| #1cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 18:44:30 | Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have proved their worth as directors, Meet The Spartans is a monumentally witty film, with razor sharp humor that lampoons 300 like a spear. There can be no doubt, this is the greatest comedy movie of all time. |
| #2doneisiFeb 03, 2009 19:25:05 | Is this a joke? |
| #3cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 19:26:36 | Is this a joke? No. Meet the spartans is a most clever parody. Particularly its bold play on the homoerotic practices of the real spartans. |
| #4doneisiFeb 03, 2009 21:03:04 | No. Meet the spartans is a most clever parody. Particularly its bold play on the homoerotic practices of the real spartans. Cool. I may have to rent this then. Thanks. |
| #5cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 21:16:27 | Cool. I may have to rent this then. Thanks. I assure you, you will not be dissapointed if you do. |
| #6terronusFeb 03, 2009 21:29:41 | Well, its already been asked if this is a joke... so I'll just say this became one on accident. I'm not so articulate myself, so I differ to reviews that express my feelings about this piece of crap: Spill review.. Although the Disaster Movie review is much better. Korey is hilarious. My friend, I also differ to the critics: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/meet_the_spartans/ 2% of critics enjoyed this movie... and metacritic gave it an, "extreme dislike or disgust rating." You, sir, need to rethink your values when it comes to cinema. Edit: Particularly its bold play on the homoerotic practices of the real spartans. The real spartans weren't gay. The Athenians practiced homosexuality to a lesser extent; but the Spartans never did that I am aware of. Also, this has no sort of value when refering to the quality of the joke that is Meet the Spartans... in fact it stands against it for its historical inaccuracy. I differ you (approx.) to 1:30 of the spill review rather than reiterate the logic myself. |
| #7cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 21:45:14 | Well, its already been asked if this is a joke... so I'll just say this became one on accident. The spartans probably did practice homosexuality. In fact they may have been more gay than the Athenians. They spent most of their young adult life with other men, and were expected to "pair" with an older Spartan man during this time. They were called pedagogic erotic relationships. It actually created great difficulty for them when they were expected to get married. |
| #8terronusFeb 03, 2009 21:58:22 | Even if that were the case the film doesn't come close to making any sort of funny parody of their culture. Friedberg and Seltzer didn't know diddly about the spartan. I'll quote the review for the benefit of those that won't watch it Show This is a series of scenes taken from 300, then these two geniuses said, ‘what if we… made the characters gay?’ Who didn’t come out of 300 making a bunch of gay jokes? And I guarantee you 90% are more clever than this … movie here. This is, ‘Lets make a reference. It doesn’t have to be ironic. It doesn’t have to be insightful. It doesn’t even have to be funny.’ It’s just one pop culture reference after another … and the sad thing is they have no clever way of parodying these things. The fat guy from Borat turns into a giant transformer. Why? Well for no reason other than the fact that they have to find a way to mention the transformers. |
| #9cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 22:37:49 | Even if that were the case the film doesn't come close to making any sort of funny parody of their culture. Friedberg and Seltzer didn't know diddly about the spartan. I'll quote the review for the benefit of those that won't watch it |
| #10toastedamphibianFeb 03, 2009 23:09:35 | No, I'm pretty sure this is a sick, evil ploy to try and get hapless souls to actually watch that peice of trash. Good job. |
| #11cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 23:46:41 | No, I'm pretty sure this is a sick, evil ploy to try and get hapless souls to actually watch that peice of trash. It was no piece of trash it was a masterful piece of reductionist comedy. They managed to distill jokes to their most essential and basic elements, stark on the screen for all to behold. It was not just a paradody of 300, it was a commentary on humor itself. |
| #12toastedamphibianFeb 03, 2009 23:59:40 | Don't mistake incompetence for a grand goal. What you mean to say is that the jokes where very basic. Hey great, they managed to fill 180 minutes (I'm guessing, probably less, mabey more) with things that meet the base line pre-requiste of being a joke. |
| #13RamienFeb 04, 2009 0:10:40 | It was no piece of trash it was a masterful piece of reductionist comedy. They managed to distill jokes to their most essential and basic elements, stark on the screen for all to behold. It was not just a paradody of 300, it was a commentary on humor itself. Um, no. Just walk away. If that's your idea of a 'masterful piece' of anything, what do you consider some of the truly good parodies? Just about any of Mel Brook's work stands heads, shoulders, waist, knees, and ankles above that piece of... stuff. If you really want an actual masterful parody, look no further than Young Frankenstein. It managed to make fun of the original material while still both respecting it and telling a good story all its own. |
