I was just reading about him on MSN... I had no idea he was a minor league catcher for the Cardinals before he started wrestling.

Yeah, though the fighting was fake, the guys really, truly did put their lives on the line to play the game. That's why so many are either broken down shells of the men they once were or dead. Obviously they didn't have to go down that road, but it's a damned shame that in order to follow their dreams they were defacto required to do that to themselves. Not too many scrawny big time wrestlers. At least not back in the day.

EDIT: Watching that movie The Wrestler may have somewhat softened my opinion of these guys. Heh, damned fine movie, that.

May 23, 2011 15:42:26 I've got a couple of friends who used to wrestle small time, one of them is a freak show performer who hammers nails into his nose and lets people staple gun money to him (he got a nice bruise underneath his thumbnail the other day when one the wolf traps he uses in his act snapped shut on him when he was moving stuff around after a show).

I understand how much those guys get hurt.

That's what I was insinuating. Guess I shoulda put "Slim Jim" in quotes after all. I was also trying to work out a "Slim Jim/Stim Gym" pun but it just didn't come together.

May 24, 2011 13:53:17 Used to love wrastlin' when I was a kid. In St. Louis we had a local show called Wrestling at the Chase and my favorite at the time was King Kong, or "Bruiser", Brody. In my opinion, when wrastlin' was small was when it was at its best. Which is probably why I preferred the NWA at the time over the WWF.

Anyway, Randy Savage was indeed a St. Louis Cardinal before he became a wrestler and so was a favorite of mine and my Dads. He will be missed.
