| #1darnanMar 19, 2012 15:23:04 | Well just figured I would put out this topic. Does anyone play (or has played in the past) any MMOs? Which ones? And did you like them? I've played several. I have a sub to Star Wars: The Old Republic, but haven't played in a while. I'm kind of a big World of Warcraft player so I mostly play that when I'm playing an MMO. I've played EQ, DDO, LOTRO, Guild Wars, and several others, and I played RIFT since they handed out free copies and GenCon last year . |
| #2draco1119Mar 19, 2012 18:35:26 | I have. It's called 4E. Maybe you've heard of it? |
| #3homicidal_squirrelMar 19, 2012 18:40:01 | I heard of it... or more accurately, I heard the sound it made going in the trash. |
| #4Cpt_MichaMar 19, 2012 18:41:19 | Now now Draco that was below the belt. As a veteran mmo player, I can safely tell you there's really no more correlation between D&D and MMOs than there has ever been. 4e sucks worse than all but the wannabes. Like anything made by Cryptic The problem is, 4e was too safe. And 5e is looking like nothing but fail made by a company that has no grasp of game mechanics that work. There is a 4e MMO being developed by LOLCryptic. I mean Cryptic. The makers of some of the worst mmos on the market. Wtf was Wizards thinking there is beyond my understanding. (That's right Neverwinter went from being a potential Rival to Diablo 3, to being a worthless f2p azn wanna be mmo) As for the original topic. I'm a veteran of WOW. (which I gave up on after playing -good- mmos. Wow is archaic in every aspect and gawd does it show) I've got a starwars sub, and a sub to RIFT (which I enjoy tremendously. It's what wow thinks it is), and I play STO for the lulz since it went f2p. I really wish D&D would look to RIFT for class system inspiration. It's truly Glorious for RIFT. No 50 billion classes cluttering up the system. A warrior is a warrior at the end of the day. If he happens to be slinging thunder, fire, ice or causing earthquakes in combat is supplementary to what he knows at heart. |
| #5trappedsliderMar 19, 2012 18:53:53 | Well just figured I would put out this topic. Does anyone play (or has played in the past) any MMOs? Which ones? And did you like them? ?BEfore this goes wildly away from the OP topic I currently play WoW and I sitll enjoy it, I've tried SWTOR via the free trial and well it didn't make me want to get a sub or get the game due to a number of things that didn't jive with me. Like the constently voice acting, I perfer to read than hear what i'm supposed to go do next But that it's selling point so yeah, the graphics were okay. I hear that the orginial EQ is going F2P |
| #6draco1119Mar 19, 2012 18:58:28 | Of course, there's also some advantage in not having warriors and wizards function in the same way. Unless someone can teach me to cast spells by swinging a metal stick. Behold! I played WoW a couple of times. Wasn't impressed, though I <3 Warcraft 2 & 3. I used to play Acheron's Call for a bit; that one was decent. |
| #7homicidal_squirrelMar 19, 2012 19:03:35 | I played WoW for like 10 minutes. Got bored. Also, people you meet online are annoying. (Content removed) (ORC_Chaos: Edited-Trolling is against the Code of Conduct) |
| #8bone_nagaMar 19, 2012 19:38:41 | I've played Guild Wars. Other than that, I don't really bother. GW doesn't charge per month so I don't feel bad if I don't get my money's worth. No pay per month MMOs and no DDI subscription. |
| #9EscherEnigmaMar 19, 2012 20:42:16 | Um... Everquest Dark Ages of Camelot City of Hero/Villains World of Warcraft DC Universe Star Wars: the Old Republic Played World of Warcraft for the longest stretch. Currently only playing Star Wars: the Old Republic. At the moment it's looking like I'm gonna end up dropping the subscription in a few months unless they change it up to make it more consistently interesting. |
