| #1EscherEnigmaOct 30, 2012 20:46:14 | So the base is having a blood drive tomorrow and I'm seriously considering going. This would involve lying because, as a man who has, in fact, had sex with a man, I would have to lie about having sex with a man to donate blood. This is on account of the FDA's regulations imposed during the AIDs crisis of the 80s putting a lifetime ban on any man who's had sex with a man since 1977. So here's the ethical question... knowing what I know (my status, the rigorous testing given to all donated blood regardless of the answers to the questionaire, and my risk-factors that contribute to why I might *not* know my status) would it be ethical to lie in order to donate blood? |
| #2Ragnar_LodbrokOct 30, 2012 20:48:10 | Sure. It'll really help someone else, so how can it be "wrong" to do one minor, harmless lie? |
| #3bone_nagaOct 30, 2012 20:52:11 | All blood gets tested before being given to someone anyway. It would be stupid to trust one person's life to the complete honesty of another (or several others). So in my opinion, as someone that knows people who have received blood transfusions, and as someone with friends who have been infected with AIDS from blood transfusions, I say that if you want to do something good, go for it. That said, my own opinion is that even though I could (well sometimes, overseas travel and tattoos disqualify me often anyway) I choose not to donate until someone pulls their head out of their ass and fixes some of the rules, particularly ones like the sex with other men, which I find to be unnecessarily discriminatory. A better question would be "have you had unprotected sex with someone in the last X months?" |
| #4zombie_babiesOct 31, 2012 8:15:20 | Well, it can't possibly hurt anyone and it may help. I think the math on that is pretty clear. |
| #5KlirshonOct 31, 2012 8:35:38 | Considering that the blood gets tested anyways, don't worry about omitting irrelevant data. My parameters however insist that I must urge you to donate a portion of your brain (or the whole organ if you would be so generous). Some of us are famished. |
| #6Cpt_MichaOct 31, 2012 9:03:15 | So the base is having a blood drive tomorrow and I'm seriously considering going. It's a white lie. Go for it. Also braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnzzz smart person.... *bites EE and infects with the zombie virus* |
| #7KlirshonOct 31, 2012 9:26:50 | Note to self: install mandibles to masticate brains. |
| #8Robin_HoodlumOct 31, 2012 10:48:34 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. So while your heart is in the right place and you want to help your fellow man, lieing is bad. And it could, potentially, result in some legal action or employment re-adjustment. So, my advice, being what it is, is to not give blood. |
| #9jetshieldOct 31, 2012 10:52:37 | words With his hunger growing, ZombieJet leaps out of the shadows onto RH's back. brrrrrraaaaaaiiiinnnnnnsssssssssssssssssssss *takes a large bite from RH's neck* |
| #10Robin_HoodlumOct 31, 2012 10:56:18 | words *shakes head and loosens eyeballs* Braaaiiinnnssss!!! *wanders off to find brains... knows better than to look in the OTT* |
| #11melloredOct 31, 2012 11:06:15 | Sex, by definition requires a male and female. Therefor, you cannot have sex with someone of the same gender. Therefor, it's not a lie to say you didn't do something that's impossible to do. ![]() |
| #12Robin_HoodlumOct 31, 2012 11:08:13 | Sex, by definition requires a male and female. Well, since marriage, by definition, is a union between man and woman, are you against gay folks from marrying? |
| #13jetshieldOct 31, 2012 11:12:38 | Sex, by definition requires a male and female. brrrraaaaaiiinnnnnnsssssssss! *bites mellored* (see sig for details) OOC: RH, get your sig updated ![]() |
| #14melloredOct 31, 2012 11:13:08 | Sex, by definition requires a male and female. That's not the definition. It's what some people are trying to make the definition. And i'm against any goverment recognizing of any kind of marrage. You shouldn't get special treatment just because you share a life with someone. |
| #15Robin_HoodlumOct 31, 2012 11:19:34 |
Oops! How do I do that? I mean "hide" it an' junk...? |
| #16melloredOct 31, 2012 11:25:05 |
(sblock) junk (/sblock) Except replace ( and ) with [ and ] |
