I happen to like the Dragonlance elves. I thought that they made sense as a fantasy race, even if they weren't always likeable. The point was that they were often threatened by the other races, so they retreated into their own lands and were wary of outsiders. It's pretty much based off of LotR elves. They are inaccessable to all but the most trusted members of other races, if you really think about it, and the elves in Lothlorien were very isolationist.
Haven't read Eragon, so I don't know.
I also liked the different subraces of elves in 3.x. I think that there were some sources that had a few too many, such as Unearthed Arcana, but then again, Unearthed Arcana had too many subraces of all of the common races. I personally like the idea of having a wide variety of elves, just as there is a wide variety of humans.
I don't know if I'd call myself a fangirl, but I do like elves. I like them for real reasons, however, and I don't go crazy talking about "teh HAWT elf bois!" or anthing like that. I just happen to like their culture and racial persona.

Umm, IIRC, humans have only a few subraces (just like all the other PHB races) while elves haev at least 10-14. (and I own tons of 3E stuff, so I know what I'm talking about!)
I only like the savage, barbaric elves. The magic users just seem like a bunch of pansy mary sues. Their culture is irritating with it's "I'm better than everything that is not an elf" crap.

I think you are only looking at the negative aspects of the "high" elven culture. Yes, they can be pompous (sometimes, not always), but they have amazing magical artistry, they have beautiful arts, and they live harmoniously with nature. On second thought, based on what dirtyfrank was arguing in another thread, that is probably too "girly" for you.
The Silvanesti refused to let the dragon orb go to the humans, they wanted to keep it safe instead of using to save everyone. They tried to kill anyone who disagreed with them.
That's what I'm talking about. When one of those dragon overlords went and killed all the elves, I was like "YESSS!"
Better for one race to have multiple cultures than twenty with the same one.
Do elves brutally kill their enemies god of war style? NO. Because they ARE PANSIES. They are not metal enough for me. As for beautiful artistry and living harmoniusly with nature, I think that Goliaths did as well, but they're cool.
The Silvanesti were often portrayed as wanting to stay out of the conflict, which is a perfectly common portrayal of elves. Elves are few in number and not as fertile as other races, so wars are far more devastating to them. They are also very patient and they tend to be avoidant towards others, which means that they will most likely try to wait out any bad situation and if the bad guys come into power, they will try to hide. It isn't necessarily the best way to handle things, but for a race that is few in number, it is important to protect your people at all costs.
The elves don't all have the same culture. Look at the Realms, for instance. The sun elves are the annoying royal magician type that you have said you don't like. They are often portrayed as being secretly evil and xenophobic. The wild elves are very reclusive and hardly ever encountered. They have played only minor roles in the greater history of the elves. The wood elves are the "everyone's aquaintance" subrace. They are found in most elven settlements, and they have a few of their own. They have rarely stood out on their own in the greater history of the elves, but they have often worked in conjunction with either the moon or sun elves. The moon elves are the everyman of the elves. They are the wanderers, the diplomats, the dabblers. They are most likely to form ties with other races. The sea elves are the carefree cousins of the surface elves. The sky elves are the elves who have been nearly hunted to extinction and have been in hiding for most of their time on Faerun. I could keep going on and on, but you are probably getting bored by now.
Sometimes elves are brutal. Several of them have made pacts with demons, some even having bred with them. They aren't always Mr. Nice Guy. Goliaths are entirely different from elves. Elves are the epitomy of the mixture of civilization and nature. They are highly civilized and educated, but they also live in perfect harmony with the natural world.

I think that it is perfectly realistic to have a race that basically worships nature, but is highly civilized. It means that they are smart enough to see that nature is what is sustaining them and that if they want civilization to continue, they're going to have to treat their surroundings with respect. The main reason why I like elves so much is because I am very much both the scholarly and the tree-hugger type. I love nature, but I also love learning, and I think the elves are the ideal combination of the two.

I love flawed characters whatever race they are and in a lot of fantasy elves are flawed in severe ways like wishing to be left out of the wars and such that plague the land. Most of the time it is because they have fought those battles before and have learned that with time everything will pass. It is a side effect of their near immortality. 700 hundred years is a long time for a person to live and by the end they have seen damn near everything there is to see.

In some (many) settings, yes, those are elves. I dislike that trope because my elves are different. After all, nomadic Tribes of hunter-gatherers who raid settlements and still generally fight for good (okay, their own Tribes' best interests), whose hunting parties kill any strangers they find in their territory (or at best haul the intruder back to camp for questioning, followed by the captive often being sacrificed in bloody rites), and who venerate nature spirits are way more interesting (imho) than prissy, too-clean, arcane-magic-worshipping, androgynous Mary Sues.

Mialee was an experiment. She was an attempt by the developers to break away from the "all elves are pretty girls/boys" trope. The attempt failed because we just ain't ready for that.

I believe that Lidda and Mialee are suppose to have the same charisma score. In 3e cha didn't really mean much towards looks but it seems like a low cha for Mialee meant she'd be butt ass ugly but for Lidda she'd become hot as hell.

Actually, if you see cha as purely a measure of looks, which it isn't, then the art was done wrong. If the art was done right and cha is to be seen as mostly social skills then this means that Mialee is both ugly and socially awkward and Lidda is beautiful and socially awkward. What this would mean is that Lidda is either extremely shy (socially out of place) or she's an absolute ass (people avoid her).
