Feb 10, 2009 14:40:53 recently in english class, i had to write an essay from the most important event that i remember from 1990. one little problem....i was born in 1991. I just BSd the whole essay, and yet managed to get a B. hmmm....

I guess it did start getting big then.

Especially when they found out they couldn't sell the "impeding new ice age" scare. Anybody remember that? Take the current rhetoric and replace all references with "warming" to "freezing".

I remember. Aren't they now saying that global warming is causing the cold weather? I can't remember because I haven't been keeping up with it.

I remember when the opening ozone layer was supposed to be letting all the natural heat escape. Turns out the silly thing opens and closes on its own without our help.

But this begs a good question. What was the most important thing I remember from the 90's? As I recall, it was a kind of bland decade from my perspective. Big things? Gulf War 1, the Lewinsky Scandal, um, yeah, but were they necessarily important? I suppose the war was because it kept a needed resource free. The scandal wasn't really important, even if it was an amazing parade of BS. Redefinign the word "is"? Come on, if you were president is that what you'd want to be known for? Personally important for me was almost running over Bill Clinton with my Yugo. I never saw a real, live President before, and to nearly have him all over my hood was noteworthy to say the least.

Feb 10, 2009 17:19:50 Even though I was far from impressed with it at the time, I'd have to say Smells Like Teen Spirit. I was too much of a metal elitist at the time to let my self to be swayed. However, the whole music industry was set for massive change after the damage that glam and excess had done. Do you think acts like Soundgarden and Snoopdog just happened? People were getting disillusioned and wanted something dark and inappropriate. The roots were rotting for years before that, but Nirvana (with a little help from Melvins) toppled that tree. And everybody listens to music. Music wasn't the only thing affected in that time period. It was needed, though my beloved metal was pushed into decline because of it. Truth be told, we might need some of that again.

Bingo. Every single trend from last decade stemmed from Cobain's inner darkness. Grunge is quite possibly the biggest social event of the 90's, up there with the Great Metal Diversification. Without Nirvana appearing, things would be very, very different.

Metal hasn't declined, it's just that the Big Four entered a massive downward spiral from which Metallica and Megadeth have barely recovered with their latest albums, while Anthrax and Slayer are still fighting to return. You could say that the best of metal went indie. There's tons of quality out there, it just doesn't hit #1 in the billboard 200 anymore.

Feb 10, 2009 17:31:24 You're right. Decline is too strong a word. Underground maybe. There was a time when Metallica was the most important thing in this world to me. My tastes have expanded since high school. But, Slayer is surely the one thing you'll have to pry from my cold, dead hands.

It's closer to The System Has Failed or The World Needs a Hero, good but not good enough to call it a return to the glory days. If you like Slayer, though, there's Evile. Their song Thrasher sounds like something Slayer might have cut from Raining Blood (not because it's bad but because it's very similar to the stuff in it), while their longer compositions, like We Who Are About to Die, have a really cool vibe of Metallica + Slayer, which is just awesome.

Feb 10, 2009 19:11:29 I only know their material after Divine Intervention from a few MP3s, a live vid I have and their show in Portland I went to a few years back. I know they're not the same, but I'll always hold them as (un)holy in my heart. :D