| #14cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 0:21:06 | Um, no. Just walk away. If that's your idea of a 'masterful piece' of anything, what do you consider some of the truly good parodies? But there is so much needless detail in Young Frankenstein...so much build up to cultural references or punchlines. Meet the Spartans just takes you right there. Britney spears singing at the hole of death. Bamn! Cultural Reference! Spartan men Kissing each other and giving their women high fives. Bamn! Punchline, 300 was one of the gayest movies ever. Spartans and the Persian army doing the Dozens with another. Bamn! Unexpected zaniness. No build up, no wasted dialogue. Comedy at its most fundamental level. |
| #15cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 0:22:16 | Don't mistake incompetence for a grand goal. It was 84 minutes of triumph! |
| #16dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 0:56:28 | It was one of the worst movies I've seen. It was so bad I couldn't see it all the way through, for fear of my sanity. Agreed. Real parody comedies are the works of Mel Brooks, which are just genius in design. And because they are jokes about specific things in pop culture they will no longer be funny in a few years once every one has gotten over and forgotten about these things. Meet The Spartans is an example of how bad comedy has gotten in recent years. |
| #17strudel_lumpycakesFeb 04, 2009 0:59:02 | I assure you, you will not be dissapointed if you do. I must echo this sentiment. With all the crap flowing out of Hollywood these days, I was expecting another insipid 90 minutes of recycled jokes. Needless to say, I was blown away. By the time the credits rolled, I had laughed till my stomach hurt and tears stained my cheeks. With quivering legs, I hoisted myself to the standing position and began to applaud. A man in the far back joined in, tentative at first. Then a woman to my right. Then an elderly gentleman in the front. Soon the whole theater roared with applause and whoops of exhilaration. When the house lights finally came up, I felt like I had been witness to the end on an era, similar to viewing Revenge of the Sith, or Return of the King. Just kidding. It was actually the most painful movie-going experience of my life. I destroyed my ticket and any evidence that I ever attended. People who actually enjoyed that movie make me angry. It's a sickness. I would rather take a knife to my arms and chest before getting near that compost heap again (I'm serious). The world never deserved this. I try to be an understanding and easygoing person, but I have to draw the line somewhere. |
| #18toastedamphibianFeb 04, 2009 2:31:02 | Oh thank god. You scared me there for a minute lumpy. |
| #19terronusFeb 04, 2009 3:20:54 | Silver Streak or A Fish Called Wanda is a parody. So is Shaun of the Dead or Galaxy Quest. Meet the Spartans is a worthless piece of trash. Friedberg and Seltzer should go . Hell, Lumpy had a better written parody which was his post (and I mean that wholeheartedly, when I read it altogether I started cracking up! Nicely done!) |
| #20Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 7:11:19 | NO DON'T WATCH THIS GARBAGE! Seriously Meet The Spartans and all of it's Scary Movie kind are HORRIBLE. Infact, they're 99 percent of the reason why I'm convinced that movie comedy is impossible. You obviously don't know what comedy is, it's supposed to you know. Make you Laugh. Furthermore you are -supposed to build up to your punchlines- not just throw them out there and get a "ehehehe heh heh " type of laugh out of them (The "Dear ****ing god I can't believe I was stupid enough to rent this movie, I'm only laughing so I don't cry" laugh) There is no "getting" the joke of this movie. Because there is nothing to "get" Getting implies some form of sophistication or some form of building up to the joke. Getting implies that there is some kind of story to go along with the joke that you have to understand on some level to -really get a laugh out of it.- There is none of this in MTS. It's not even funny in a slapstick kind of way, this movie just fails on so many levels. It fails on Delivery, and it Fails in Execution. If you want to know what a real Comedy is watch Zombie Strippers. |
| #21doneisiFeb 04, 2009 7:51:01 | So, it was a trick. Cotton Mather, you sir will pay for your deceitful ways; somehow in some way. Mark my words. |
| #22cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 9:15:45 | Furthermore you are -supposed to build up to your punchlines- not just throw them out there and get a "ehehehe heh heh " type of laugh out of them (The "Dear ****ing god I can't believe I was stupid enough to rent this movie, I'm only laughing so I don't cry" laugh) There is no "getting" the joke of this movie. Because there is nothing to "get" So says the elitist white power structure. Meet the Spartans is a challenge to established notions of comedy. And an attempt to get to its very core. It upholds the aesthetics of the inner city, and disdains the aesthetics of the ivory tower. |
