#1 julescarv Feb 03, 2009 19:46:50	What are yours? Mine: 1. "Malus" instead of "penalty" -- as in, "you take a -4 malus to attack rolls with weapons with which you aren't proficient." I think that half the time, it's just because someone's brain hits a blank spot and he can't remember the word "penalty," so he thinks "what's the opposite of bonus? Malus? Sure... sounds right." I suppose that happens to the best of us. Other times, though, it strikes me as just being an attempt to be clever and entertaining or something and failing. 2. "Fluff" as a description of non-mechanical aspects. The very word suggests that it is ephemeral and unimportant. It isn't necessarily intended as such: people sometimes say things like "I don't want to play a swordsage because I dislike the fluff in the Tome of Battle, and I take fluff seriously." In spite of context, though, the word itself still suggests unimportance to me. I suppose I'd prefer "narrative aspects" or something, like "I don't like the narrative aspects of Tome of Battle." I'm not sure if that's a good substitute, but anyway, I don't like "fluff." What about y'all? What pet peeves do you have regarding writing on these boards?

Malus is the opposite of bonus - both are from Latin. What about y'all? What pet peeves do you have regarding writing on these boards? Canon - like settings have to be run as published or you're doing something wrong. Larry Elmore almost certainly never ran the Realms like the published campaign setting (from any edition) and likewise Gygax made Greyhawk up as he went along and his players explored. Tolkien also spent time making up changing Middle Earth - it was never "cannon" to him.
#17 Authw8 Feb 04, 2009 9:59:34	Cannon - like settings have to be run as published or you're doing something wrong. The word is spelled "canon" when you're referring to that definition. Also, this is the only canon that counts.