| #10pigknightMar 19, 2012 22:09:30 | WoW: Found it boring after you hit max level. Guild Wars: Pretty good. But single player was very meh. Diablo II: Great game. Hack-n-slash. Dungeon Runners: Class-less Diablo II clone. Tons of fun. Great humor. Now gone. Runes of Magic: Fun, but kind of tedious. I might get back into it. League of Legends: Play a lot. Fun, but learning wall. Upcoming: Diablo III: Gettin' on that. Guild Wars II: Human Mesmer - [Greatsword] and [Sword/Pistol]. |
| #11jetshieldMar 19, 2012 22:20:33 | Asheron's Call - loved it...still consider re-subbing on occasion. Tank Archer 4tw! Best loot system of any MMORPG I've played. Shadowbane - loved it too, even with the bugs. Still waiting for a server emu to be finished so I can play again. CoH/Cov - meh. Was fun in small doses. Since it went F2P I've logged in a couple times. Guild Wars - Wasn't terribly impressed. WoW - vanilla was fun for a while. Haven't played the new xpac (cataclysm?) and have no particular desire to. I only played as long as I did because I had a bunch of friends playing and sending them a /t in-game was the only way to get their attention sometimes (even if you were in the same room :rolleyes ![]() Rift - played the trial for about an hour. Nuff said. SW:TOR - Being a fan of the KOTOR games, I couldn't help but like it. This game has great potential, but needs more content to hold my interest as it stands. There were others I've played, but they couldn't have made much of an impression if I can't remember which ones they were. |
| #12trappedsliderMar 19, 2012 22:36:41 | This mmom has me itnerested sicne it's setting is the modern world and it sounds a bit like a setting that i ran using D20modern www.thesecretworld.com/gameplay |
| #13Rizzen9Mar 20, 2012 1:13:54 | My first mmo was Star Wars Galaxies and I still love it to this day. I was a veteran player the first 2 years until SOE screwed it up beyond repair. I sometimes hop on the emulator for nostalgic reasons lol. Then went to WOW for 3 years off and on until I got burnt out on it for the last time. Played a little Eve for bit. Did the Beta for DDO and a lil here and there when i get bored. lotro but i cant stand it and played Warhammer which had potential but for some reason felt l wow to me? I'm now playing Star Wars The Old Republic and enjoying it. Like any mmo, its new and has its issues but will get better as major patches are added and i cant wait until the next patch. |
| #14Cpt_MichaMar 20, 2012 7:06:58 | Really? I heard the nice crackly sound it made in a bonfire. Nah, 4e books don't burn very well. The waxy covering on the pages you know. God no. 3.5 was a total wreck of a system. As for it's supposed flexibility, much of that was a lie. Hell at least -one- of the classes was totally unworkable at high level *cough* Rogue *cough*. You can have everyone function on the same power system, and have a huge amount of flexibility. Exalted, Star Wars Saga, Savage Worlds, and Eclipse Phase prove that. D&D in general is the Budwieser of RPGS, it's there for people that don't know better. Someone clearly has never seen a BladeSinger, or Spellblade before. Or hell numerous Blade and Spell warriors in tv, literature and movies. You just haven't found the right one. Hell your computer can't even play any good ones. So yeah. :-p |
| #15Cpt_MichaMar 20, 2012 7:09:23 |
What class did you play? And which faction? Also when did you pick the game up? And did you pvp at all? I -know- you didn't do any Dungeons... otherwise you'd have been hooked. |
| #16draco1119Mar 20, 2012 8:20:01 | Someone clearly has never seen a BladeSinger, or Spellblade before. Or hell numerous Blade and Spell warriors in tv, literature and movies. The 3.5 Bladesinger was nerfed hard, and the Spellsowrd wasn't much better. They were some of the first non-Core PrCs printed, back when WotC thought that a full BAB made up for 1/2 casting levels. They learned by the time the Abjurant Champion, Heir of Siberys, and Bone Knight came out, but by hten it was too late for my favorite 2E kit. ![]() |
