So I can't remember the last time I was involved in three simultaneous arguments on these boards.  That happened today.   While it's damned fun, since it doesn't happen here all that often anymore, I wanted to make it known (though it likely already is) that there ain't no hard feelin's on this end.  Yeah.  And I was bored.  So hug it out.  Or don't.  Whatever.

Only if its a bro-hug.
Because since I'm a man, I cannot show any sort of emotion unless it involves sports or war.

And at least the forum wasn't dead today.

Is that where you punch each other on the shoulder before hugging, or where you hug but try to cripple the guy by slapping his back while doing so?

To me, the bro-hug is where you shake hands and put your other arm around the other person's shoulder/back. You have to make sure your arms are between your bodies so that there's not any real contact.

Pffft, weak!

I might be a guy, but at least I give real hugs.

Feel free to take on, I have plenty Wink

Also this is the web, anyone who takes it seriously is doing it wrong. These discussions are fun.

nah i think a bro hug is where to guys hug kinda affectionately but tell each other it's 100% Platonic.

Bro-hugs are funny, especially when there's that little awkward pause in the beginning, where the guys can't quite figure out how to show affection and still appear manly It's even better when one of them is drunk and forgets how to do it.

Anyway, take a big hug from me. Of all the people I could disagree with, you're among my favourites.

Heh.  I actually don't have too much of a problem with the Bro Hug ... er, at least the sober kind.  It's gets a li'l weird when your Marine buddy is on leave, drunk, huggin' from behind while you're sittin' unaware and givin' ya' stubbly kisses on the cheek.  We uhh ... we never got a server in that club again.  'Course that had nothin' to do with hugs an' kisses - they were all sorts of cool with that stuff there.  It did, however, have everything to do with a drunken Marine.    We were spending about $80 a round on drinks and we still got no love after that.  That's how obnoxious he was.  And maybe some of the rest of us, too.  ;)

As for the hug, I'll take it gladly and return it in kind.  You're one of my favorite people 'round here to argue with, too.  Hell, I even like agreein' with ya'.

The key component of a bro hug is that at no point may the hips/genitals come into closer proximity than is absolutely required.

Can we shank each other instead? I just got this nice new shank carved out of tarrasque-bone and I really wanna see what it can do. I mean, shanking means you care enough to shank them and it is violent, thus meaning as males we can show emotion.

*draws tarrasque-bone shank*

Alright, who wants a shank?

Yep.  Quote 1 + Quote 2.  Plus, you are forbidden to make eye-contact on the lead-in to the hug or whisper anything during the hug.  That's how I was taught.

Well, that's how we used to do it. But that wasn't good enough. Now we have to be all *shudder* "in touch with our feelings" and stuff. Personally, I blame women. And the cultural popularity of gay men. Oh, and a lack of saber tooth tigers to club.

Damn missing tigers.

Honesty, some of us don't even do that.  I feel put-upon when I have to hug my mother (which she insists on doing every time we see each other).  My father and I haven't hugged in over a decade, and we actually live together.  The only time I intentionally touch people is when I have to shake hands in church during the whole "peace be with you" thing and hold hands during the "Lord's Prayer".

I use the same chest crushing hug on both women and men.  The one where you try to physically press them into that metaphorical hole of loneliness in your heart.

Well seeing as how other forms of old fashion greetings/thanks, such as copping a feel and butt patting, is now seen as sexual harassment we've gotta stick to other things. and well. hugging is just ya know. awkward when doing it to another dude.

pretty much all the bro hug is, as kinda mentioned above, is just trying to be affectionate while still looking manly and cool. For the most part it's all just a dumb show.

That's the big reason you have to have the handshake in between your bodies. It acts as a buffer to reduce physical contact and add spacing between the huggers.

Uh, yeah.  Women do that with their hands too, ya know.  Not to mention this weird little, seldom-heard-of-secret-technique to sanitize one's hands called "washing".

I don't do hugs unless it involves either crushing bones or the location is on top of a skyscraper during an electrical storm. Those are the only instances I find the activity is even worth participating in...

Ah. The 'underarm grab' variation amuses me, where you clasp bisceps or something. I bet thats awkward (well, more awkward) if one persons arm is much longer than the others.
