Lies. I watched the Bernard Hopkins fight Saturday and I can tell you without a doubt that boxing is just stupid today. I used to love it but after I've seen MMA, well, I just can't go back. It's like MacGyver that way - awesome when you're a kid but just not 'with it' today. ;)
The Hopkins fight saw two guys basically throw one to three punches and then hug each other. What's interesting is that back in the day the ref would make them fight out of that position. Now, in an obvious effort to try and capture some excitement, the ref immediately calls a break. It's like an awkward dance that sees three people just repeat the same motions over and over again for 12 rounds. Awful. Punch, punch, punch, hug, break, punch, punch, hug, break, punch, hug, break ... When a boxer pins his opponent to the ropes, his opponent hugs him and is immefiately granted a reset of position. How is that fighting? You literally hug your way out of a bad spot? Lame. In MMA, if you're stuck against the fence your opponent will be trying to take you down, elbow your face, knee your ribs or thigh, maybe just push a forearm into your grill while he punches your midsection until you do something. There's no hugging to escape in MMA. Boxing, to me, is dead. It just isn't exciting anymore.
