Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. New Comedy Central show. Is targeting us?

I have seen the previews for this show a few times on Comedy Central. Each time I have thought to myself "Are they targeting the geek D&D culture?".

I figured we'd be too small in number, at least compared to things such as WoW and video games, to be a feasible target audience.

Your thoughts on this?

p.s. I hoping the show succeeds, though.

Anybody who watches Comedy Central has seen the previews. Though the show looks similar to the Gamers sequel Dorkness Rising, I doubt highly it is only intended as a parody of RPGers.

Hate to break it to you, but fantasy and sword-and-sorcery have been around since before D&D. The show looks like yet another in a long line of S&S parodies, this time a television show. The genre itself has been lampooned and parodied in everything from comic books to novels to low-budget pictures. Even fantasy shows like Xena and Hercules, to which this also bears a resemblance (not to mention that awful Conan show that was on for a few minutes around that same time), often tended to parody themselves, or to decline in quality to the point where they seemed to be doing so.

This looks like nothing more than the comments usually hurled at the screen during an episode of MST3K, dressed up cheaply like a Gamers movie might be, and pasted onto your television screen for all to see.

I’m sure that nerdy gamer things will get mentioned from time to time. But I doubt gaming is the crux of the show.

I just saw a different trailer on Comedy Central for the show. The main character even uses the term Tumble. It was after his ex-ish ( the "slutty" female character) did some back flips past some enemies, in the process having hew skirt/cloth fall down (as she was upside down). I believe he said something on the lines of "If you have to tumble, at least wear something else!". Yeah, I have a feeling it somewhat inspired by D&D...

Again, hate to break it to you, but the word tumble existed before D&D. We used to take an entire class called tumbling in junior high.

Again, probably can not escape a gamer reference in a modern Sword & Sorcery parody, but I really, really doubt it was meant to appeal only to us. Stephen Colbert gets a big laugh from me when he references a magic missile on air, but only a small laugh from the rest of his audience. He gets most of his laughs from things everybody recognizes, just like this show will.

If it gets any at all. Doesn't seem remarkably funny, to be honest. I wish it did, being a fan of fantasy parodies.

To me the tumble comment is a dual target word. I imagine that they have at least one writer/staff member on the show who plays/played D&D and they specifically picked the word tumble based on their D&D knowledge. But I also think that they chose the word because everyone who speaks English would know what tumbling was and the word works that way. It seems to be nothing but a very spiffy coincidence.

In a situation like this targeting the D&D audience also targets the World of Warcraft audience (and vice versa). For all intents and purposes we are all part of the same giant group of people who like fantasy. And to that end the movie targets fans of Everquest, Munchkin, Tolkien, Conan the Barbarian, Warhammer, etc.

I was really excited about watching it until my girlfriend pointed out that "Krod" is just "dork" spelled backwards. Now I don't know if it will be as funny just for that fact. Some of the previews look a little funny, though.

I honestly have high hopes for the show. I imagine it will try to have broad appeal, while at the same time, have specifically targeted gags that only the D&D geeks will get. See "Big Bang Theory" for more on this.

At the NYC Comicon (the footage is online), Chris Hardwick specifically asked how much of the show is influenced by D&D, and they weren't necessarily saying it wasn't.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Stephen Colbert has his hands in this one, either as a writer, consultant, or otherwise. Because, as he says (referring to poker), "If it's anything like D&D, I'll be up to my baldric in +1 scimitars before you can say Cure Light Wounds!"

From what I've seen in the TV guides over here, it looks like it will be in the same sort of vein as the radio program "The Sofa of Time". Mostly a spoof of fantasy films with a few rpg jokes in amongst them.
I doubt we'll get "I'm no racist or anything, but I hate it when orcs come over hear and take all our jobs" from a griffin-back taxi service driver.

Regarding the targeting of the show, I think Comedy Central recognizes the fandom D&D nerds hold for Stephen Colbert. They probably saw a viable market to which they could market this concept of a TV series.

I'm looking forward to it.

I think a lot of gamers watch comedy central. So it wouldn't suprise me if they throw a few references into the show. On the Sarah Silverman show they had the gay D&D couple. And Colbert is a Tolkein nut and a former gamer. Doesn't mean we are the most important audience they have though. My guess is they are trying to get people that like fantasy and science fiction, gamers, WoW craft players, fans of black adder, etc.

I think it looks horrible in great way. Knight's Tale was horrible for its anachronisms, but it's a fun movie if you just suspend your disbelief and go along with it knowingly. I think Krod Mandoon fits the same bill. The comedy used in the dialog and situations is more akin to something you'd see in slapstick comedy and/or primetime sitcoms. It's horrible if you want a serious sword and sorcery television show, but it's great for a Comedy Central series that's expected to be, well, comedic.

I agree. Sometimes we gamers take historical accuracy too seriously. I mean, its a comedy after all. For me the bottom line is, is it funny and does it hold my interest. Frankly, I would rather have something that is a little anachronistic. Hey it worked for Xena.

I think it isn't targetting D&D gamers specifically, but D&D gamers are in their target zone.

Hate to tell you but D&D players, at least the active ones, are not a large enough audience to get a nationally syndicated show. However the D&D nerds, plus the Xena/Hercules nerds, plus the Lord of the Rings nerds, and the Warcraft nerds, is a large enough audience to garner that sort of show.

From what I can tell the show looks like more of a Xena parody than anything else. Not a full fledges spoof, but more of a Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams sort of humorous satire. Not meant to target a certain show or game or specific thing in particular, but more the entire genre. Sort of like Austin Powers but without the stupid product placement.

It could be funny but it will have to be well written.