| #17jetshieldOct 31, 2012 11:25:09 | What's with the zombies? Read for details. [s(take this out)block=Plan Zeta]Welcome to the Halloween zombie game! It's pretty simple and hopefully pretty fun. If you see someone with a zombie avatar pop into a thread you're posting in and they happen to quote you and say something brilliant like 'brains' or 'uhhnmhmhhhaa' and then take a 'bite' out of you, well, you've been infected! You'll be a zombie in no time! Uhh ... if you want to. You don't have to play, of course. But if you want to, please help us spread the zombieness as far across the boards as we possibly can. All you need to do once infected is change your avatar to any zombie pic (CoC compliant, of course) that you wish and then add a link to this post in your sig. That way people that see you and are curious can find out what's up. Once that's all done, feel free to pop into a thread and bite someone. The only thing I would suggest is to refrain from biting everyone in sight. It won't be all that fun if we try to get everyone all at once. Let's make sure there's some non-zombies about ... cuz it'll be interesting to see how they react and play along. So yeah, I think that's about it. Oh! We have informed the staff about Plan Zeta and they're cool with it so long as we don't get all stupid about it. So if you wanna play you're ok to do so so long as you don't get kwazy with it. So yeah, it's ok but it's also all on us. This is a community driven game so we're counting on you (the community) to help us out! Let's make this Halloween on the boards zombie-tastic! To clarify, this is NOT an officially sanctioned event.[/s(take this out)block] copy paste that and remove where I've added "(take this out)" in the sblock tags. |
| #18DoctorBadWolfOct 31, 2012 13:09:58 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. Lieing is only "bad" if some combination of intent, result and/or other circumstance are bad to a degree that outweighs the good. Moral absolutism is nonsense. |
| #19ADHadhOct 31, 2012 13:54:52 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. Finally, a brain untou- EWWWW, pony brain! But since there seems to be none other left... I guess I'll just season it more *CHOMP* |
| #20draco1119Oct 31, 2012 14:11:47 | EE, I've lied on that portion of the questionnaire ever since the first time I gave gave blood in '93. Granted, my situation is different from yours (I don't choose to consider the non-consensual kind as "sex"), but... yeah, go ahead. |
| #21Robin_HoodlumOct 31, 2012 14:15:45 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. Your opinion. Moral absolutism is nonsense. Again, your opinion. |
| #22melloredOct 31, 2012 14:22:01 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. It's your opinion that it's his opinion. Oh, and umm... brains? |
| #23ADHadhOct 31, 2012 14:24:45 |
|
| #24jetshieldOct 31, 2012 14:25:20 | Brrrrraaaaaiiiiinnnnnnssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| #25EscherEnigmaOct 31, 2012 22:06:37 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. Hrm...
For that matter, I will kill to save. Heck, that's actually the business I'm in (in an indirect fashion). Less dramatically...
So... yeah. Guess I'm one of those "people". |
| #26bone_nagaOct 31, 2012 22:14:37 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. There are a lot of cases of the ends justifying the means, some of which I think you would probably support. Isn't war very much a case of the end justifying the means? Sure we play by certain rules, but we know going into it that no matter how hard we try, innocent people are going to be injured, killed, displaced, or otherwise affected. Killing is bad, but in war or even in self defense you know that sometimes it is him or you. Spies and undercover law enforcement have to lie and deceive others frequently in order to perform their job. That's not to say that all means are justified, but there has to be some sort of middle ground. Otherwise we're all either a bunch of psychos or a bunch of ****. |
| #27homicidal_squirrelOct 31, 2012 22:52:12 |
I disagree. /Shoots HC in the head. |
| #28homicidal_squirrelOct 31, 2012 23:03:13 | I'm the one who started the infection. You need to shoot my genetials to kill me. That's what I did. ;) |
| #29KillerGMNov 01, 2012 11:27:13 | No matter what some "people" may believe, the ends does not justify the means. So, by this, it seems to be a small thing to lie about your sexual activity in order to serve a larger purpose of providing blood. Ethics are funny like that. However, not all "bad things" are equally "bad", nor are all "good things" equally "good". The question is if the "good thing" you want to do is of more value than the "bad thing" you have to do to do it. So, is giving blood a greater "good" than lying is "bad"? You can also look at it this way: is this a selfish desire to thumb your nose, as it were, at the statute? Do you truly want to give blood out of an altruistic purpose? What kind of personal stain would lying leave on you? Is it better to take a personal negative (lying) for a global positive (giving blood)? Or is that global positive actually just another personal negative - pride? Ah, so many interesting ways to look at it! ![]() |
