Man... as in human race, not specifically male.
But you knew that already.

I love dogs as well. I just took onto a fourth one. A little Malinois Bitch that got nailed by the second dog of the owner.
www.halsueberkopf.com/2012/10/welcome-ho...

That being said, I wrote a post about the situation with Kabang. That dog should have been put to sleep a year ago.
www.halsueberkopf.com/2012/10/put-kabang...

People have forgotten when to let go and their own selfish feelings win over what is necessary, should be done, is humane and right to do. This dog has endured unspeakable pain and suffering throughout the last year, even whelped a litter and now it turned out that she's got heartworm and needs chemo on top of that. What else does it take before the Vets finally put that pour soul out of her misery?

It's not about cancer. It's about the whole entire situation. She has no upper jaw, no nose, a dog experiences the world through his nose, she's got heartworms on top of that PLUS the sexually transmitted desease and a litter of puppies, WHILE being in that condition.

That is NOT a life for a dog. She is exploited and not more like an experiment. Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give to a dog is to let them go where they don't have to live in pain anymore. And let's be honest, there is no way that she is not in pain. Look at these injuries... ist must be excrutiating.

Try imagining the pain of you losing an arm and living with an open wound for a year. And then heartworm, that is slowly killing you and then a transmitted disease that demands chemo on top of that.

No, with all due respect, she needs to be let go. As much as I love my dogs, in a case like that, there would be not a single doubt of what I would do, as much as it hurts, it would hurt more knowing the kind of suffering and health issues they go through for the rest of their lives.

I'm with you, kid.  When I saw the pic my first thought was 'why didn't they shoot it in what's left of it's head?'.  That poor dog.  It sounds cold but it's the right thing to do in this case.  And I have a dog (my first one ever, too - and I'm an old, old man) and when she dies I'm gonna totally lose it for a while but I'd still have her put down if she went through something like this.

I am right there with you. If that was any of my dogs and I had a gun, I'd do it myself but people are way to chicken these days. They love and humanize their pets to the point where they can't even think straight. The kindest thing would be to either PTS or put a bullet through her head. It does sound cold and cruel but what quality of life does she have?
There will be no reconstructive surgery and I just read on their Facebook that they are going ahead with the aggressive chemo.

There is no end to the suffering of this pour soul. It makes me so angry that this is done all in the name of "caring" and "animal protection."

It has nothing to do with caring or protection. It's beyond selfish and cruel.

I had to put my little male to sleep because he had injured his leg. He couldn't be exercised the way he had to be in order to burn his energy and drive. It drove him crazy and he did not do well. Working Dog people love crazy driven dogs but at the same time, when they injure themselves and it's something they have live with for the rest of their lives it becomes counter productive, especially when they are so young.

It was the hardest thing I've done but I would do it again. Having a 1 year old dog that can't even walk 5 minutes without hurting and driving himself crazy to the point where he just can't have a normal life, I did put him to sleep. It still hurts but at least I know I did the right thing for him. At least with our pets, we can give them that kind of gift. With humans, not so much, unless you've got a MOLST but that only goes so far...

I disagree with this part specifically.  And the reason why goes back to your complaint of "humanizing" our pets.

This [] just saved the lives of two lives girls by putting herself at risk.  How would you feel if you saved two kids from a burning building and suffered third degree burns?  Would you want to be "rewarded" with being put to death?

I understand what you're saying, and I wouldn't say boo if they had decided to put her down; I don't, however, think that it's fair to call it "beyond selfish and cruel".  But that's just my

third degree burns are way different than missing half of your head. And for a dog about half of their senses are from the part that this bitch is missing. Noses are important to doggies. So are upper jaws. The dog probably may be happy to be alive, but it doesn't mean it hasn't been miserable or in pain. It probably has been cruel to keep it alive.

It's a dog and not a human being. The dog doesn't understand our way of thinking and that is exactly how accidents happen. We not only put  human but also human moral standards on dogs and don't allow dogs to be dogs anymore and it interferes with rational decisions.

