Two law enforcement officers arrested for some serious stuff. The deputy in particular made nothing in comparison to the responsibility she had and the risks she was asked to take. When looking at these cases, I'd have to say that a better paycheck may have gone some way towards preventing this stuff from happening. Then again, sometimes people are just honest to goodness pieces of crap.

But yeah. Having the stress of running for election + only getting paid $37,000 kind of sucks. And it's not like being a sheriff is easy.

Apr 20, 2011 15:00:41 They need to just do honesty tests and sting "tests" to gauge the corruptibility of officials. You know go undercover and offer to bribe them and if they take it they get fired. Not only would it catch corrupt officials. If you knew that someone offering you a bribe could potentially be internal affairs (or whatever they call it) you are less likely to risk taking it...

Better pay can go at least a little way toward curbing corruption. Obviously that's not always the case, but I think when we're talking about a $20k salary it's reasonable to think it's really possible.

Yeah completely, except when you look at senators in the united states they get paid outrageous money and they still take money from corporations and vote their way, legal or not its corruption...

Down here in Miami dade County a brand new, fresh out of the packaging deputy-sheriff makes $40,932/year. Then they get to increase their pay depending on the types and number of certifications they get. Then they get pay increases every year.

I'm not sure how much the cheif makes, but if it is anything like the fire department's chief (and it is probably about the same), it is probably around $200,000/year. That's not even considering the number of years they have been with te department and all the other stuff they may have that qualifies them for pay increases.

Seriously. 37K/yr is pretty bad. Especially considering the ttype of work he probably has to do. If there is such a bad meth problem, I'm guessing it is probably pretty dangerous work... even if it's a small town.
