Well go far enough back and all diamonds were pretty much junk. In the middle ages people used to liked coloured stones a lot more, rubies in particular. They thought diamonds were pretty boring.
Now this may seem a little déclassé at first, but have you a pawnbrokers you can get to easily? For the price of a new piece you can often pick up something equal or better in terms of material value with the added benefit of being vintage or antique and the generally superior design and workmanship that entails.

Those brown diamonds are industrial-grade stones that have been cut as gemstones. Not sure what your wife is thinking, aside from they're the "new thing" and therefore has "neat" value. I would drop into Tiffany's and see about something that looks a little nicer, with stones that might just be worth what you're paying for them. A nice tennis bracelet in yellow gold with emerald and/or ruby accents is far more likely to be worn over time than a heavy pendant that looks like it's been through a pool of blood and allowed to dry.
Not to mention, it's likely to be somewhat less expensive than that pendant. Once the fad value drops off, real jewelers are unlikely to appraise for even a third of their purchase price. It doesn't look like you're going to be able to do jewelry exactly the way she wants it, but at least you can get the right format, and find something that she'll wear, and be happy with.
I know I wouldn't be caught dead wearing either of those.

Not declasse (sorry too lazy to find the accents) at all - in fact, have done so (with success) in prior years. The biggest issue is really my own state of health. I didn't make it in today, so the "second-hand" jeweler would be the only option to "blue box" it. (don't ask - she adores the blue box, regardles of what's inside)

Heh. I bought that one for the fiancee a couple of years ago. She loves it. Emeralds are her thing. I made sure she has a full set (necklace, ring, earrings and bracelet). This year I'm finishing her sapphire set. Next? Diamonds. She hates rubys so I'm in luck.
I already got her her wedding bands (2 carats total - 2 5/8 with the engagement ring) but I still need to get a necklace, earrings and bracelet. I may do pearls, too. I like buying jewelry and, apparently, I've got fantastic taste. If ya'all only knew what I did about the stuff, you'd see things a bit differently, I imagine. One year I was able to get an artist friend of the family to make a painting for her. It's three tree frogs. He paints on slate (and other stuff) and he's amazing. Anyhoo, he's got one coming out of a crack he painted in the slate and some others on a branch an' stuff. I think it's one of her favorite gifts I ever got her. And, it's got a story to go along with it. The artist is an odd guy (no way!) and keeps lotsa animals an' stuff around his place. Well, he'd never painted frogs before (exclusive!) and had a couple of tree frogs about to serve as models. One day, he went to go check on 'em and they were dead. A tarantula he'd been watching for someone killed 'em. Heh. Whoa ... that's kinda sad. Oh well, it's always neat to have something like that associated with a gift, IMO.
My wife's favorite is dragons. I put together a rough design of a piece I'd like to have made at some point, but so far the 2 smiths I've found haven't been able to come through. Basically, as I prefer silver and she gold, I was looking for a pendant - 2 dragons, 1 silver (or white gold mix, for better setting), 1 gold, facing each other (side view), shaped into a heart (with tails intertwined). A black sapphire eye for the silver, an emerald eye for the gold. One day.
A somewhat more expensive, but sturdier setting would be all platinum, with one side gold-plated. I would love to see it done, though. I sounds absolutely beautiful.

I was looking for bracelets that came close to the description PBN gave, and thought it was pretty.
I'd wear it everywhere, myself, and it was less than a third of what the Chocolate heart was.
After all, no fair rejecing the current options without putting forward one I think would work better.