People leave babys unsupervised with their dogs in the same room because "Buddy loves that baby SO much, he can't possibly hurt her."
Wake up call: Buddy is a dog, Baby is annoying dog, dog corrects annoying thing and kills it in the process."

People put a small teacup dog into the big dog park and expect everybody to play along nicely.
Wake up call: Prey Drive kicks in, big dog chases teacup sized squeaky thing and kills it with one shake.
What do you expect? Dogs are predators, it's survival of the fittest, eat or get eaten. It's instinct!

Dogs are capable of doing heroic acts and they weasel their way into our hearts but Hollywood has done a tremendous job in the humanization of dogs. The dog sense of most people went out the window and who pays for it? It's dogs like Kabang that pay with suffering and endless pain because we have lost the sight for the bigger picture.
The bigger picture is the suffering of an animal that is being exploited for publicity and celebrated as a hero and because of that people are emotionally involved and can't do what's right.

Put all these feelings aside, sit back and look at what you have in front of you. Look at the big picture. Look at Kabang and don't let the picture of a happily tail wagging dog fool you.

That dog is in excrutiating pain! For over a year now. Let her go!

I read an article about a year ago now that was penned by a doctor.  It explained that most long term care during someone's later years or treatment for issues that are typically terminal serves only to prolong misery.  Quantity of life, if you will, is extended at the cost of quality - oftentimes a very, very significant penalty to quality.  And the actual cost is also usually astronomical.  The familes then have to deal with extended suffering for no reason and have to foot the bill for it as well.  This, then, adds major stress and reduces the quality of their life as well.  For all our advancement there's plenty of places where we're going backwards.  The reasons are typically selfishness (I don't wanna lose ma!) and, you guessed it, religion.

Please, it's nowhere near comparable and nobody ever said to force euthanazia onto humans. And how nice of you of comparing this to Nazis. Very convenient since I'm German.  If a human being wants to leave this planet because they cannot stand the suffering any longer, than let them make their own decision and let them go. I would not want to be a vegetable. I would not want my family to suffer from not only the anguish of me being a living dead but wouldn't want them to suffer from the financial burden either.

As for Kabang. She is not a human being.  As much as I love dogs, and I am a crazy dog lady, there should always be a line between dog and human, I'm not quite sure if I'd go for the human. That being said, if I had to make a decision to safe the life of one of my dogs and a human, I would probably go for my dog and then go and get the human out, even though I risked the life of my dog in SAR. I know SAR dogs can get killed, very much like police or military dogs get killed. However, if it comes down to it. I'd jump after my dog.
If she was my dog, I would euthanize her. It's not an easy decision, and never should be an easy decision, however with Kabang, in my personal opinion, she shouldn't be kept alive for the sole purpose of human selfishness.

I see you're deeply and personally involved in this case. You've obviously spent hours days weeks caring for the dog and talking to people about their motives. I'm sure you've noticed many canine suicide attempts, because we all know there's no way the dog might want to live. I wish more people had access to the human-dog translation device that made it possible for you ask the dog what it wants.

Already had this talk with my sisters, parents and partner.  We all agree: pull the plug.  It's not fair to the one in the machine to be kept in suffering, and it's not fair to the survivors to keep waiting "one more day" hoping for a miracle.  Pull the plug.

For a pet... honestly, it's not a human, and unfortunately it can't clearly communicate it's wishes.  So yes, we have to decide for it, because it can't tell us or not.

As for forced euthanization of other people... fortunately, we still live in a world where that's a decision for the family.  So no, I don't get the decision on whether or not to pull the plug on Hawking, parapalegics, or other people.  I hope they, no... I hope everyone has had a conversation with their family and loved ones regarding their wishes in case of disaster.  And fortunately, I'm not the one that has to live with their decision, they and their family is.

So no.  I'ts not fair to compare saying "yes, if it was my decision I'd euthaize the dog, and yes, I'd say pull the plug on a family member" to euthanizing other people.  Because family makes decisions for the family.  Strangers making decisions for strangers is a different beast entirely.

You're completely missing the point. You sit there claiming great moral superiority because you would choose to kill the dog. You claim everyone who has a differing opinion on the matter (like the people who actually know the dog and have seen it's behavior) are selfish, evil jerks.