| #23Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 9:21:39 | So says the elitist white power structure. Meet the Spartans is a challenge to established notions of comedy. And an attempt to get to its very core. It upholds the aesthetics of the inner city, and disdains the aesthetics of the ivory tower. You really are a forum troll sheesh. No, it isn't a "challenge to comedy" not in the slightest. It's following the same insipid lame trend that's been going on since Scary Movie. It follows this format which is considered apparently by Hollywood movie big wigs a cash cow and the standard for Movie Comedy. (Probably because they are so cheap to make it's just that hard for the movie to be considered a flop.) There's nothing new here, the jokes are stale and old and have been for years. It's like someone took a bunch of -bad- stand up comedians told them to write a movie, falling asleep, waking up in the Twilight Zone and seeing this crap being some how popular. It wasn't funny then, and it sure as hell ain't funny however many years later it's been. Next thing you'll be telling us is some how it's "keeping it real" and being "Down against the man who've been holding us gangstas down!" |
| #24cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 9:26:21 | You really are a forum troll sheesh. I don't think you even watched Meet the Spartans. |
| #25Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 9:28:16 | Oh I did. It's exactly as I described it. Scary Movie... no wait.. scratch that. Scary Movie 3, making fun of 300. The only thing that's missing are the actors from Scary Movie's chain. |
| #26dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 9:28:23 | Stop being delusional. Meet the Spartans is a horrible movie. |
| #27cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 9:47:24 | Stop being delusional. Meet the Spartans is a horrible movie. Are you serious? Meet the Spartans was nominated for multiple awards. It was a truly good movie. Perhaps it is less appealing to white audiences, that I can grant, but I was in stitches throughout. |
| #28zombie_babiesFeb 04, 2009 9:49:17 | I'm just glad I was intelligent enough to avoid watching this colon abortion. |
| #29Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 9:49:50 | Are you serious? Meet the Spartans was nominated for multiple awards. It was a truly good movie. Perhaps it is less appealing to white audiences, that I can grant, but I was in stitches throughout. Stop being racist. It's less appealing to anyone with a non stoned at the time brain in their skull. It's a Stoner Comedy. Meaning to find it funny you have to be High. In which case just about anything's funny anyway. |
| #30dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 9:50:09 | Hollywood is full of idiots. Nominations mean nothing and Hollywood often gives awards to movies that never deserve them. |
| #31cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 9:54:59 | Stop being racist. How am I being racist? You are the one deriding comedy that is more appealing to us black folk. You probably didn't like the movie Barber Shop either. Or Malcolm X. Or Boyz N the Hood. Guess what, we thought Being John Malcovich was terrible. |
| #32dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 9:56:05 | Being John Malcovich is terrible and so are all the other movies you mentioned. |
| #33mircolesFeb 04, 2009 9:57:36 | I found the movie (Meet the Spartans) unimpressive. |
| #34zombie_babiesFeb 04, 2009 9:58:13 | I am fully aware of what's going on here, but I'll play anyway. How, exactly, is Meet the Spartans a "movie that appeals to black folk"? |
| #35Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 10:00:04 | Are you serious? Meet the Spartans was nominated for multiple awards. It was a truly good movie. Perhaps it is less appealing to white audiences, that I can grant, but I was in stitches throughout. You brought up race. Not me. Sorry there's not "Black humor" or "White Humor" there's only humor, or Stoner Humor. MTS is quite frankly Stoner Humor. It's not slapstick, it's not story comedy, it's not a parody. No it relies on it's audience being blitzed out of their skulls to find it funny. I've not seen those movies (aside from Boyz N The Hood which I've not seen in a very long time.. but from that horrible title alone I'm willing to bet it sucks. ). |
| #36cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:01:10 | You brought up race. Not me. Then I can only conclude you have never been around real black people. Trust me, we got a different sense of humor than you guys. |
| #37dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 10:01:50 | I am fully aware of what's going on here, but I'll play anyway. I'd say that much of pop culture is based off of the american black culture and since the movie references pop culture a lot it has a lot of black culture references. I probably shouldn't call them references because they aren't referred to but instead thrown at us with pure desperation. There needs to be more movies like Blazing Saddles or Space Balls. |