I found it surprisingly humorous. There are some definite comedic elements stylized after Python but the all around style was changing ever so slightly throughout that it never got too stale. Take the sword losing aspect, only appears once, which they said will be a running gag, used once, not bad. That and I really can see me writing a campaign based off this and just make it completely silly.

I wasn't expecting much. Therefore I wasn't let down and I was able to enjoy it. It was wonderfully stupid and at times clever. I think I would prefer is in 30 minute segments. There's got to be at least one writer with experience playing a fantasy RPG. Some of the humor was very familiar.

It really has potential. It's too early to tell if it really will be good, but the main cast has some good things going for it. Krod was good, Dongalore was great, and I hope to see more of Barnabus.

There were some funny parts. The part I disliked the most was the commercials. The commercials seem to come at the worst times. That and they just seemed too often. There we a few times when a scene went on longer than it should have but it didn't happen often. The show looks like it has potential.

I saw the first 2 episodes, and have to say it's a D&D campaign.

So long as you watch this show thinking it's a goofball D&D session, it's damned entertaining. Hell, my fiancee - who's never played D&D - finds it hilarious. My only concern is it's staying power. It's a gimmick show and they tend to have short lifespans. So far, though, so good.

Yeah, it's funny but it probably wont stay good past 2 seasons. Well, most shows go to crap after about season 2 or 3 so it wouldn't be a surprise.

Honestly, I'll be surprised if it makes it that far. There's only so much you can do with it and only so much goof the viewers can handle. Stuff like this burns brightly, but very quickly.

A lot of shows now days only go to about 10 to 20 episodes a season. I think it can go to somewhere between 21 to 40 episodes. But yeah, I don't see it going any farther than that.

That's true. I forgot about shortened and "dual" seasons. Still, like you say, it'll be a short run for our pal Krod. Guess I'll just enjoy it while we've got it. And until It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia starts again. :D That is the best show on TV. Easily.

What I'd like to see though, is for someone to pickmup the reigns and make related products that we can use. I'm thinking:

Minis: Who WOULDN'T want a figure of each of the main characters for game use. I'd love to drop a Dongalor as my BBEG at least one session.

T-Shirts: Damn, you'd be the talk of con with a shirt that says, "I was one of the ones."

Dice: A flaming sword as the one on most dice, and as the 20 on the d20.

The list goes on...

Sadly, I don't think the show is going to last long. Personally, I love it, but shows like this rarely stay on American TV. The BBC will probably continue to produce it for UK TV (the humor is very British), but if it's not sports, a show about a hospital, or a stupid reality series, American audiences rarely watch it.

I disagree with the post that said there's only so much you can do with the show. It's a fantasy setting. The only limits are the imaginations of the writers.

It's not the setting that imposes limits. It's the style.

I hate those kinds of shows. The only ones I'm willing to watch is South Park, Mind of Mencia (if it's still going), The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and Dexter. (the one about the Serial Killer that hunts other serial killers, not that stupid little kid show)

I haven't gotten the chance to see this yet, but I really want to.

Most Americans watch stupid shows like that cuz most Americans have crappy taste and are dumb.

Two of my favorite shows have one thing in common besides good writing, good acting, and funny humor.

Scrubs and The Office both lack a laugh track.

Tell me is there anything more insulting then a show that has to TELL you when to laugh? I hope laugh tracks go away from all shows forever.

This show at least gives us that dignity, and I think the humor is well done enough.

I hate laugh tracks. That being said, I have never seen The Office, so I can't comment on it. Scrubs is a hit and miss kind of thing for me. I like some of it, hate some of it. A good portion of it had me laughing though. It was just the dud episodes that I hated.

I also like it when that show focuses more on the humor instead of the drama. Fortunately, that's how it is most of the time.

ER also never had a laugh track. I guess good comedy really doesn't need it...

(ER was a comedy, right)

I personally find Krod Mandoon very funny, and to me just a general spoof on all things "sword-and-sorcery". To me it seems to parody LoTR more than D&D (the giant eye Dongaloor has reminds me of The Eye of Sauron) and Frodo Baggins could be considered a "low born swordsman". Bruce may slyly reference the whole Sam & Frodo having too close of a friendship, but unfortunately I cannot seem to come up with any more relations between the stories. (I don't support the Sam/Frodo theory, just thought it might be relevant)

I have the same opinion with most people about how long this show will last, 2 - 3 seasons, and then it will become too redundant (just like its title "The Flaming Sword of Fire"). There are only so many time we can watch naughty Pagan festivals and hear crude sex jokes without wanting to see some real "action". So far in the 2 episodes, i've heard the phrase "well this is awkward" and if its going to be a running gag i'm going to get tired of it quick.

Let's hope it gets better and funnier, the plot seems interesting.

That really depends on what the plans for the show are.

I mean, have they planned this show ahead, or did they make a pilot and run with it?

If they decided to turn this into a sitcom style show, then the show won't get into full swing for a few episodes. It just has to survive the first few episodes then start successfully building.

I'm saying 2 seasons tops because shows like this that go longer than that jump the shark somewhere in season 3.

I must say I'm an loved the take on the Cyclops. I must say it is nice to watch a show with continuing storyline that doesn't get confusing and bogged down.

Now that the sixth episode has aired, I suppose the first season is over? I honestly didn't expect an actual story when I watched the first episode, and yet, it turned out there was.

I thought Chancellor Dongalor was the funniest character, mainly due to his actor (Matt Lucas). That guy has great comedic timing.

But I think what I enjoyed most about the show is that it reminded me of my last D&D campaign. We weren't comedic writers or anything (obviously) but due to various factors, a lot of our adventures were not entirely serious, or downright silly.

Yes, it appears the season is over.
They also didn't rerun the episodes after the 6th.

I suspect it might have been Screwed By The Network.