| #17zombie_babiesMar 20, 2012 9:11:50 | I played UO a lot back in the day. I'd still be playin' today, too, if the free shard I was on was still up. I also tried DDO. Man was that game terrible. |
| #18missbehaveMar 20, 2012 9:50:30 | Well just figured I would put out this topic. Does anyone play (or has played in the past) any MMOs? Which ones? And did you like them? I played WoW for years, I LOVE it.. but my good computer broke =( this one cant handle it.. I have not played since the new stuff came out... I am so mad/sad about it. Now all I have is D&D on saturday nights..... which I love as well, its just not the same! |
| #19jetshieldMar 20, 2012 10:50:43 |
I played some rogue thing, IIRC. On the "bad guy" side...Rift's version of the Horde, I guess. Rift is just a WoW clone with less polish than WoW. Rift PvP can in no way stand up to Shadowbane, and I loathe the now-popular "find-a-group-of-internet-nitwits-and-12-year-old-nettards-to-kill-stuff-in-an-instanced-dungeon-and-hope-they-don't-suck-or-you'll-have-wasted-2 hours-to-get-nowhere" dungeon systems. |
| #20zombie_babiesMar 20, 2012 13:48:22 | I also LOVE WoW. I love DnD, but WoW is the thing I prefere to get my dose of fantasy. A hunter, troll, was my favorite toon. Careful, champ. I'm pretty sure I know who she is and, if I'm right, her name is Sophie Marie. |
| #21zombie_babiesMar 20, 2012 14:00:58 | Nope. |
| #22Cpt_MichaMar 20, 2012 19:16:17 | I played some rogue thing, IIRC. On the "bad guy" side...Rift's version of the Horde, I guess. Rift is just a WoW clone with less polish than WoW. That surprises me. Rogue was one of the more fun classes for me. the one I couldn't get into was Mage and Cleric. I'm just not wired for that sort of thing in electronic games. I still prefer my Warrior though. If only cause I like being a teleporting, mana and spell destroying dps machine that sets fire, to things, electrocutes them, freezes them, or knocks them the hell out. <3 me some Riftblade and Void Knight ![]() That doesn't really help much. There really isn't a "bad guy" in RIFT other than Regulos. The Defiants and Guardians are just two fundamentally opposed factions (though the Guardians are actually more evil. That whole religious fanatic thing you know) Trion, spent alot of time on the Lore for Telara (the setting of RIFT) and it really shows if you took the time to read it. Funny, I think the opposite. Wow is an old hack that thinks it has talent only relevant cause it has followers. RIFT has -far- more polish than wow at this point. (hell even at launch it was better) it's combat system is borked, and sluggish, it's class mechanics heinously outdated, same with it's gameplay variety. I can count on one hand how many times I've failed on a dungeon and have 3 fingers to spare. Course... RIFT's community isn't retarded like WOW's is and I play on pvp servers. |
| #23Cpt_MichaMar 20, 2012 19:21:41 | Nope. You're casting the spell while holding a weapon. Not like the fighter healing himself with his swords. Rule 1 is true, however you need a good deal more accelerant with 4e books than other books. You missed the point like a true 3.5er always does CJ ;) My point was fiction, and D&D is replete with those that blend spell and blade together. Also Rogues Suck. Hard Core especially in the core phb. Given that everything you face that's even remotely iconic is auto immune to your sneak attacks. "but splat fixes some of this!" yes.. if you blew feats, to gain it against one monster group at a time... or worse PRC levels. The only thing the Rogue was good at and this was only semi good was the Diplomancer. And then the bard did it Better. I know how to min max 3.5 and make the concept work. There's your first problem. You're assuming you're going to be playing with annoying people. Second, your computer is ancient. So ancient infact that your rig probably thinks twice about firing up WOW which has an infamously Stupid community across the gaming world. |
| #24bone_nagaMar 20, 2012 20:08:18 | I also LOVE WoW. I love DnD, but WoW is the thing I prefere to get my dose of fantasy. A hunter, troll, was my favorite toon. RM, no scaring off potential new OTTers. |