| #38cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:04:06 | I am fully aware of what's going on here, but I'll play anyway. Primarily because it lampoons white movies (300, Transformers, Ghost Rider, etc. It is more crude, there is less build up, and it relies on more slap stick. Also, it features use of the dozens (when the spartans meet and get into a 'yo mamma' war with the persians). |
| #39dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 10:07:23 | Most of the things that the movie made fun of are stupid. Half of the movies it made fun of were stupid, all of the shows it made fun of are stupid, and all of the pop culture people that it made fun of are stupid. Making fun of stupid things that aren't worth the time of day is stupid and made of fail. |
| #40Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 10:08:23 | Primarily because it lampoons white movies (300, Transformers, Ghost Rider, etc. It is more crude, there is less build up, and it relies on more slap stick. Also, it features use of the dozens (when the spartans meet and get into a 'yo mamma' war with the persians). Wow, not only are you twisted you are racist. Now those movies are White Movies? that some how only white people like those movies? I'll have to tell that to my darker skin toned friends that they've been "doing it wrong" for all of these years. |
| #41zombie_babiesFeb 04, 2009 10:10:01 | There needs to be more movies like Blazing Saddles or Space Balls. Too true. I doubt we'll ever see anything like those again, though. Primarily because it lampoons white movies (300, Transformers, Ghost Rider, etc. It is more crude, there is less build up, and it relies on more slap stick. Also, it features use of the dozens (when the spartans meet and get into a 'yo mamma' war with the persians). So what you're saying is that black people want to watch a bunch of white guys gay-off and don't want anything complicated in their humor? Umm ... What makes 300, Transformers, Ghost Rider, etc "white movies"? I'm white and I've only seen Transformers. And that was only because it was on at the party I was at. My black friends actually liked all three of those movies. I guess I just can't see a racial divide in the movies you listed. |
| #42cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:13:29 | Wow, not only are you twisted you are racist. What is racist i snot acknowledging that there are movies black people like and white people don't (in general). True this really breaks down on class lines; but when you are black, class lines and race lines pretty much look the same. You may have a dark skinned friend who doesn't share the taste of the majority of black people in this country (either because he was raised in the suburbs or he was a nerd growing up). That doesn't change that most of us have significantly different taste than you guys, and it is a little offensive for you to dismiss that claim by calling me a racist. |
| #43Cpt_MichaFeb 04, 2009 10:15:39 | Next you'll be telling us BET is quality television and that white people just don't "get it" nor the "black community" which often says it's every bit as bad as the racism that went on in the 60s in how it portrays people of their "ethnicity" and insults people of "non colored skin". Your racist because you seem to think skin color defines your tastes and styles. I'm color blind. |
| #44cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:16:32 | Too true. I doubt we'll ever see anything like those again, though. What I am saying is we like making fun of white movies, and yes we prefer simplicity because overly complex or "sophisticated" humor strikes us as elitist. You have to understand, for most black folk that weren't raised in the suburbs, these all are White Movies. 300 because it uses language we would never use. Ghost Rider because it is comic book and has nicolos cage. And transformers because we didn't watch transformers growing up, or get transformers on our birthdays. Those kinds of toys are for white people cause they are too expensive. |
| #45dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 10:17:42 | What is racist i snot acknowledging that there are movies black people like and white people don't (in general). It isn't class lines but cultural lines, and to perpetuate said lines is racist for many see them as racial lines too. People always see these lines as race lines, which they aren't, instead of just cultural lines that they grew up within. |
| #46cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:18:28 | Next you'll be telling us BET is quality television and that white people just don't "get it" nor the "black community" which often says it's every bit as bad as the racism that went on in the 60s in how it portrays people of their "ethnicity" and insults people of "non colored skin". BET might not be your idea of quality, but lots of black people like it. When I was in college, we used to all watch it in the campus hall (all us black students), and at the barber shop I like to go to, either BET or ESPN is on the TV. I don't know what black people you are hanging out with, but my guess is they are either on the far left and really politically correct, and/or grew up in the suburbs. |
