Beautiful creature, and I would absolutely hate to find myself out in the wild on the tiger's terms. Animals like lions and tigers and bears and sharks are proof that our position at the top of the food chain is a bit tenuous.

There's a couple of tigers at the Boise Zoo. Part of their enclosure is made of very thick tempered glass, so visitors can get a very close view of the cats. Apparently, they're used to being watched, but I harbor no illusions as to what they would do if they ever got out.

At the Lincoln Park zoo here in Chicago there is something very similar. You can actually get about 6 inches away from the lions. (I am guessing that the safety/plexiglass is about that thick.) One day I was there and one of the male lions was leaning against the glass, his back to it. On the other side was a group of young kids (about 10 years old) with a couple of adult teachers. A couple of the kids were pounding on the glass but the lion just ignored them, which made the kids pound harder. After a couple of minutes the lion, still not looking, let out a massive roar. Those kids scattered like a school of anchovies trying to avoid a seal! They went running everywhere. I felt sorry for the two teachers who had to round them up, but it was extremely funny. Nice to know that some instincts are still there, even if they are buried a bit deeply.

Feb 09, 2011 9:40:04 Wasn't there some fairly recent tiger shenanigans at a zoo? Like, the tiger got pissed at some kids hitting it with rocks and jumped the enclosure to get the prick. I believe he ate that bastard and attacked another. Went on a li'l rampage until a cop shot him, IIRC. Led to all sorts of zoos reevaluating their enclosures. ;)

While it is indeed a huge tragedy that she was killed, I can at least smile knowing that she took one Massengil with her and the other two probably (literally!) pissed and/or crapped themselves when that tiger got loose. If you are going to go down for someone else's stupidity then better you not go down alone.