| #25draco1119Mar 20, 2012 20:12:11 | Of course, there's also some advantage in not having warriors and wizards function in the same way. Unless someone can teach me to cast spells by swinging a metal stick. You're moving the goalposts. All you asked for was to to be taught "to cast spells by swinging a metal stick". I did so. If you want a melee warrior who can heal himself by swinging a sword, then I would direct you to the Crusader in the Tome of Battle. |
| #26EscherEnigmaMar 20, 2012 21:11:05 | Shadowbane - loved it too, even with the bugs. Still waiting for a server emu to be finished so I can play again. Forgot about that one. I really dug the backstory of it (my first real roleplaying was on the Shadowbane forums while the game was in beta) but when the game came out I discovered how much I really don't have the mentality to PvP. Didn't help that I wasn't social enough to get into the whole city building thing. Still, really dug the backstory of it. |
| #27EscefMar 20, 2012 21:32:18 | I tried FF XI for a few months. Gave up on it when people told me that they spent most of their time crafting and the only actually adventured with their characters on the weekends... I work a full time job and pay a small monthly fee so that I can be a fantasy hero in my down time. I DO NOT work a full time job and pay a small monthly fee so that I can be a person in a fantasy world with a full time job who gets to be a hero on his days off. So, yeah, gave up on it in short order. Tried WoW briefly, wasn't impressed. Have been playing City of Heroes/Villians off and on since day 2 of the 3 day head start for people who pre-ordered CoH. I play the game casually, mostly solo, every now and again I game with some of my friends. I never feel that I "need" to log a crapton of hours doing ho-hum crap in order to be viable in combat. If you want to be in a supergroup, play happy homemaker in your SG HQ, pimp out your character with odd stuff, yeah, you can do that. But it's all extras. |
| #28pigknightMar 20, 2012 21:50:47 | Anyone intersted in playing Runes of Magic? I have played it before and thought it was pretty fun, but quit for a while and am now getting back into it. |
| #29zombie_babiesMar 21, 2012 8:38:37 | The last thing you got us to play was DDO. And I still haven't forgiven you for that. ![]() |
| #30EscefMar 21, 2012 10:07:30 | Oh, I almost forgot... I've also tried DDO and LotRO. Neither impressed me. |
| #31PeregrineVMar 21, 2012 10:22:20 | Ultima Online in the 90's. Neverwinter Nights custom server Neversummer early 2000's. Tried WoW but didn't have the time to spend the money on it. Play LOTRO since it's free, and sometimes buy a subscription to it. Play Wizard101 with the kids. |
| #32WebsterMar 22, 2012 20:52:27 | I love the Warcraft setting, but I haven't played World of Warcraft in ages since I couldn't afford the monthly fee anymore. I also play Guild Wars, but not much lately. I currently play DDO. The thing is, in both these "multiplayer" games, I play solo. Sure, I have my own guild but I don't have any members other than my other characters and my wife's characters. I solo mostly because I don't like other people telling me how I should play my character. It's MY character, not thiers. If they want to run a paladin a specific way, they're free to make one and do so. In WoW, there's a suit of armor that gives a chance to self heal the wearer. It's useable by two classes, Paladins and Warriors. Plenty of morons got it in their head that the armor should ONLY be for warriors, because Paladins can heal themselves. Yeah, well that would be nice if I didn't have to heal myself because I'm busy healing other players who like to rush ahead before I'm ready. None of these people want to hang back and protect my character from harm. So, the best solution is to have the self healing armor, so I can focus healing on others without getting killed myself. You'd think these