| #47cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:19:39 | It isn't class lines but cultural lines, and to perpetuate said lines is racist for many see them as racial lines too. People always see these lines as race lines, which they aren't, instead of just cultural lines that they grew up within. I love it. White people have advanced so far, that there is no longer need for distinct cultures on race lines when it suits them. It is just like bell hooks said. Just when we are in position to get to the table and bang our fists, the post modernists declare there is no longer a table at all. Got to love it. I got news for you. You grow up black in America, chances are it was in the inner city. I grew up in Dorchester, where my friends were shot and the police used to keep us down. THat is what has shaped black culture my friend. And its real. It is apparent to me every day I meet white people. Not all. SOme grew up in the inner city to. But 9 times out of 10, not the case. |
| #48dirtyfrankFeb 04, 2009 10:20:48 | What I am saying is we like making fun of white movies, and yes we prefer simplicity because overly complex or "sophisticated" humor strikes us as elitist. It's not elitist because it's sophisticated. Elitist stuff says that it is better and that others should conform to it and it is done equally within each cultural community. |
| #49cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:23:12 | It's not elitist because it's sophisticated. Elitist stuff says that it is better and that others should conform to it and it is done equally within each cultural community. It is elitist because it references things that only white people would get mostly. And, yes, there is the implication of superioty because it is coded language. If you don't get the reference you are out of the group and not as smart. And I have seen more than one white person say just as much to me when I didn't get the reference. |
| #50zombie_babiesFeb 04, 2009 10:24:12 | What I am saying is we like making fun of white movies, and yes we prefer simplicity because overly complex or "sophisticated" humor strikes us as elitist. Is there a definition of "white movie" or is it something that depends on specific content elements? Is there a definition of "black movie" or is it something that depends on specific content elements? Why would black kids not watch Transformers as children? All white people could/can afford expensive toys? EDIT: A couple more: How did the police "keep you down"? Define "coded language" and give an example or two, please. |
| #51cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:28:51 | Is there a definition of "white movie" or is it something that depends on specific content elements? Just another example of you guys saying the table doesn't exist. The first two questions are just an attempt to eliminate black and white through linguistics, so I wont answer them. 1) We just didn't watch transformers as kids. It wasn't our thing. And we we couldn't afford the toys. 2)I never said all whtie people. Here is what I am saying, Most white people could afford them; most black people couldn't. 3) Keep us down by setting curfews and picking on us. To them, every black person is a gangster. 4) I already defined it for. There are plenty of examples out there. |
| #52rakeFeb 04, 2009 10:31:54 | Um. Time out. Cottonmather, dude. You're white. I've seen your picture in Astrid's. EDIT: Your picture is right here. My guess is that this entire thread was a joke from Post #1? |

| #60rakeFeb 04, 2009 10:49:28 | I am half black. Makes me black bro. Okay, so when you say you're half-spanish, you mean that you're half black and half spanish? Sorry for the confusion then, but when the question is 'are you black', stating that you're half-spanish doesn't help to answer. |
| #61cottonmatherFeb 04, 2009 10:50:20 | Okay, so when you say you're half-spanish, you mean that you're half black and half spanish? I am half spanish, half black, yes. And light skinned. But I got a fro, a ghetto booty, big lips and a wide nose. Never been black enough for blacks, or 'white' enough for whites. |

The Golden Raspberry Awards, frequently called the Razzies, were created by John Wilson in 1980 (and first awarded in 1981), intended to counterpoint the Academy Awards by dishonoring (or honoring) the worst acting, screenwriting, songwriting, directing, and films that the film industry had to offer. |

| #64bob_loblawFeb 04, 2009 11:12:11 | Cool. I may have to rent this then. Thanks. If you love yourself you won't do this. Meet the Spartans has been known to cause cancer. For the love of all that is pure and holy, save yourself the pain you will bring on your loved ones. Do not watch this movie. I was ready to surrender my will to live after only 30 minutes. The Geneva Convention is supposed to protect us from this type of inhumane treatment. I would rather have an HCl drip on my open eyeballs than sit through this again. I believe that A Clockwork Orange could have used footage from this movie had it been made at that time. Think of the children. If you watch this movie you will no longer have the desire to procreate. It sucks the joy right out of your soul. Even Satan himself said it's just too mean to subject humans to something this evil. |

Do not horde the pleasure of Meet the Spartans to youself. It was a great movie, and worth every penny to view. You will cling to each of its 84 for minutes, hoping it will never end. |
