nah, I just gotta balance out that love of fattening cola I have, remember? (The only guy on here that admitted to being overweight, which is surprising when you consider the average image of a D&D player...)

Don't worry about that metabolism guys - it will slow eventually. Trust me on that. I'm still pretty thin, but my gut and I are in a constant battle. I have to work to keep it in check. When I was younger, all I had to do was sleep. :D Enjoy it while you can. Growing older is a beatch. ;)

Not true. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and I assure you I know what sweet tea is though mine is more like syrup than tea. 1 1/2 cup of real sugar to a gallon. MMMMMMMMMM MMMMMM Good.

I drink one to two glasses of my Green Tea Ginger Ale every day. The problem with drinking mass quantities of pop is that. When you are emptying a Litre to two litres of Pop a day, you need to cut back.

I go through about a bottle a week, roughly.

I prefer Sweet Tea (real Sweet Tea. You poor bastards up North will never quite know what we're talkin about. Though Miccy D's gets sorta close. )

Green Tea, (served either ice cold or piping hot I can't drink it room temperature go figure) raspberry tea.

I really prefer Lemonaids though, Strawberry (with real strawberries!) lemonaide, orange mango lemonaid. The list goes on.

I only get to drink those once a week at best though.

Mostly I drink Water.

Re: Metabolism mine's pretty high but I wasn't blessed with totally Superior Genetics. I have to fight to keep my abs looking good.  (something I've recently regained since i got my job. It appears being a custodian burns fat at least if you work hard...) So my workout only has to be 40 minutes now instead of like two damn hours.