children could wrap that simple concept around their little minds. Apparently not. Indeed, I decided to build my paladin around the concept of self healing. I got armor and other magic items that would auto heal my character in combat. I also created my own lifestealing sword, where health would transfer to my paladin. I also maxed out an aura that would damage someone when they damaged me. It became a vampire paladin. I could take out most critters and groups of critters myself. I'd often end up with more life after the fight than I had when I started. It was beautiful. My DDO character was a Warforged Fighter, but then I rolled up my new favorite, a Warforged Artificer. The Artificer's pet's stats are actually better than my Warforged Fighter! The Warforged Artificer is the best solo class I've every played. I can not only cast buffing spells, I have a pet to help attack, I can open locked doors and search/disarm traps. I'm not the best in anything, but I can do a little of everything. |
| #33bone_nagaMar 22, 2012 21:04:47 | Well said. RM, I would really like to have another female posters in this sausage fest. ![]() |

| #35ADHadhMar 23, 2012 9:12:05 | I play Spiral Knights, used to play Maple Story, Metin2 and Wakfu beta. Yeah, just the free stuff. Also, take your anti-4e sentiments to D&D Next parts, where I can 4venge properly. |

I just prefer 3.X. Heck, I've played every edition; claiming that 4E is so different that it isn't "canon" anymore is ridiculous. Third Edition was WAY different from 2E. |

| #58missbehaveMar 20, 2012 9:50:30 | Well just figured I would put out this topic. |

| #60zombie_babiesMar 20, 2012 13:48:22 | I also LOVE WoW. I love DnD, but WoW is the thing I prefere to get my dose of fantasy. A hunter, troll, was my favorite toon. Careful, champ. I'm pretty sure I know who she is and, if I'm right, her name is Sophie Marie. |
| #61zombie_babiesMar 20, 2012 14:00:58 | Nope. |

| #63Cpt_MichaMar 20, 2012 19:21:41 | Nope. |

| #65draco1119Mar 20, 2012 20:12:11 | Of course, there's also some advantage in not having warriors and wizards function in the same way. |
| #66EscherEnigmaMar 20, 2012 21:11:05 | Shadowbane - loved it too, even with the bugs. |
| #67EscefMar 20, 2012 21:32:18 | I tried FF XI for a few months. |
| #68pigknightMar 20, 2012 21:50:47 | Anyone intersted in playing Runes of Magic? I have played it before and thought it was pretty fun, but quit for a while and am now getting back into it. |
| #69zombie_babiesMar 21, 2012 8:38:37 | The last thing you got us to play was DDO. And I still haven't forgiven you for that. ![]() |
| #70EscefMar 21, 2012 10:07:30 | Oh, I almost forgot... I've also tried DDO and LotRO. Neither impressed me. |
| #71PeregrineVMar 21, 2012 10:22:20 | Ultima Online in the 90's. Neverwinter Nights custom server Neversummer early 2000's. Tried WoW but didn't have the time to spend the money on it. Play LOTRO since it's free, and sometimes buy a subscription to it. Play Wizard101 with the kids. |
| #72WebsterMar 22, 2012 20:52:27 | I love the Warcraft setting, but I haven't played World of Warcraft in ages since I couldn't afford the monthly fee anymore. |
| #73bone_nagaMar 22, 2012 21:04:47 | Well said. RM, I would really like to have another female posters in this sausage fest. ![]() |

| #75ADHadhMar 23, 2012 9:12:05 | I play Spiral Knights, used to play Maple Story, Metin2 and Wakfu beta. Yeah, just the free stuff. Also, take your anti-4e sentiments to D&D Next parts, where I can 4venge properly. |
| #76draco1119Mar 23, 2012 10:56:06 | Also, take your anti-4e sentiments to D&D Next parts, where I can 4venge properly. Meh. I have nothing against 4E, though I understand why there are people who say that it plays like an MMO. I'm not one of the rabid 3.X fans who feel that "it isn't D&D!!1!1" or even that it sucks. I just prefer 3.X. Heck, I've played every edition; claiming that 4E is so different that it isn't "canon" anymore is ridiculous. Third Edition was WAY different from 2E. |