I have news for you: the dog probably doesn't want to die. There aren't a whole lot of suicidal animals in the world. If there were, life wouldn't have flourished on Earth. Animals want to live and make little animals. Anything else is secondary.

To be completely honest, I'd put the dog down myself, but not because I'm oh-so-morally-superior. I'd do it because it's expedient. I don't honestly care if the dog wants to live or die. Just like I don't care if the pig (sorry piggles) that provided me with last nights stuffed pork chops wanted to live.

You can take your supposed moral superiority and your fallacious claim to know what the dog wants, or what's best for it, and stuff it. I could name a number of historical figures that made similar claims about people they deemed as lesser beings. History, as a general rule, doesn't remember them as morally superior. Quite the opposite in most cases.

You are German? I would like to know, stadtgeist, does it mean ghost city or spirit of a city?

Yep, that is exactly what it is. It's a spirit/ghost of the city

Sweet, thank you.

True, but that doesn't negate my fix of your statement.

No. Your statement was flawed. I corrected the statement and made it my own. I've also got applied for a copy-right to the name Hipster_Cat. You must now pay me royalties for your existance.

Germany. Even something as simple as a swastica button or sticker is illegal because it displays the swastica. Kind of moronic when you think about it, but it's the way it is.

Well, then Hater needs to lighten up. I had to swallow the "Heil Hitler" comments, which we generally are very sensitive about, but meanwhile I've been around Americans long enough to know they don't take stuff like that as serious as we do. Where I'm from, you can't do that. Not without serious repercussions, socially, politically and legally.

I realize that you're (probably) not Chancellor Merkel, and are therefore uninvolved in policy-making, but this strikes me as ridiculous.  Does this mean you're not allowed to learn about the Holocaust in school, due to shame?  That would be like Americans not acknowledging slavery or English-speaking Canadians denying the subjugation of Quebecois after the Plains of Abraham.

Or Buddhist?

I've occasionally wondered at the German government's restriction on pretty much anything that might remind people there was ever a Nazi party. Are they really trying to pretend it never happened, or is it some form of misguided attempt at appeasement? Either way, it's just plain silly.

I'd be interested to hear a German's opinion on the matter.

Oh, it's the opposite. We are reminded about it every single day. It's in German Class, History, Politics, Religion. It is constantly present on TV, on every single channel and that ever since I can remember. That's how we are kept shameful, why it took a socker game for us to actually show patriotism. Slowly, very slowly we are able to show our love for our country and support for the military.

Yeah, there have been multiple attempts to ban them. the reason the ban did not go through is because they had Agents from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution within the Party. It was decided to withdraw the Agents, which might make a ban, finally possible. I'm not quite sure where the process is standing now.

If you're happy letting the government redistribute your tax dollars to pay for them, hey, that's your problem. Oh, and by the way, some of them did belong to the communist party while in Cuba. Then there are those who send money to Cuba. The Cuban government getsa piece of that money, so your tax dollars... yeah, their going to communist as well.

So, all the Cubans live off the gov't handout?! They can't find jobs and work for themselves?!
Surely there is at least one Cuban in Florida who has a job and pays for his own stuff!!!

I'm sure some do. I've seen a lot that don't. WHen I was working on my bachelor degree, I had to drive by one street in the city of Hialeah. Hialeah is basically Cuban central in South Florida. So anyways, on this street there used to be this older man (about 40-45 years old) who stood on the street corner. This guy had a cup which he used to collect money. On his chest he had this sign that read "Soy balsero Cubano. Dame dinero." It translates to"I'm a cuban rafter. Give me money." The guy was wearing $100 Nikes, and a pair of $100 + Ray Bans. I was tempted to run him over every time I saw him.

There are others I could tell you about who you admire and are happy to have your money ridistributed to them, but I think that is a discussion better suited for the group, wouldn't you agree?

... isn't one of the chief complaints about Mexicans that they're "stealing" jobs?  If you're going to be consistent, then it shouldn't matter whether a Cuban gets a job or not.  After all, if he/she does, then they're just "stealing" an American job, right?
