Love 'em or hate 'em, the naked truth is that you remember 'em. My father had stomach issues, and Alka Seltzer was his best friend on some days. This association made him quite fond of "Speedy".

For me, the salesgirl on the Progressive Auto Insurance commercials reminds me of a friend from some years back, so I file her under my "Like" column. Vince from Sham-Wow? Can't stand him, but I have to admit he's memorable. Morris the Cat I liked. Of course, fuzzy little critters are generally going to rate high, but those stinkin' Coca Cola polar bears should be eating those penguins.

I'm not hugely fond of spokes-critters, but the Geico gecko so far has managed to remain entertaining...

Otto the OTT Otter is the mascot of both Bud Lite and the OTT. :D

I hate the Geico gecko, I hate the Progressive saleswoman, all of 'em.

I think that most of the Pitchmen/Mascots are stupid and annoying.

Except Otto. He's kewl.

I don't like the fact that he's named Otto. There's just too much OTT for one mascot to handle. He should have his own exciting, original name. And a sidekick named Otto.

Ancient ads with Ronald McDonald almost made me waste money on junk food today.
He's probably the most recognizable mascot worldwide.

I don't know why, but the Jolly Green Giant popped in my head the moment I read the title of this thread. Yeesh, I guess we'd all know who I'd be fighting on the rooftop of my ancient-Sumerian-demon-possessed-girlfriend's apartment (or was Assyrian, I can never remember)
Anyway, I think the most memorable of my youth is a toss up between the Taco Bell Chiuaua and the Budweiser Frogs (and then the Chamelions). In modern terms, I would have to say the Geico Cavemen hold the honor for most entertaining. Then again, there's something to be said about the Jacks Links commercials. I laugh my a$$ off every time I see a 'Messin with Sasquatch' commercial.

Sheesh, people.. Her character name is Flo. Flo Gressive.

As for mascots...

Captain Morgan. That was the first one to pop into my mind. He's the best mascot ever for two reasons. One, he's a pirate. Two, he's a pirate. While I know those are technically the same reason, I felt it was important enough to mention twice. Also rum.

Here's a (by no means comprehensive list) of characters used in advertising:

The Budweiser Frogs.

Just win and awesome. Hate beer but that's great advertising.

Most hated:

the new Geico commercials... so so bad

-any- Progressive Commercial. Utterly terrible. Advertising so bad that it caused me to drop them as my insurer. (well and vastly cheaper rates elsewhere)

I don't know, as far as worst go, Progressive is bad, but those god-awful E-surance commercials suck on a level few can ever attain.

The old "Don't squeeze the Charmin'" adds were pretty funny. The old Hardee's comercial "Where's the beef?" Little old ladies shouting "Where's the beef!?!" is totally entertaining.

I know I already posted this today, but damn, opportunity knocks...

IMAGE(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b381/1tonghost/SenseMotive.jpg)

I want to hate that guy, but Charisma, even his evil Charisma is interesting somehow. In another time I picture him, "Come one, come all, experience Dr. Vince's Miracle Cure-All patented elixr. Guaranteed to stop headaches, tooth aches, cancer, **** leakage, and skin failure!"
He talks very fast, seems morally questionable. Oh, and you gotta' love, "Made (Shamwow!) in Germany, you know the Germans always make good stuff..." Don't get me wrong, I dig Kraftwerk, Spaten, Porsche, Krupp, etc., but you know there's some Sobibor survivor going, "Damn it Vince, I made that at gunpoint back when it wasn't cool yet! Now look...";)

-"Where's the beef"...Wendy's IIRC, not Hardee's.
-Insurance folks, the black guy from "The Unit" ([All State?] I dig him, looks like he'd come and pull me out of the flaming wreckage himself). "Flo", though scatterbrained and frantic, I somehow want her and I'm concerned at that. The Geico Gecko, I just like his matter-of-fact being. Accent helps. Oh, Hell, remember the Cavemen and their short-lived sitcom?
-The Vlasic Pickles Stork, aka, Groucho Marx
-The Land-O-Lakes Indian Girl. That's sum smoov butta'. Beats Fabio anyway.
-The Michellin Tire Golem-thing. Wtf is it anyway?
-Spuds McKenzie and St. Pauli's Girl (durndel + beer = good times)
-The new and improved, Chester Cheetai (Cheetos), "Give daddy a kiss..."
-Count Chocula; cereal-based undead spokemen, can't beat it!
-Sony's "Sweet Tooth" for PS1 back in the day. Who thought a psychotic, pedophilic clown would make an excellent mascot? Sega has "Sonic", Nintendo had "Mario", Microsoft has "Mstr. Chief"...this makes no sense.

Re: Land O' Lakes butter gal ...

You could also cut off her knees and a spot on her chest, tape her knees to fill the hole and get some cheap porn. Well, porn for a 10 year old. ;)

I remember hearing that back in the day. But uh, yeah...10 year old porn, heh, good one I'll just be, uh, formatting my hard drive now for a completely unrelated reason...
Not once did I ever fear her scalping me for impure thoughts as a child.

Princess Tiny Feet on "Venture Bros." has gotta' be her clone btw.

E. Ravenwood: What do you mean? He's the Michellin Man. That's what...he...is...I guess...?

Definetly a construct, but male? No tread on his tire as it were...;)

ToastedAmphibian: Yah, Vince is creepy, but you just can't look away. Somethign very sinister yet alluring about him.

You hit the nail on the head. Like a car wreck, stop, pause, aghast, but stare. I don't know if alluring is the right word though. I've tried 'baitin' to the Shamwow commercials, and, well, I always feel unfulfilled somehow. Like, you just know he wouldn't call you back the next day...;)

Other mentionables:

-Frisch's f'ing Bigboy! I love that little lard ass. It's a Cincinnati thing, but I know they get them up around Cleveland and other parts as well.
-OSU's "Brutus"...an anthropomorphic Buckeye. Wtf? Et tu Brutae?
-Col. Sanders. Who else could go from a prestigious military career to landed slave owner and inspirational chicken restaraunt magnate?
-The Gordon's Fisherman & the Brawny Lumberjack; you know there's some lonely housewives that fantasize of these formidable blue collar he-men though I suspect the fisherman cheated on Mrs. Paul
-Peter Stormare (the Devil in "Constantine", Showalter in "Fargo" etc) as the hipster German VW adman, "Zeets time to un-pimp ze auto. German engineering in ze haus!"
-Grimace...Ronald McDonald's retarded friend. Again, wtf is he?
-"Morris" the MGM Lion...he always roars at the opening credits
-Peter Pan, peanut butter. Not sure I'm comfortable w/ a somewhat androgenous figurehead that visits children at night in the bedrooms selling this stuff.

Back in the 80's or early 90's there was a brand of vodka (maybe Smirnoff's?) whose print ads in magazines had a really hot blonde woman in stripperific half-plate with a bastard sword riding on a mothering polar bear... - you know I'm not the only one who made a character out of her, lol.
I still have the ad tucked away in one of my old notebooks upstairs on my shelf.

Anybody remember the Noid. I love that Family Guy episode when Mayor West beats his brains out.

And then there's the Coppertone Girl with her dog who likes to show off her tan lines off for her. Something I always thought that was funny was that everyone makes a huge deal out of being able to see her bare hiney, no one ever notices she's not wearing a top.

...not like I've put any kind of thought into this...just a...you know...casual observation...

...aw crap, I think those are feds at my door, gotta go!
