Minimalist Boots

So for any minimalist runners out there, does anyone know of a good minimalist boot? More specifically, one that falls within Army regs so I can wear it in uniform (so the vibram five-toe boots are out)?

For anyone that has any ideas, here are the standards the boots must meet.

-Must be 8-10 inches in height
-Must be made of tan rough side out cattlehide leather with a plain toe
-Must have a tan rubber outsole

I've seen sites that offered ways to convert regular boots but if I can I'd rather just be able to buy some boots and be done with it.

Sorry I want new boots, not something borrowed from your wardrobe.

They should be within the required standards.

By the way, if you just want to mess around, you can always go with these.

I was all "WTF? Winter boot?" Then I saw that he's from Seattle and I was all "oh..."

Compared to othe minimalist shoes, those are pretty much winter boots.

True. I guess you don't get to be a minimalist footwear person when it's -40? Actually, I suppose caribou or seal mukluks would still be fairly minimalist, and Cree/Inuit wore those in this weather and worse for centuries.

Yeah no, -40 is definitely not minimalist weather. Fortunately for me, the only time I see weather below 50 is on TV.
As for the mukluks... not the current ones out ther... at least not the ones I've been able to find through Google. The soles look way too thick. I could be wrong, but yeah, they seem like pretty chunky boot-things.

Unfortunately neither of those work for me. They are black. I need them to be tan.

Before I forget, I have heard that soft star will make the books with whatever color you want. I hear their customer service is awesome like that.

Do they make a laced version? I didn't see any other boots on that link. The Army is ridiculously picky, no zippers (yeah why would you want your quick reaction forces and emergency responders to be able to get their boots on faster?), must be tan, suede, etc etc. At least they aren't the black ones that people wanted shined all the time even if you were out on the range.

Not sure, but they do have shoes with laces, so I don't see why they wouldn't make boots with laces.

If it wasn't for all the silly pickiness of the military, I'd say go with the VFF Bornios. THey have them in tan. If it wasn't for the toes, and worse, the zippper, they'd be perfect.

Yeah, most store bought mukluks are going to be normal style boots, but if you go out to the reserve shops you can get hand made that are traditional style with a 'soft' (double-layer) bottom. They obviously don't last as long as a rubber sole, but you'd get a lot more ground feel.

Here's a classic style mukluk, though these are made of decorative leathers rather than what you'd want for deep cold (namely seal leather to keep the water out).

Of course I'm figuring that the important features of "minimalist footwear" are flexibility, how natural the foot step is, and ground feel. Deep cold footwear has to make a compromise in bulk for sheer insulation purposes, but I think these are as close as you're going to get.

Oh God!
I hated those damn boots! We even had to shine the pair we wore on field problems! WTF?

And there were plenty of (edited: Inappropriate content) that managed to climb the ranks because even though they didn't know the basics of their job, they would show up every day with shined boots and a starched uniform.

So my unit issued me a pair of these store.nike.com/us/en_us/?l=shop,pdp,ctr-...

They aren't true minimalist boots, but probably as close as I'm going to get for now. The heel-to-toe drop isn't nearly as extreme as most boots, and the sole (well the entire boot really) is much softer and more flexible than any other military boots I've worn.

Not bad. I would imagine that the ground feel isn't going to be the best, but that's probably going to be a plus considering the types of environments you are likely to deal with. They actually don't look too bad either.

Yeah it's certainly not the same, but it's still better than the boots I had. It's probably the rough equivalent of a Nike Free. Not a true minimalist shoe, but still a step over regular shoes.

Heh...
I got a few funny Army stories pertaining to starching uniforms and shining those blasted black boots...

Remind me and maybe I'll share them in the OTT Cave

THat's good. Nike Frees aren't bad. They allow your foot to move much better than the standard sneakers, and they have a better toe box. THey may not be true minimalist shoes, but they serve their purpose.

Hopefully they work out well for you.
