For that matter, why does the Army allow people to stay in that long? Stop holding up that slot and move out so someone else can get promoted. The guy made command sergeant major in 1992. Hey buddy, that's as high as you're going to go. Time to call it quits. I understand enjoying what you do and all, but let go, let some new blood move up.

[From the verbage in the story he seemed to.] Yes and no. On one hand, yes you want good people to stick around. On the other hand, a lot of **** people hang around that long too and hold up progress (as long as he stays in, that's one less person that can get promoted). Anyway, that guy isn't the worst senior guy I've met (not by a longshot) but not the best either. His "no whining" policy sometimes much seemed to mean "don't bring up any issues at all no matter how legitimate they might be". I just think that no matter how good you are and how much you enjoy your job, there comes a point when your time is past. I work with some civilians who are retired military and they are all great people and extremely knowledgeable, but they best serve right now as civilians, not as leaders trying to enforce the Army they grew up in on the current generation.
