Feb 07, 2011 22:37:49 If you've only talked to Mormons that were on their mission, don't mistake that for how they are the rest of the time. It would be like thinking that a salesperson is always happy because they were so nice and cheerful while you were trying on a pair of expensive shoes.

I know two mormons (a husband and wife) who play D&D (1st edition by the way as well as their own version of D&D taken to a comedic extreme), and they are two of the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. I have never talked to them about their faith in depth, but I think their happiness comes from one of their main tenants, which is to just be nice to people and try to live a good life.

Feb 08, 2011 7:14:45 Heh, I also remembered one funny incident: there was this Catholic priest who got a bunch of youths with him and started visiting Jehovah witnesses* at homes (the priest was undercover IIRC) to talk about Christ. The Jehovah witnesses were usually outraged and failed to see the irony.

*Around here Mormons aren't particularly active, so the "missionaries who visit you at home" are most often Jehovah witnesses.

Feb 08, 2011 8:12:50 When I was stationed in Germany there was a Mormon missionary who'd play Magic at the FLGS. What was awesome was bumping into two of his buddies on the way to the FLGS one evening. These two young fellows step in front of me and one of them unloads his spiel in German... The amount of German I know could get lost under my pinky nail, but I was waiting for the kid to take a breath. When I told him I had absolutely no idea what he just said the both bust out laughing. They were pretty good natured about it. I also served alongside a Mormon when I deployed, he also seemed an ok guy.

The few Mormons I've met have been nice people, but I still look upon their religion (and all organized religions) with a wary eye.

Religious proselytizers of any stripe smile and act happy for the same reason that I smiled and acted happy when knocking on doors for the US Census Bureau... Human beings are conditioned to respond in kind to the actions of others - if someone smiles at you, your instinct is to smile back at them. It forms a bond between the two of you, and encourages your natural instinct to please them, to be agreeable. You present a pleasant face and make small conversation designed to give you an opening to hook them in further, and get them to invite you inside. Predators, salesmen and psychologists counselling abused children all use the same techniques. They teach these techniques or at least the theory behind them in any number of college degree tracks from marketing and communications to philosophy and theatre...
